Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign
Chapter 346: Below the Waterline
The nursery’s wall came into view as they rounded the headland.
It curved out from the cliff, sheltering stepped growing beds behind a thick arm of stone. The layers along its face followed different curves, each grown over the work beneath. Near the middle, the storm had torn an opening down below the waterline. Swell pushed through it and spread across the lower beds before draining back.
Above the beds, six people stood at a platform rail.
Oda turned toward the landing. The walking approach lay exposed beside the channel, wet rock shining where the water had recently covered it.

Before anyone unloaded, she took the boat along the channel toward the loading reach, behind the wall’s intact end. Wake followed at the surface with Keep upright in its cradle.
A fallen block narrowed the turn. Oda lowered a weighted line beside it, then sounded farther out.
"Depth holds," she said. "Let’s see the turn."
"Wake. Slowly. Keep the cradle dry."
Wake passed the boat and eased around the obstruction. Its tail came close to the opposite bank. Beyond the turn, it came about in wider water and returned, keeping its back above the surface.
Ren watched the clearance while Sol checked the frame’s width on his slate.
"Not with a bed aboard," Ren said.
"Can you move the block?" Oda asked.
They brought the boat alongside the exposed path. Ren stepped ashore and walked to the fallen stone. It lay caught on an outer lip, separated from the standing wall. Oda sounded the hollow beyond it while he checked where its weight rested.
Nothing above depended on it. There was room to set it farther out.
He laid his palm against the broken end. Layers curved around a hollow running through the stone, their inner surfaces ribbed and smooth. He asked the System privately what the material held.
[MATERIAL: CULTIVATED TIDESTONE.]
[LAW CONTENT: WATER — DEEP. AIR — PRESENT.]
He noted the hollow’s position, then turned his attention to the block’s footing.
With Earth, he raised support beneath it until its weight came off the lip. He shifted that support outward, carrying the block into the hollow Oda had sounded, then lowered it onto the bed. It settled clear of the channel edge without disturbing the bank.
Oda checked the depth again. Wake repeated the turn while Ren watched the space a loaded frame would occupy. This time there was room on both sides, including through the tail’s sweep.
He marked the new line for Vesper.

Oda led Wake to the refuge inlet before returning to the landing. The cliff sheltered its mouth from the channel’s pull. She sounded the entrance and the water inside; Wake entered, turned and held there with Keep still dry.
"That’s where you go if Vesper calls the retreat," Ren told it.
Back at the landing, they left the gear aboard and followed Oda up the exposed approach. The six workers met them where it joined the platform path.
Their foreman, Tamsin Hale, had salt dried into her sleeves and a cloth wrapped around one hand.
"Pump house first?" she asked when Oda explained.
She led them up the rising path to the stone building. Its door opened, and the space inside was clear. Sol checked the turn back toward the platform while Vesper marked the junction in her notebook.
On their return, Tamsin stopped above the lower stair.
"This is the part you need to look at."
The third tread from the bottom was split. Two below it leaned outward over a dark hollow.
"Water got underneath. We’ve kept off them since the last tide."
Ren knelt on the sound landing beside the stair and reached against the cliff. He drew stone outward and up beneath the damaged steps, supporting them at their settled height without forcing the cracked tread together. The hollow filled with new support.
He tested the wall side before putting his weight on it, then checked the outer edges.
"Use it now," he said. "Tell me if water starts running underneath again."
Tamsin came down after him. Above them, Corin and Dray went back for the frame.
— • —
The beds followed the wall’s curve. Pale growth stood in rows above dark root mats, with narrow working paths between them. Near the breach, one bed had been torn away, leaving a scoured ledge and root ends trailing in the water.
Tamsin carried a bundle of flags.
"Green means we’ve checked underneath and found sound lifting points." She planted one beside a mat. "Yellow waits until we can check it. Red stays here."
She marked a torn bed beside the opening red, then pointed out a yellow mat above the empty ledge.
"That one held when its neighbor went. We haven’t put anyone beneath it."
Ilse crouched at its exposed edge, staying on the path. She used a long rule to probe under the mat and drew it back wet.
"We’ll check from the other side," she said. "Leave the frame clear of this one."
Sol followed Tamsin along the route to the loading reach. It ran behind the intact end of the wall, with space to bring a frame alongside Wake. The loaded beds would travel away from the breach throughout.
"Start with the nearest sound bed above the one we lost," Tamsin said. "Then work along toward the reach."
Ilse went back to inspect it with her. Ren walked the carrying route once before helping Corin and Dray bring the frame down the repaired stair.

