CAIUS: Crown of Threads and Shadows
CHAPTER 111: THE CALCULOS OF BLOOD
The heavy oak doors of the preparing chamber creaked shut, cutting off the deafening roar of the sunken arena outside. Thousands of Nyx'ari spectators had already filled the basalt tiers, their chanted insults and eager jeers echoing through the stone floor beneath Caius’s boots.
Caius stood near the weapon rack, checking the leather straps of his dual scabbards across his back. The Sabre-Twin Fangs rested securely against his shoulder blades, their ivory hilts cold beneath his dark cloak.
Shadows lengthened near the entrance as Patriarch Vane materialized from the gloom, his long crimson cloak dragging soundlessly over the flagstones. Beside him, Orven hovered like a ghost, his hand resting on the pommel of his rapier.
"Leave us, Orven," Vane commanded softly.
Orven bowed silently and stepped out, sealing the heavy iron doors behind him.
Vane walked slowly toward Caius, stopping three paces away. His crimson eyes swept over the young human, taking in his heightened posture, his steady breathing, and the subtle, dark-purple static dancing across his gloved wrists.
"You look remarkably relaxed for a boy about to fight an elite executioner of the Moon Palace," Vane remarked, his voice smooth, devoid of warmth.
"Nervousness doesn't alter the blade's trajectory, Patriarch," Caius replied, his voice completely level. "Old Bones taught me that."
A faint, ghostly smile flickered on Vane's pale lips before vanishing. "Old Bones taught you how to kill. I am here to teach you why you must kill today, and precisely how much blood you are allowed to spill."
Vane raised a slender hand, sweeping a ring of red silencing runes across the stone walls to ensure no scrying eyes from the high gallery could peer into the room.
"You believe this Trial of Fate is merely about your pact," Vane said, turning his cold gaze directly to Caius's eyes. "A simple survival test to see if a human ward reaches his sixteenth year. It is not."

"The Dual Sovereigns," Caius said smoothly.
"Precisely," Vane said. "The Absolute Sun and Absolute Moon are locked in a silent war for supremacy over the subterranean council. House Vel'drin holds the balance of power. For two years, we have sheltered you within our grounds under the guise of an experimental ward pact, allowing you to train in secret. But today, the Moon Palace intends to use their Shadowblade, Zul'kor of the Shadowed Veil, to execute you in the ring. If you die, House Vel'drin loses its political leverage, and the Moon Palace will brand our clan as harborers of weak, failed anomalies."
Caius adjusted the left strap of his twin swords. "And if I win?"
"If you win smoothly, the Absolute Sun will demand your immediate handover to begin the Great Hunt, claiming your spatial affinity is a threat to the realm," Vane explained, stepping closer. "If you lose, you die. But if you crush Zul'kor too brutally using your hidden thunder arts, both Sovereigns will unite to brand House Vel'drin as traitors who cultivated a forbidden realm-transcender."
Caius tilted his head slightly, his pale eyes narrowing. "You're telling me to win, but without showing every card in my hand."
"I am telling you to make it look like a desperate, narrow victory of raw spatial martial arts," Vane corrected, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous murmur. "Let them see spatial threads. Let them see elite sword technique. But keep the Sabre-Tiger's true thunder-core hidden until the final, fatal stroke. Make them believe you barely survived through cunning and luck, not overwhelming authority."
Vane reached into his robes and pulled out a small, obsidian token carved with the crest of House Vel'drin. He held it out to Caius.
"If Zul'kor falls, the Great Hunt will be officially declared within three months instead of immediately. That token grants you access to the clan’s private spatial rift beneath the estate, your only escape route when the entire subterranean world comes hunting for your head."
Caius took the token, slipping it into his inner tunic. "And what does House Vel'drin get from keeping me alive?"
Vane looked down at the young human, a genuine, terrifying glint of pride flashing in his crimson eyes.
"We get to show the Dual Sovereigns that House Vel'drin does not raise prey," Vane said coldly. "We raise apex predators."
The heavy iron doors banged open, and an arena herald called out into the corridor, his voice booming across the stone halls:
"The Trial of Fate! Caius, son of Cullum Macrae and Ward of House Vel'drin, versus Zul'kor of the Shadowed Veil, enter the sunken ring!"
Vane stepped back, waving his hand to dissolve the silencing ward. "Go, Caius. Turn their execution into your stepping stone."
Caius didn't say another word. He turned toward the glaring light of the arena archway, his hand brushing the hilt of the Sabre-Twin Fangs as his Eye of the Loom flared into liquid obsidian.
