Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch
Chapter 247: The Breaking Point
The high steel parapets of the Research Center’s upper defense wall were slick with melting frost and black powder residue.
High above the valley floor, the cold mountain wind howled across the reinforced concrete ramparts, driving sheets of icy mist and freezing rain across the firing slits.
Overhead, the heavy, hollow drone of the black Apex tactical bomber continued its endless, frustrating circle through the gray cloud deck, its dark shadow looming over the peak like an executioner’s blade suspended in mid-air.
Down in the lower mountain pass, the wreckage of the Third Vanguard’s lead transports was still smoldering, filling the narrow canyon with thick, oily plumes of black diesel smoke.
But Apex had no intention of pulling back.
Realizing that the circling bomber was strictly forbidden from dropping its high-yield payload while the primary target remained near the bunker entrance, the Apex field captains launched a desperate, secondary ground push to force the issue on foot.
Dozens of fresh, light infantry troopers and three high-speed armored buggies came roaring up the muddy slope, scrambling over the rocky debris in a frantic attempt to breach the lower entrance and drag Su Yun out into the open.
"Reinforcements on the lower incline!" Lu Feng shouted over the roar of the wind, leaning his rifle against the concrete ledge and squeezing off three fast, precise rounds that dropped a charging Apex scout into the slush. "Keep them pinned in the rocks! Don’t let them establish a firing line near the lower blast gate!"
Beside him, Old Wang crouched near a mounted sniper position, his graying hair matted with sweat beneath his tactical helmet. He racked the bolt of his rifle with practiced efficiency, calling out precise ranges to the defense team lining the high wall.
"Three hundred meters and closing!" Old Wang bellowed into his comms headset, adjusting his optical lens. "Ah Hua, hit the secondary claymores on the eastern slope! Blow them off the ridge line!"
From the lower terrace platform, Ah Hua let out a fierce, ringing battle cry, slamming his fist onto the secondary detonator console with crushing force. "Eat this, you Apex bastards!"
A sequence of buried directional charges exploded along the rocky eastern slope in a blinding shower of orange fire, flying shrapnel, and pulverized rock.
The blast tore directly through the lead squad of Apex infantry, throwing two light armored buggies completely off the narrow trail and sending troopers tumbling headlong into the deep, jagged gorge below.
Standing near the center parapet, Han Zheng fired deliberate, measured bursts from his assault rifle into the disoriented survivors trying to regroup in the mud.
His chest rose and fell in steady, controlled rhythms, his eyes sharp and unreadable. Though he possessed devastating kinetic core abilities, Han Zheng deliberately kept his power dormant, holding back every drop of his energy reserves.
Down in the subterranean loading bay below, Song Yan was already anchoring his gravitational fields around the bunker’s core structural support pillars.
But Han Zheng knew that if the bomber pilot above lost his patience or received a sudden override command from Commander Lu, an air strike would level the entire mountain peak in an instant. Han Zheng needed his kinetic force fully rested and ready to form a massive defensive barrier to cushion the shockwave and hold the mountain together if those bombs fell.
"Keep your fire steady!" Han Zheng’s deep voice boomed along the firing line, cutting through the gunfire. "We hold this ridge on foot! Preserve your energy reserves!"
Near the far corner of the high sniper nest, Su Yun lay prone against her shooting mat, her rifle rested on a sandbag. Her scope was locked onto an Apex field captain trying to organize a secondary squad behind an overturned vehicle chassis.
THUM-CLACK!
Her rifle kicked hard against her shoulder, the high-density tungsten round punching cleanly through the officer’s chest plate and pinning him to the steel wreckage. But as she worked the heavy bolt action to chamber the next round, her eyes instinctively darted upward toward the gray cloud deck.
The circling black bomber was still there. Its twin jet turbines vibrated through the air, a constant, sickening reminder that an entire airborne payload was locked strictly because of her presence on this wall.
The psychological weight pressed down on her chest like a slab of solid lead, making every breath feel thin, cold, and suffocating.
’Why me?’ she thought, her gloved fingers tightening around the cold steel trigger guard until her knuckles turned white. ’What did they do to me in that facility? Why am I worth an entire military air strike?’
Below the ridge, the remaining Apex troopers realized their ground assault was collapsing under the wall’s superior firepower.