Below the empty bed, two broad furrows crossed the exposed mud. A smear ran between them, leading from the breach to the torn roots and back.
"Shellback," Tamsin said when Ren asked. "It’s been in twice since the storm. Comes for what’s loose."
"How does it move?"
"Slow on mud. Quicker with water under it. It turns out there, where it has room." She pointed through the breach. "If it comes back while you’re carrying, give it space."
Ren followed the tracks to the water. The sheltered loading reach lay beyond the end of their trail.
"Vesper. Keep that opening in sight while we’re moving the frames."
She shifted to a place where she could see the breach and the carrying path.
The wall sounded behind him: a low note, then a pause and a drawing breath. With the next swell, fine droplets lifted from a row of vents along the intact section. As the water retreated, air hissed inward again.
"The old wall’s breath," Tamsin said. "At high water, the spray reaches the upper beds."
One broken chamber gave a rough, uneven whistle beneath the deeper note.
"That side used to sound the same," she added.
The tide was still falling. These shorter pulses followed the swell against the outer face. Ren could see the vent mouths narrowing and turning within the grown stone, like the hollow in the block he had moved. He marked the intact section on his sketch and went back to the frame.

Eira checked the workers on the platform path while Tamsin showed Ilse the lifting points. When the foreman came back, Eira sat her down and unwrapped her hand.
The cut was shallow. Eira washed it, applied a clean dressing and watched Tamsin open and close her fingers.
"Keep that dry if you can. I’ll check it before we leave."
Two of the others would stay off the beds: one was favoring a swollen knee, and another kept stopping to cough. Eira checked that they could manage the uphill path, then asked Tamsin to send them to the pump house.
Before they went, she took the oiled-paper bundle from her pack.
Tamsin untied it. She lifted the first wrapped portion, looked at Eira, then passed it to the worker beside her. The six portions went around until only hers remained.
The two bound for the pump house took theirs with them, along with the spare flags. Tamsin ate standing on the path while Eira packed her kit.

Oda caught Ren at the loading reach, where Wake waited alongside with Keep above the water.
"The salvage clause," she said. "Tamsin’s checked what we can release."
The foreman pointed to the fallen sections in the channel, including the block he had shifted, then to two broken pier ends near the breach.
"Those, once the recovery’s finished and we’ve checked nothing still needs them. The block you moved is clear of the bank now; leave it there until then. Anything attached to the standing wall stays."
"And the frames?" Ren asked.
"Only the damaged ones we set aside. We’ll need the sound ones to move the beds again."
Oda marked the eligible pieces on the contract sketch. Ren checked them against the route. He could reach them after the workers and recovered stock were safe; none needed to come out during the loading.
"Agreed."
He put the sketch away and helped settle the lifting frame on the path.
Vesper paused beside him as a report reached her through Keep’s network.
"Eira’s spore, on the platform path. That position is from before we came down the stair."
Sol looked toward Eira, now walking back from the same path with her kit.
"I can see her," he said.
Vesper noted the report’s age and returned her attention to the breach.
— • —
Sol, Ilse and Tamsin chose the first bed together. It was the green one above the scoured ledge, with a clear route behind it toward the loading reach.
Ilse checked beneath each lifting point from the edge. Mud reached her elbow when she withdrew her arm, but the supports had held under the probe and the root mat remained joined across them. Tamsin marked the places for the frame’s tines.
The yellow mat beside it was another matter.
"The seaward half is undercut," Ilse said. "I can pass the rule beneath it without finding support. Nothing goes under there."
They left its flag in place and kept the equipment on the checked side.
Corin and Dray lined up the tines. Ren took the frame’s long side and held it level while Sol watched the marks Tamsin had made. There was ample strength to lift the bed; they needed the support spread beneath it first.
"Slide it in," Sol said. "No lift yet."
The tines entered beneath the joined mat. Pale stems trembled along its edge, but the bed stayed seated.
Beside it, the yellow mat slid toward the breach.
Roots rasped over stone. It moved a hand’s width and stopped, exposing a wet strip beneath its landward edge.
"Hold. Nobody lifts," Ren said.
He kept the frame level as Corin and Dray stopped pushing. Sol stepped back from the yellow flag. Through the opening, Ren could see water passing beneath the roots and disappearing under the connecting shelf path.
"Stay on this side," he told them.
He lowered the frame onto its sound rests, then knelt at the newly exposed edge. The next pulse through the breach carried a thin stream of grit from beneath the path.
