CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows

CHAPTER 114: THE FAREWELL AND THE PATH OF ASHES

The heavy iron gates of House Vel'drin slammed shut behind Caius as he burst into the estate's subterranean courtyard. The static-charged mists were no longer peaceful; they swirled in violent, jagged currents as the alarm sirens of the clan chamber wailed across the cold cavern walls, announcing the arrival of an inescapable siege.

The Great Hunt had officially begun.

Patriarch Vane, Old Bones, Orven, and a fully restored Sereth were already standing near the heavy entrance to the deep ancestral vaults. Around them, two dozen elite Vel'drin shadow-guards stood with weapons drawn, forming an impenetrable defensive perimeter against the creeping darkness outside the courtyard ward.

"They didn't waste a single breath," Sereth said grimly, unsheathing a dark-steel rapier that hummed with quiet fury. "The vanguard legions of the Absolute Sun are already marching on the causeway, and the Moon Palace shadow-trackers have locked down every public transit portal in the under-realm."

"They sealed the West, East, and South routes," Caius said, stepping up to the group. His voice was entirely calm, his pale eyes glowing with liquid obsidian as he pulled out the obsidian token Vane had given him earlier. "The Sovereigns made it clear, my blood is supposed to stay in the Nyx'ari lands."

"They control the surface exits, but they do not control the deep veins beneath House Vel'drin," Patriarch Vane replied coldly. He turned toward the reinforced iron doors leading down into the subterranean catacombs. "Follow me. The spatial rift array is primed, but it will only stay open for thirty seconds once activated before the Moon Palace's scrying matrices pinpoint the mana spike."

The group descended rapidly through winding, damp stone steps, leaving the thunderous battle drums above behind. Deep within the lowest subterranean chamber, where the raw, unrefined spatial currents of the world thrummed like a beating heart, stood an ancient, ring-shaped stone archway covered in glowing purple runes.

If you spot this tale on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Old Bones stepped up to Caius, handing him a heavy, leather-bound satchel filled with high-grade mana crystals and survival rations.

"The rift targets an unmapped cavern system near the western surface borders," Old Bones said, a rare, solemn look settling across his scarred face. "It is a one-way trip, kid. Once you step through, the anchor will collapse to prevent them from tracking your spatial signature."

Caius looked at the four figures who had sheltered, trained, and protected him through the darkest two years of his life. He adjusted his satchel, then stepped back and offered a deep, formal bow to Patriarch Vane, Master Old Bones, Orven, and Sereth.

"Thank you for these two years," Caius said, his voice filled with genuine, quiet reverence. "House Vel'drin gave me shelter when I had nothing, and taught me how to survive as a predator. I will never forget what you have done for me."

He raised his head, his pale eyes glittering with an unyielding, murderous resolve.

"I will not return to the Nyx'ari lands," Caius declared softly. "My path lies ahead. I am heading west, toward the desolate lands of the Orcs, to hunt down and slaughter the green-skinned chieftain who beheaded my father Cullum Macrae. The blood debt begins today."

Sereth let out a harsh, proud laugh, while Orven gave a silent, respectful nod. Old Bones smirked, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

"If the fates allow," Caius added, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips, "we will see each other again under a different sky."

"May the shadows hide your path, Caius Macrae," Patriarch Vane said softly. He raised his hand, driving the obsidian token into the central pedestal with ruthless finality.

THOOM!

The ancient stone archway flared with blinding, dark-purple spatial light. A tearing sound echoed through the chamber as a violent, swirling vortex opened in the center of the ring, distortion waves washing over the cold basalt floor like a tidal wave of ether.

Suddenly, the reinforced ceiling above the vault shuddered. A shower of dust and stone fell as three silver-masked shadow-trackers dissolved through the ceiling shadows, their poisoned daggers flashing toward the rift in a desperate bid to intercept.

"Go!" Vane commanded, sweeping his arm to release a wall of crimson blood-flames that incinerated the leading assassin mid-air. "We will clear the tail!"

Caius took a single deep breath, channeling his spatial-lightning core to form a protective Obsidian Lattice around his body. With one last look at his guardians, he turned toward the roaring spatial vortex and stepped through, plunging headfirst onto the path of vengeance.
