Bride of Retribution: Aloof Billionaire's Dominant Game
Chapter 981 - 511: Can That Reserve Feed You?
The telephone was ringing incessantly at this moment, a real buzzkill. He extended his long arm to grab the phone from the bedside cabinet. Seeing the incoming call display, his brows furrowed slowly. He got out of bed to answer the call outside.
"Joshua, Nora told Avery that the person she married is not you, but Lucas Yates." Alexander King stood in Nora Thompson’s garden, his expression ashen. He was awaiting a verdict, hoping to leverage the relationship built over ten years to plead with Joshua Hughes to go easy on him. In truth, Nora meant no harm; she is a friend of Avery Jane and naturally wouldn’t want to see her deceived. Besides, what she said was the truth.
Joshua Hughes’s strong body trembled slightly. "What else did she say?" He knew Avery Jane would find out the truth someday, he just didn’t expect it to be so soon, and amidst a cascade of events.
:"Nothing more; Nora said she wants all matters to wait until Avery remembers and judges from her own perspective. She said nothing to influence her judgment." Alexander King was annoyed by that little bookworm, who just now was still adamantly arguing with him. In the end, he shouted that matters of the heart cannot be judged rationally, leaving her there in contemplation. He didn’t want to shout at her, but did she realize her words might be dragging him into a point of no return?
Joshua said no more before hanging up the phone and stood by the window, gazing at the night outside. No matter how beautiful the night view, it couldn’t suppress the sorrow and fear surging inside him. She knew long ago, before the wedding photo, yet she hadn’t said much? What was her little mind planning? What had she remembered, or had she remembered nothing at all? Just moments ago, he was satisfied beyond measure, thrilled to the point of dying, but now this call had doused him from head to toe in cold water—or rather ice—freezing him completely.
The soft footsteps were absorbed by the long-haired carpet, a gentle arm entwined his waist. Avery Jane’s legs were so sore she could barely walk, her entire body leaned against his back, her long eyelashes trembling slightly. She sighed softly, "Joshua Hughes, I’m hungry...." She woke up starving with her stomach growling repeatedly.
Joshua held her tightly; he couldn’t leave her now, couldn’t fathom what she was thinking. She should be angry, should be accusing, should be questioning, yet she was so obedient and gentle, even her words were sweet enough to drown him in sweetness. Has she already remembered everything, treating him so well, waiting for him to let down his guard before fiercely stabbing him in the heart? But Avery, whenever you want, my chest is always open for you to settle things with me. Otherwise, if you leave, what’s the difference between being alive and dead for me?
:"I want to learn a lot, but could you please let me eat first? I can treat you, too. I won yesterday and can be the god of wealth now. Let’s go to the most expensive roadside stall for a good meal." Avery had heard there were many delicious snacks in Las Vegas. She wanted to climb out of bed but her sore legs faltered, nearly collapsing to the ground. Joshua extended his long arm and held her.
:"We’re not going out today, I’ll order food upstairs, we’ll eat in the hotel. I’ll run a bath for you, hmm?" Joshua carried Avery into the bathroom, the enormous room steaming with heat. He had already run a large amount of hot water when she started turning over to wake up.
:"You soak first, I’ll bring some food in." She was exhausted to the max yesterday; now soaking in hot water without some food might easily cause her to faint.
A white table with gold lines was set over the water, nearly eighty centimeters wide, covered with various delicacies. Avery ate a piece of cheesecake first. She needed this high-calorie treat to recharge, swallowing it in a few bites, she sighed with relief.
Joshua Hughes was still in Las Vegas, while Julian Carter was helping him handle the company affairs.
Frazzled; now frazzled was the best word to describe his current plight.
Julian Carter’s office was separated from Joshua Hughes’s by only one wall, currently his boss was off traveling with his wife, leaving all the affairs of Hughes Clan and his own company to him. On his way out, he left Julian with a pat on the shoulder, saying, "Julian, I trust in your capability." Trust my foot! Try working twelve hours a day. Plus, he still needs to investigate that woman with the photos, wishing he could grow an extra pair of hands!
