Chapter 378: Chapter 378: The Bath Center Upgrades Again
But she remembered Rose Rhodes ramming her car into Cheryl Rivers that day, and how she hadn’t stopped her in time.
After that, Rose had taken Cheryl Rivers back to the Rivers Family, and Lily didn’t think she had seen her since.
’Given the Mysterious Clan’s usual MO, I thought Rose Rhodes had already been... dealt with. But from what Leo Colby is saying, she’s still alive.’
"What happened?" Lily Hart asked curiously.
She’d noticed the atmosphere between Leo Colby and Rose Rhodes was strange before. ’There’s definitely a story between those two.’
"She didn’t want to stay with the Rivers Family, so she faked her death to escape," Leo Colby said in a low voice.
Lily Hart prompted, "And then?"
"She said she wants to come join me. Boss Hart, she used to be with the Mysterious Clan. Do you mind?" Leo Colby asked.
Out of her sight, his hands slowly clenched into fists. He didn’t know which answer he was hoping for.
"Of course I mind a little. She is from the Mysterious Clan, after all. What if she has bad intentions?" Lily Hart said honestly.
Then she asked, "So you agreed?" ’Why else would he ask so cautiously?’
"Of course not." After saying it, Leo Colby himself let out a sigh of relief.
He had indeed refused her. He recommended a base to her, run by a good friend of his who was a Base Commander.
And he sided with Elder Shaw.
He told Rose Rhodes to go there as an ordinary person and lay low for a while, to let time cool things down.
Lily Hart also breathed a sigh of relief. ’If Leo Colby had actually agreed...’
’I wouldn’t have known what to do. Should I have refused firmly or tactfully?’
’It felt like either option would have damaged our relationship. Thank goodness he has good judgment.’
"That’s good!" Lily Hart said with a smile, pulling out some treats from a bag for him.
As a reward for reporting the matter so honestly and handling it so well, she even gave him one from her own share.
"Here, for you. Something tasty." Lily Hart pushed the five items toward him.
"Thank you, Boss Hart." Leo Colby took the cakes out one by one and arranged them neatly on the table.
Lily Hart finally asked the question she’d been curious about for a long time. "You and Rose Rhodes?"
Leo Colby’s smile froze. After a long moment, he answered honestly, "She and I used to be on the same squad. There were three other people on the team."
"We went on missions together, killed zombies, killed mutated plants and animals... you could say we went through life and death together. We even fought against the Mysterious Clan together... But I never imagined she was a member of the Mysterious Clan herself."
Lily Hart had a sudden realization. ’So he was deceived by Rose Rhodes? That’s why the atmosphere between them was so strange.’
They once had the kind of relationship where they could trust each other with their lives, but their differing loyalties forced them apart.
So much had happened between them, but Leo Colby summed it up in just a few simple sentences.
"Oh... it’s okay. My condolences," Lily Hart comforted him awkwardly. "You’ve already done more than enough for her."
Leo Colby nodded lightly. ’Yes... more than enough.’
It took him a moment to realize Lily Hart had said, "My condolences." Leo Colby couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
Lily Hart gave him a suspicious look. ’What’s so funny all of a sudden?’
But her wide-eyed look, combined with the two words she’d just said, only made it funnier in Leo Colby’s eyes.
’How weird.’
"I’m going upstairs to check on Old Man Keaton." Lily Hart couldn’t make heads or tails of it, so she decided to just drop it.
Leo Colby nodded repeatedly and waved at her, his mind flashing back to the deadpan expression she had while seriously offering her condolences.
He could tell she was trying her best to comfort him but was at a loss for words. After struggling for a while, she just blurted out "My condolences." The more Leo Colby thought about it, the funnier it seemed.
And a little heartwarming.
He watched her back disappear around the corner, then looked at the five desserts and pastries arranged neatly on the table. The frown on his brow slowly smoothed out.
Lily Hart easily found Simon Keane’s room and gave a couple of perfunctory knocks. "Anyone in there?"
From inside came the sound of Simon Keane muttering curses, followed by shuffling footsteps. Lily Hart waited patiently.
The next second, the door opened. There was the signature bedhead, the slovenly clothes, and the rather heavy dark circles under his eyes. Old Man Keaton opened the door, then immediately turned around and flopped onto his bed.
Standing at the doorway, Lily Hart could smell a faint stench wafting from the room. She instantly lost any desire to go inside.
’This old man is a real piece of work. He pollutes the environment no matter where he is!’
She had originally planned to give him some cake, but now, the thought vanished.
Old Man Keaton, completely unfazed, remained sprawled on his bed and just mumbled, "Sit wherever, I guess~"
Lily Hart stood at the door and scanned the room, looking for a spot that hadn’t been trashed. The most severe disaster zone was the bed.
The blanket was a mess, as if it had been carelessly thrown aside. The originally white sheets had turned yellow in the spot where he always lay, and as for the pillow... it was too gross to even look at.
There was also a single armchair and a coffee table in the room, some distance from the bed. Thankfully, Old Man Keaton had spared them; they still looked clean on the surface.
Lily Hart tiptoed, carrying two rather heavy bags, and carefully made her way to the armchair.
The floor was littered with empty soda cans, plastic bottles, and bread wrappers.
’I really thought this guy didn’t need to eat or drink, that he was trying to become an immortal or something. But looking at this, he does get hungry after all.’
After a painstaking journey, Lily Hart reached the armchair. She looked it over again. It seemed clean enough, but she didn’t let her guard down, sitting down cautiously.
She only sat on the edge of her seat, hugging the bags of bread in her arms.
The moment she sat down, she suddenly wondered, ’Why did I even come in? I think I just wanted to see if Old Man Keaton was dead or not.’
’Couldn’t I have seen that from the doorway?’
’Oh well, since I’m already here...’ Lily Hart started rummaging through her bags.
’Strawberry tart... nope, only one left. I’ll save it for Frost Shaw. Durian mille-crepe... nope, Seth loves this one.’
After rummaging for a bit, she only pulled out a box of two egg tarts.
She had brought ten boxes of these, so she didn’t feel bad about giving one to Simon Keane. She generously placed it on the coffee table.
As her hand brushed against the tabletop, she realized it was covered in a layer of dust that was also sticky and slightly yellow.
You couldn’t really tell without looking closely. The filth made Lily Hart jump to her feet.
Seeing Simon Keane still lying peacefully on the bed, a nameless anger flared up inside her.
’Forget it, forget it. Don’t be petty. I did say back then that as long as he didn’t leave, he could do whatever he wanted with this room.’
Lily Hart had a good attitude. She put down the egg tarts and left, just shutting the door a little harder than necessary!
After she left, Simon Keane rolled over and stared at the ceiling.
He couldn’t help but fall into deep thought. ’I’ve been such a slob, so filthy, so utterly disrespectful to her.’
’How can this woman still tolerate it?’
’As expected of someone destined for greatness. She doesn’t sweat the small stuff and can endure what ordinary people cannot.’
Simon Keane got up, pulled the curtain aside just a little, and watched Lily Hart’s back as she entered the bathhouse.
"The air isn’t the freshest in here, but it’s still better than the smell in Old Man Keaton’s room," Lily Hart murmured.
After entering the bathhouse, she looked around, remembering Owen Warren mentioning at dinner last night that it had been upgraded again.
’Did they add a third floor?’
She looked at the first floor first. ’Hmm, the area has expanded a lot.’
The first floor had always just had the most basic shower area and a rest area. It was very popular with survivors who just wanted to take a quick shower.
