Chapter 347: The Load That Matters

Another pulse washed grit from beneath the path.

Ren watched the water enter under the yellow mat and pass beneath the strip of shelf joining it to the green bed. When the swell retreated, a thin brown stream drained toward the breach. The paving above had barely moved.

"Keep off the connecting path," he said. "Stay on the ground we checked."

Sol stepped back beside the frame’s rests. Corin and Dray left the rails seated and moved clear. Ilse stayed outside the yellow mat’s edge, while Tamsin took the sound rock at the far end of the damaged stretch.

The green bed rested partly on that edge. Losing the fill beneath it would take away a lifting point and the first stretch of their carrying route.

Ren knelt beside the opening.

"Vesper. Call the pulses. Ilse, watch the mat."

"Coming now," Vesper said from her position overlooking the breach.

He put his palm against the sound stone beside the path and drew on Earth. Beneath the washed-out fill, rock rose into the hollow. He spread the support along the underside of the paving until it met the settled edge, then stopped before it could lift either the path or the bed.

The pulse struck the new stone. Water curled around its end and carried more grit out beyond it.

Ren kept the support in place and reached into the flow with Water Law. He turned the next pulse along the scoured ledge where the missing bed had stood. It ran over bare rock toward the breach, clear of the remaining mats.

With the water diverted, he raised a stone sill beside the path. It angled toward the empty ledge, leaving the flow a clear outlet. He brought it up a little at a time, watching where the water went as he eased his hold on it.

"Nothing washing out this end," Tamsin called.

"The mat’s still," Ilse said.

Ren released the Water working. The next pulse struck the sill and followed its angle onto the ledge. He watched another, then let go of Earth as well.

The support stayed beneath the paving. Water drained past it without bringing out fresh grit.

In the first room, he had divided his attention between a cracked pier, a leaking channel and a clogged drain. Here, Tamsin was already checking the far end while Ilse watched the bed. He could test the repaired edge without leaving either unwatched.

He walked it first, then stood beside the frame while Sol and the pair checked their carrying line.

The yellow mat’s landward edge rested on the same support as the path. Its outer half still hung above the scoured ground.

"Keep that one out of the lift," Ilse said.

Tamsin left the yellow flag where it was.

Ren glanced toward the surviving wall. While he had been turning the flow, he’d noticed the pulses reaching its different sections with different force, the vent notes following them along the stone. He marked the section nearest the sill on his sketch, then put it away.

Oda opened the coastal chart on a clear part of the path.

"The receiving shelf is here, past the headland. The gate held. They’ve cleared beds and have their unloading crew ready."

She traced the short coastal run from the nursery channel to the sheltered entrance.

"I’ll lead the first trip and bring Wake back. After that, the growers raise a white cloth when the unloading place is clear. Wake can see it on the approach."

"And if it isn’t up?" Ren asked.

"Wait outside, in this water." She marked a sheltered reach near the entrance. "I’ll show it that too."

Ren checked the route with her, then explained the signal and waiting place to Wake alongside the loading reach. Oda’s boat would lead it there before it made a trip alone.

Tamsin sent one of the three workers still with her up to the platform bell. The woman could see the breach and the lower beds from there. Vesper moved to the loading side once she was in position.

Corin and Dray brought down a sound slatted bed frame from the cooperative’s equipment. Ren held it in the cargo space prepared beside Keep’s cradle while Vesper secured it to the harness. She checked the four lashings and the clearance around Keep, then had Ren press each corner in turn.

Wake held alongside throughout. The frame sat level and stayed clear of the cradle.

Tamsin laid wetted covering ready on the bank.

"Over the growth once it’s aboard," she told Eira. "We’ll wet it again between runs."

Eira went up to the pump house and returned with the two resting workers. She let the one with the swollen knee set the pace down the repaired stair, then helped both into Oda’s boat with their packs. They would go to the receiving shelf on the first trip.

At the first bed, the lifting frame still rested where Ren had lowered it. Its tines were only partway beneath the mat.

Sol checked Tamsin’s marks and took his place at the end.

"Finish the insertion. Keep it level."

Corin and Dray pushed while Ren held the long side. Ilse watched the root mat from the edge, stopping them once to free a loose runner caught beside a tine. When the supports reached their marks, she checked along the bed again.

