Chapter 89: Ch 89: Bluey

Ethan looked so serious while declaring this that Noah felt like teasing him a little.

"Huh? But isn’t that what the general population says about strong espers and guides? That they are more like monsters? But we all know that there is no way to turn monsters into humans...right?"

Noah was in the middle of speaking when his senses started to tingle. He had a feeling that he suddenly knew why the professor looked so familiar.

But the labs surely wouldn’t try something this experimental, right? That bird used to be their prized possession. There should be no way...

"Noah, what happened? You suddenly look pale."

Ethan asked while reaching for his face, only for Noah to flinch and take a step back.

"Ah, I am fine. I just had a horrible thought. But please, don’t mind me. We should clear this place quickly and then get out of here."

Right, even if Noah knew that the scientists at those labs were out of their minds, surely they wouldn’t sacrifice their test subjects.

He had to be mistaken about it.

But Professor Erin looked exactly like that monster bird that used to follow him around. Noah could even recall the time he had spent with that bird so clearly.

The blue bird that hatched from the monster’s egg was special. All the scientists said that the bird was some kind of ’successful implant’ that was going to revolutionise technology and this world.

However, none of the experiments after the first one were ever successful, and none of the other eggs from the same batch hatched either.

With the funds for the experiment getting thinner and approval getting harder to obtain, the experiment was deemed a failure with a single success recorded. But that ’success’ was never given a name.

After all, the scientists did not want to get attached to it. So Noah decided to give the bird a name.

"Since you are blue, I will just call you Bluey. Do you like your name?"

The bird pecked Noah to show his dissatisfaction, but Bluey never ignored him either. Moreover, he always came when called, which showed that he was willing to listen to him...for now.

But it did not take long for Noah to become reliant on that small bird for comfort.

With the other kids gone and the strange visions of the future taking over his mind, he felt unstable. He was starting to feel like he was losing his mind.

As a result, Noah ended up spending most of his time lying on the bed, looking blankly into space when he was not busy with experiments.

But that all changed once Bluey entered the picture.

The small bird was relentless, and whenever Noah started to look like he was losing himself, he would start tapping his shoulder to bring him back.

It did end in some bruises, but Noah considered them love bites he could accept. That was how he ended up forming a bond with Bluey, and they lived together until it was time for Noah to leave for the academy.

As for Bluey...it was an unfortunate truth that he was not going to survive long.

Monsters of Bluey’s species had shorter lifespans compared to humans, and Bluey was also nearing the end of his lifespan.

When Noah had left, the scientists had said that Bluey had less than six months left to live, which made Noah want to sneak him out.

However, he had been caught in the end, and Bluey had been taken away.

So he had accepted that he would never be able to see him again.

But if Bluey had somehow been experimented on and had become a human...then it was possible...

Slap

Noah smacked the side of his face to remind himself to wake up from this dream. He had no evidence to support any of his claims. Heck, he did not even know if Professor Erin was Bluey or not...

He was too afraid to know the truth.

’I never saw Bluey in any of the futures, which means he is not supposed to live for much longer. But...what if...I hide him somewhere far away...in a place where he cannot interfere with the future...would he get to live then...?’

It was a question Noah had only ever asked for himself. He wanted to distance himself from the future once he was done setting it up for the good ending...but maybe he could take Bluey along as well.

There was no need to sacrifice two good lives after all...

"Noah, watch out-!"

Ethan’s sudden shout made Noah blink, and he watched as a monster loomed over him, ready to cleave him in half.

But it was quickly burned away by Ethan’s flames. The esper looked pissed, but he controlled his features and rushed toward Noah’s side to check up on him.

"Are you alright? Did you get hurt? Let me see your face. Tilt it for me so that I can make sure you are not burned."

The concern in Ethan’s voice was real, and his hands were trembling a little even after saving Noah.

It was clear that he had never seen someone have such a close brush with death. At least, not someone he knew personally.

He was another person Noah was quickly becoming concerned about because he was far too soft for an esper.

Noah grabbed Ethan’s trembling hand on his shoulder and clutched it tightly.

"Ethan, you need to calm down! Nothing happened here. This is an experimental field created by abilities, so there is no real danger here. Whatever we are seeing is because of the experimental field around us. So calm down."

Noah reminded Ethan, who nodded and let out a sigh.

"I know this in my mind. But knowing this and actually following through is not the same..."

Ethan pointed out as he took a deep breath before he slowly started to calm down. This was good. Ethan was almost there. And Noah finally let go of his hand once he was done guiding him.

But the slight warmth in his palms did not fade away.