In a desperate bid to locate their primary target’s exact position and signal her coordinates back to the command center, the surviving field officers activated two high-power mobile bio-telemetry scanners mounted on their backpacks.
Long, crackling waves of high-frequency directional signal bursts swept up the mountain face, saturating the air around the ramparts with dense electromagnetic radiation.
The instant those directional telemetry signals washed over the upper parapet, the micro-transponder surgically embedded inside the bone structure of Su Yun’s posterior skull flared into a violent, overheating short-circuit.
A blinding, white-hot knife of pure agony ripped straight through her central nervous system.
Su Yun’s breath hitched into a sharp, agonized gasp. Her optic nerve exploded into a wave of violently flashing white static, her field of vision completely dissolving into nothingness.
The rifle slipped from her numbed fingers, clattering uselessly against the concrete ledge.
She clutched her head with both hands, her fingernails digging violently into her scalp at the base of her hairline as an unbearable, high-frequency screeching noise shattered her inner ears.
"Su Yun!" Old Wang turned his head just in time to see her body shuddering violently, her eyes rolling backward into her head as she collapsed off her shooting mat.
At that exact moment, the access door at the top of the rampart hissed open. Lin Qing stepped out onto the high platform, carrying two heavy wooden crates of high-caliber sniper ammunition to resupply the wall defense team.
The moment Lin Qing’s eyes swept across the rampart, she saw Su Yun falling backward off the ledge, her limbs rigid and twitching out of control as her rifle rolled across the frost-covered floor.
Dropping the ammunition crates onto the deck with a loud, echoing crash, Lin Qing moved with explosive, lightning speed. She lunged across the frost-slicked concrete, sliding on her knees and extending her arms just as Su Yun’s limp body keeled over sideways toward the stone edge.
Lin Qing caught Su Yun securely against her chest, her arms wrapping firmly around her trembling shoulders to keep her head from slamming against the hard concrete deck.
"Yun! Yun, look at me!" Lin Qing cried out, her steady, calm demeanor cracking into raw worry as she held the girl tightly in her arms.
Su Yun was convulsing violently, her back arching as intense electrical surges from the embedded transponder fired randomly through her brain stem. Her skin had turned burning hot to the touch, cold sweat drenching her collar while her teeth chattered uncontrollably against the freezing mountain wind.
"Lin Qing!" Old Wang scrambled over on his knees, his hands trembling as he helped stabilize Su Yun’s shaking legs. "What happened to her? She was fine two seconds ago! She was taking shots!"
"It’s not a gunshot wound!" Lin Qing yelled over the roaring wind, her eyes wide as she remembered young Han Ye’s cold, terrifying warning in the corridor earlier that morning. ’Her internal aura is fluctuating... She’s carrying an anomaly you haven’t accounted for.’
Down the firing line, Han Zheng dropped his empty magazine, racking a fresh one as he sprinted toward them. His frame cast a heavy shadow over the group as he knelt beside Lin Qing, his dark eyes scanning Su Yun’s condition.
"Is she hit by enemy sniper fire?"
"No bullet holes!" Lin Qing reported frantically, her hand resting against Su Yun’s burning forehead. "Her skin is scorching, Han Zheng! Her body is rejecting something buried inside her!"
As the battle below began to subside, the surviving Apex ground troops falling back under the heavy claymore bombardment and sniper fire, Su Yun’s violent convulsing slowly eased into a heavy, unnatural tremor.
Her jaw worked faintly, her lips pale and trembling as strange, disjointed fragments of digitized speech and clinical terminology spilled from her mouth in a faint, raspy whisper.
"...subject... zero-four... neural link... stable..." Su Yun rasped, her unseeing eyes staring blankly at the gray clouds above as if reading data off an invisible screen. "...do not... let them... open... the bone..."
Lin Qing’s blood ran completely cold. She leaned closer, holding Su Yun tightly against her as Han Zheng looked down at the unconscious girl with a grave, dark expression.
High above the mountain peak, the solitary black Apex bomber completed another slow, ominous circle through the cloud deck, its engines roaring in the cold air, while on the high parapet below, the squad stood frozen around Su Yun—realizing that the true enemy was already buried deep inside her head.