"Clear."

"Take the weight," Sol said. "Hold there. Now up a hand."

The mat rose together. A row of pale stems trembled along one side, but the roots stayed joined across the supports.

"Nothing pulling," Ilse said.

Sol brought them up to carrying height. Ren took most of the weight along the long side while Corin and Dray kept the frame aligned. They followed the checked route toward the reach, with Sol calling each turn before the leading end reached it.

The repaired path held. Tamsin watched its edge as the frame passed, then followed them to Wake.

At the bank, Vesper brought the carrying frame into line. Ren held the load steady while Corin and Dray guided the tines into the gaps between its slats. They lowered until the close-set slats bore the mat’s weight, then brought the tines a little farther down, clear of the roots.

Corin withdrew the first one. Dray watched beneath the edge as the next came free. The bed remained supported across its width while they drew out the rest.

Eira checked the exposed roots and the join along the mat. Nothing had torn during the transfer. She helped Tamsin draw the wet cloth over the growth, leaving it loose enough that the stems weren’t bent beneath it.

Tamsin paused with her wrapped hand resting lightly on the mat’s edge. She straightened a leaning stem before covering it, then stepped back onto the bank.

Wake rode lower under the load. Vesper checked the lashings once more; Keep remained upright and dry beside the frame.

— • —

Ren walked along the checked channel edge to watch the turn.

Oda’s boat went first, the two workers seated low in the hull. Wake followed at the surface with the loaded frame level on its back.

The fallen block lay where Ren had set it, clear of the bank. Wake eased past it, turned and brought its tail through without touching the opposite side. The frame cleared the stone throughout. Neither the load nor Keep’s cradle shifted.

Ren watched until Wake straightened into the wider channel. Ahead, Oda waited for it to draw closer before leading on toward the headland.

Sol came up beside him.

"Ilse’s picked the next bed."

Ren looked back toward the shelf. Corin and Dray were carrying the empty lifting frame to the next set of marks. He joined them while Vesper recorded the departure.

By the time the boat returned, they had the second bed lifted and resting on sound supports beside the loading path.

Wake followed Oda around the headland with its carrying frame empty and the covering folded aboard. It came alongside while Oda tied up.

"The first bed’s down and checked," she told Tamsin. "Your two are with their growers. They’ve found them seats and tea."

Tamsin nodded and turned to help bring the second load down.

Oda stayed aboard while Ren asked about the receiving approach. The depth had held, the unloading gear fitted their frame, and Wake had used the waiting reach before the growers called it in.

"They put the cloth up again before we left," she said. "The berth’s ready."

Vesper checked that Wake understood the receiving signal before releasing the next load. This time it went without the boat, following the same channel and turning past the moved block. Oda remained at the nursery landing for the workers still on the shelf.

After the second run, the lifting crew had a rhythm. Ilse and Tamsin checked the next mat while Corin and Dray reset the frame. Ren helped bring each whole bed to the reach, and Eira inspected it before the covering went on. The receiving growers emptied the carrying frame and sent Wake back.

Each return brought the frame alongside the same stretch of bank. Vesper checked its seat and lashings while the cloth was wetted again. Sol waited for her signal before bringing the next bed down.

— • —

The lower ends of the shellback’s furrows disappeared beneath the water.

Ren noticed on his way back from the reach. Earlier, the tide had been exposing more mud between the pulses. Now water remained over the tracks after each swell drained away.

Vesper checked the tide table against the landing marks.

"We still have working time," she said. "We leave at the third mark."

Ren went back to the repaired path. The sill still directed water along the empty ledge, and Tamsin’s check found no fresh grit coming from beneath the paving. They kept to the sound beds, working toward the loading reach as each one came away.

Wake was alongside for another transfer when the worker at the platform rail called down.

"Shellback. In the gap."

She pointed through the breach without touching the bell.

A broad, domed shell rose between the broken pier ends. Water streamed from its ridges as the swell carried it inward. It settled briefly, then moved toward the torn roots below the empty bed.

"Hold the next lift," Vesper called. "Keep the route clear."

The frame was still on its rests. Corin and Dray stepped back beside Sol, leaving the carrying path open. Ren moved where he could see past them to the breach.

The shellback dragged itself onto the mud below the scoured ledge, with the rising water under its shell.
