Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 248: Shadow and Steel
On the high parapet, Lin Qing didn’t wait for the secondary gunfire to die down completely. With Su Yun’s limp, feverish body cradled securely in her arms, she turned to Han Zheng. "Help me get her down to the residential suite!"
Han Zheng immediately stepped in, his hands supporting Su Yun’s weight as they navigated the narrow, frost-slicked stairwell leading down into the subterranean complex.
Behind them, Lu Feng and Old Wang maintained their posts along the high wall, keeping their rifles trained on the retreating remnants of the Apex ground force down in the gorge.
They reached the quiet, concrete corridor of the residential quarter. Lin Qing swiped her keycard, opening the door to Su Yun’s room and easing the unconscious soldier onto the bed.
Su Yun’s skin was still dangerously hot, cold sweat dampening her dark hair while her breathing remained shallow and ragged.
Lin Qing turned to Han Zheng at the threshold, her expression grim but resolute. "Go back up to the ramparts, Han Zheng. The squad needs you on the firing line in case those ground buggies try one last push. I’ll take care of her here."
Han Zheng looked at Su Yun, then met Lin Qing’s eyes, giving her a single, firm nod. "Keep the door locked. Call me on the internal comms if her breathing changes."
Once Han Zheng’s footsteps faded down the hallway, Lin Qing closed the door and turned the manual deadbolt. Her mind was racing. When Su Yun had first been brought into the Research Center as a captive, Dr. Zhou had run a full battery of standard medical diagnostic scans over her entire body.
Those surface scans had returned completely clean. If Dr. Zhou’s high-grade scanners couldn’t pick up whatever was triggering this violent reaction, running another standard medical pass in the bay would yield nothing. She needed a method that didn’t rely on light or radio waves.
Lin Qing stepped out into the hallway, walked to the secondary residential suite and knocked on the children’s door.
The door slid open to reveal Han Ye standing quietly in the dim room, his hands tucked inside his jacket. His eyes held their usual cold, unreadable calm.
"I need your help," Lin Qing said softly, lowering herself to his eye level. "It’s Su Yun."
Han Ye didn’t ask a single question. He simply stepped out into the corridor and followed Lin Qing back into the primary residential suite into Su Yun’s room. Lin Qing locked the door behind them, pulling a chair beside the bed as Han Ye approached the sleeping girl.
"Her head," Lin Qing explained in a hushed tone. "You said earlier today that your shadows felt an anomaly near her neck. She just had a violent seizure on the wall, and she was whispering clinical codes. Can your dark energy locate what’s inside her without cutting her open?"
Han Ye looked down at Su Yun’s burning face. He nodded once, stepping up onto a small wooden footstool beside the bed so he could reach her head comfortably.
"I can search," Han Ye said quietly. "But it requires absolute precision. If my shadow energy slips inside her brain, she will not wake up."
"I trust you," Lin Qing said firmly, placing a steady hand on Su Yun’s shoulder to keep her still.
Han Ye closed his eyes, taking a long, measured breath. From the palms of his small hands, ink-black, impossibly thin tendrils of shadow energy began to weave into the air. Unlike the broad, destructive tendrils he used during open combat, these strands were as fine as spun silk—thinner than a human hair.
With surgical care, Han Ye guided the ultra-fine shadow tendrils toward Su Yun’s ears, slipping the dark threads gently past her outer ear canals and into her temporal bone structures.
The moment the dark energy made contact with her internal neural pathways, Han Ye’s body went completely rigid.
Minutes ticked by in agonizing silence. Inside the quiet room, the only sound was Su Yun’s faint breathing and the soft, rhythmic hum of the air vents overhead.
As the shadow threads pushed deeper into the dense bone at the base of Su Yun’s posterior skull, the physical toll on Han Ye became apparent. Threading dark energy through living human brain tissue without damaging delicate nerve clusters required a level of control far more exhausting than tearing apart an entire squad of enemy infantry.
Five minutes passed.
Ten minutes.
Beads of cold sweat began to pour down Han Ye’s forehead, dripping off his jawline onto his dark jacket. His small face turned deathly pale, his lips losing all color as his breathing became ragged and strained. Tremors ran through his small shoulders, yet his hands remained pinned in the air, motionless as granite.
Lin Qing watched him with her heart in her throat, her knuckles white where she gripped the bedframe, but she didn’t dare speak or disturb his absolute concentration.
At the fifteen-minute mark, a faint, metallic vibration echoed from the back of Su Yun’s neck. Su Yun let out a soft, unconscious groan as a wave of heat dissipated from her skin.
