CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 115: WOOD STEEL AND RED DIRT

  • Next Chapter

The twilight air whistled through the rocky ravines of the Shattered Steppes as Caius brought his pace to a sudden, deliberate halt.

Behind him, ten shadowy figures dropped from the high red sandstone pillars like silent carrion birds, surrounding him in a tight, lethal circle. The Moon Palace Shadowblades did not speak. Their silver masks gleamed in the fading sun, and their poisoned daggers dripped with a silent promise of agony.

Caius didn't reach for the ivory hilts of the Sabre-Twin Fangs strapped to his back. Instead, he reached into his dimensional ring and pulled out a pair of plain, scuffed wooden short swords, the very same training blades Old Bones had forced him to wield during his first brutal months at House Vel'drin.

The lead Shadowblade narrowed his dark eyes, his voice raspy with venom. "You mock the Moon Palace, human? You stand at the precipice of execution, and you draw toy wood?"

Caius spun the wooden hilts lazily between his fingers, a cold, mocking smirk touching his lips.

"I don't want to spill dark elf blood," Caius said smoothly, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet canyon. "House Vel'drin gave me two good years, and I still hold some respect for your kind. But that doesn't mean I can't beat you all to a pulp."

The Shadowblades felt the sting of the insult instantly. With a unified, enraged hiss, all ten assassins lunged.

WHOOSH!

The battle erupted into a blinding storm of motion.

Caius’s Eye of the Loom flared into liquid obsidian, predicting every trajectory before a single foot touched the dirt. He didn't use lethal cuts, instead relying on pure, oppressive kinetic force.

When the first two assassins phased through the shadows to split his throat, Caius pivoted on his heel, channeling his liquid obsidian core into the wooden blades. The plain wood glowed with a dense, spatial-lightning coat that reinforced the grain beyond the hardness of dark steel. He cross-blocked the incoming daggers, sending a violent shockwave through the wood that rattled the assassins' teeth.

CRACK!

The lead assassin stumbled backward, his stance shattered. Caius didn't let up, using close-quarters footwork to slide inside the dark elf's guard. He drove the pommel of his left wooden sword upward, catching the assassin square in the solar plexus and launching him backward into a rock wall.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

Three more Shadowblades materialized from the surrounding mist, their blades tracing razor-thin arcs of void energy. Caius ducked beneath a decapitating slash, spinning low to sweep his right wooden blade against the ankles of the nearest attacker. The dense wood struck with the force of a falling anvil, fracturing bone with a sharp, resonant snap.

The remaining assassins converged from all sides, executing a synchronized death-spiral technique. Poisoned steel flashed in the twilight, aiming for his thighs, arms, and neck simultaneously. Caius moved like smoke, parrying three strikes with blistering speed, the wooden blades groaning under the immense stress but holding firm thanks to the Calamity Forge reinforcement. When a fourth dagger slipped past his guard and grazed his left shoulder, Caius twisted his body, using the momentum to plant his boot into the attacker's chest and fling him into his comrades.

Four assassins unleashed a synchronized Void Web, dark threads of shadow magic wrapping around his limbs to bind him in place. Caius simply smiled. Dark purple lightning erupted from his Crown Core, surging down the wooden short swords and detonating outward in a violent, non-lethal shockwave.

BZZZZT-BOOM!

The lightning shattered the shadow magic and sent all four attackers flying backward, their armor smoking, their limbs twitching uncontrollably from the electric paralysis.

Within three minutes, the canyon floor was littered with ten groaning, bruised, and thoroughly humiliated Moon Palace Shadowblades. Not a single drop of dark elf blood had been spilled, but not a single one of them remained standing.

Caius casually flipped the wooden swords in his hands, storing them back into his spatial ring. He walked over to the lead tracker, who was clutching his broken collarbone on the dirt.

"Tell the Dual Sovereigns," Caius said quietly, "that the Macrae line remembers its debts."

Without waiting for a response, Caius turned and sprinted the final fifty yards toward the massive, skull-carved stone archway that marked the border. He leaped across the line, his boots landing heavily on the deep red soil of the Orc Chieftain territories.

The Great Hunt was officially over.

A week later, deep within the subterranean territory of House Vel'drin...

The private tavern beneath the clan estate was quiet, filled only with the scent of bitter ale and pipe smoke. Old Bones sat alone in a dark corner booth, a cup of dark elf wine resting in his calloused hand.

Orven walked over, tossing a parchment intelligence report onto the wooden table.

"The Moon Palace is furious," Orven grunted, taking a seat opposite the old assassin. "Their elite pursuit squad returned from the surface two days ago. Broken ribs, shattered jaws, severe lightning burns, but not a single fatality. The report says the human boy beat ten Shadowblades unconscious using wooden training swords before crossing the border."

Old Bones paused, his cup halfway to his mouth.

He stared at the parchment for a long moment, then let out a low, raspy chuckle that quickly built into a booming, wholehearted laugh that echoed through the quiet tavern.

"The arrogant little brat," Old Bones wheezed, wiping a tear from his eye and taking a deep gulp of his wine. "Using my wooden swords... He made an exit worth remembering in style."

Old Bones raised his cup toward the cavern ceiling, smiling to himself in the dim light.

"Good hunting, Caius."