Finally, after twenty agonizing minutes, Han Ye snapped his hands back. The black shadow tendrils dissolved into thin air like wisps of smoke.
Han Ye stumbled backward off the wooden footstool, his knees giving out from sheer physical exhaustion. Lin Qing reacted instantly, catching him before he hit the concrete floor and lifting him gently into her arms.
Han Ye gasped for air, his chest heaving as sweat drenched his dark hair. He leaned against Lin Qing’s shoulder, his small voice raspy and faint.
"I... I found it," Han Ye whispered, his small fingers clutching at Lin Qing’s tactical vest. "At the base of her skull... fused directly into the bone. It’s a chip."
Lin Qing felt a cold chill run through her veins. "Can you destroy it?"
"No," Han Ye panted softly, shaking his head. "It is wrapped directly around her main nerve clusters. If I crush it with my shadows, it will sever her spinal column. But... I used my dark energy to scorch its outer receiver coils. I damaged its signal array as much as I could without killing her."
He looked up at Lin Qing with his dark, tired eyes. "It won’t be easy to take it out. You will need a real surgeon and specialized tools to cut it from the bone. But for now... the signal is weak."
Relief flooded through Lin Qing like a warm wave.
Knowing that the terrifying anomaly inside Su Yun’s head was finally identified and temporarily suppressed was a victory beyond words.
Spurred by pure emotion, Lin Qing pulled the small boy into a tight, warm hug, holding him close against her chest. "Thank you, Han Ye. Thank you so much."
Feeling his frame stiffen in surprise, Lin Qing pulled back slightly and impulsively kissed him on his pale cheek.
Han Ye froze completely. His eyes went wide, a sudden, bright flush of red spreading across his pale cheeks. The regressor was thoroughly stunned, completely speechless as he stared at her, his small hand instinctively touching the spot on his cheek where her lips had rested. He quickly looked away, clearing his throat with a tiny, embarrassed cough.

In the Command Hub, the atmosphere remained extremely tense.
Sun Hao was still hunched over his communications array, monitoring the intercepted flight-deck frequency from the black bomber above.
Suddenly, the pilot’s voice burst through the speaker, sharp, ragged, and dripping with outright hostility.
"—Apex Central, this is Flight Lead!" the pilot shouted over the roar of his cockpit alarms. "Fuel state is now at critical reserve threshold! We are down to eighteen percent! If I loiter over this peak for another three minutes, we will not have enough fuel to clear the ridge line, let alone reach Sector 4! We are turning back NOW, whether you clear payload release or not!"
A long, heavy pause hummed over the encrypted channel before Commander Lu’s voice responded from Apex Central.
"...Flight Lead. Abort mission. Return to primary staging base immediately."
"Acknowledged! Flaps adjusting, vectoring south-southwest!" the pilot barked with immense relief.
On the main monitor, the red marker representing the bomber slowly executed a wide turn, its twin jet engines roaring as it climbed back into the high atmosphere and accelerated away from the mountain pass.
Down in the muddy gorge below, the remaining Apex ground infantry, seeing their air support vanish over the horizon and their armor reduced to burning wreckage, began a hasty, frantic retreat on foot, falling back into the lower river basin to escape the wall’s sniper fire.
Sun Hao let out a long, exhausted breath, slumping back into his chair. "The bomber is gone. The ground column is pulling out completely."
Lu Feng let out a low whistle, leaning his rifle against the console. "We survived an Apex vanguard and an airborne strike force in a single morning."
Silence settled over the Command Hub. On the surface, it looked like a total victory: the Research Center was intact, the kill-zone traps had worked, and the enemy was retreating.
But Han Zheng didn’t smile. He knew the truth. This was not the end.
Whether it was Su Yun, or Apex’s relentless hunger to capture power-holders like himself, Song Yan, and Xiao Li to harvest their core energy, the Apex would never stop. Today they sent a mechanized vanguard; tomorrow they would send an entire army. As long as Apex existed, the Research Center would always be a target, hunted down like prey in a cage.
The door to the rampart slid open, and Lin Qing walked inside. She met Han Zheng’s gaze, giving him a quiet, subtle nod that conveyed everything: Su Yun is safe for now, and we know what it is.
Han Zheng turned back to the mountain, his chest expanding with a deep, resolute breath. His knuckles cracked as he clenched his fists tightly.
"We can’t keep sitting in this bunker waiting for them to choose the time and place of our death," Han Zheng said with certainty. "Defending these walls is no longer enough. We need to end Apex... before they bring the war back to our doorstep."
