Apocalypse: I Built a City of Sin
Apocalypse — Chapter 99: The Mutant Beauties on the Brink
Xiao Yi emerged from the castle with the catgirl Lan Siruo and Keke, feeling utterly refreshed.
Now he finally understood why so many cat owners loved burying their faces in their pets’ fur.
Catgirls truly were mesmerizing.
Xiao Yi felt himself becoming addicted to the experience.
“Foxgirl! Horned beauty! Snake girl! Centaur! Wait for me! Your big brother is coming to save you!”
Xiao Yi released an excited growl and climbed into the Slaughterer Armored Vehicle. Guided by Lan Siruo, he drove straight toward the mutants’ settlement.
Their settlement lay southwest of the City of Sin, roughly half a city away.
For an ordinary person, that distance would have been an uncrossable gulf.
For Xiao Yi and the Slaughterer Armored Vehicle, it was effortless.
He pushed the vehicle to full speed and smashed through everything in his path until they reached the settlement’s outskirts.
From a distance, the terrifying zombie horde appeared to have thinned somewhat.
Even so, thousands upon thousands of zombies still surrounded the residential complex.
“Rrgh... Hrk...”
“Hrk... Rrgh...”
Zombie growls sounded everywhere.
The commotion was as loud as a celebrity concert.
Xiao Yi vaguely remembered this place.
It had originally been a development zone some distance from the city center.
Farther out lay the suburbs.
The mutants’ shelter occupied a newly developed residential complex.
The area had once housed far fewer residents than the city center, which meant fewer people had transformed into zombies when the apocalypse began.
It truly had been an excellent location for a shelter.
According to Lan Siruo, the settlement had initially been very secure. At its peak, three to four hundred people had gathered there.
That was already a sizable survivor community.
If those people had lived together peacefully and worked as one to develop the settlement, it could have become a thriving human stronghold.
Once the supplies in the development zone ran out, they could have expanded into the suburbs, where the zombie population was certainly much lower.
Unfortunately, humanity’s worst instincts could never be eliminated.
Without morality and law to restrain them, expecting people to help one another and coexist peacefully was nothing but a fantasy.
Xiao Yi took a cigarette from his pocket and placed it between his lips. Keke immediately lit it for him.
He slammed his foot onto the accelerator.
The Slaughterer Armored Vehicle roared like a savage beast and charged straight into the horde.
At the same time, Qianqian and the others sat together on the roof of the abandoned factory, enduring thirst, hunger, and exhaustion with despairing faces.
“Lanlan still hasn’t returned...” Miaomiao wiped away her tears. “Something must have happened to her too.”
“What do we do now? The ground below is covered in zombies. Lanlan is the only one who can climb walls and leap between rooftops. None of us can bypass the horde.”
Nana gripped her bloodstained iron staff. Wounds covered her body, and she looked utterly drained.
“Why don’t we fight our way out? If even one of us escapes, it’ll be better than all of us dying here from thirst and starvation.”
“We can’t break through,” Qianqian said. “There are too many zombies below, and that pregnant monster is still out there.”
Fear entered the foxgirl’s eyes at the mention of the creature.
The pregnant monster had climbed the building the previous day and attempted to ambush them.
They had believed only the spider monster could scale walls.
To their horror, the pregnant monster could do it too.
Unlike ordinary zombies, it appeared to possess a degree of intelligence.
It knew how to conceal its abilities and wait for the right moment to strike.
That made it terrifying.
If the ever-vigilant Nana had not discovered it in time and blocked its attack, they might all have been killed.
The pregnant monster’s combat strength was overwhelming.
Even with all four women fighting together, they had not been its match.
During battle, it could also launch the infant monster from its belly. The smaller creature moved with astonishing speed and could bite before anyone reacted.
Anyone it bit immediately became weak and listless.
Fortunately, Miaomiao had unleashed her venom at the critical moment, striking the pregnant monster and forcing it to retreat.
But the four women were not much better off.
Nana, their strongest fighter, was covered in wounds.
Qianqian and Yuanyuan were also badly injured, exhausted, and barely able to stand.
Combined with the lack of food and water, none of them had much strength left.
If the pregnant monster recovered and launched another ambush, all four women might die there.
Qianqian looked toward the unfinished building nearby.
The thugs inside had also nearly exhausted their food and water.
Driven by desperation, they had already attempted three breakouts.
Every attempt had amounted to feeding more bodies to the zombies.
Half of them were dead.
They knew breaking out meant almost certain death, yet they were already organizing another attempt.
Qianqian understood what they were doing.
The more useless people who died, the longer their remaining food and water would last.
“What can we do?”
She looked at the densely packed zombies below. Despite all her cunning, she could not think of a single solution.
Just then, she saw a vehicle outside the development zone accelerating wildly toward their position.
“Look! What is that? Has someone come to save us?”
Nana also spotted the domineering, savage armored vehicle.
Before it, the zombie horde fell like grass beneath a scythe.
“Impossible. Who would come to save us? We don’t have any friends. Besides... we’re monsters.” Miaomiao lowered her head dejectedly. “That vehicle must be here for those people.”
She pointed toward the survivors in the unfinished building, who were preparing their fourth breakout.
“It doesn’t matter who the vehicle came for. It’ll never make it this far,” Yuanyuan said in despair. “Is the driver insane? There are so many zombies that their bodies alone could bury the vehicle. How can one armored vehicle defeat an entire horde?”
She had seen people attempt to break out in cars before.
The zombies had quickly swallowed them, vehicle and all.
As the four women spoke, the armored vehicle accelerated again.
This time, its destination was unmistakable.
It was heading directly toward them.
“Look! It really is coming this way! It’s headed straight for us!” Nana cried excitedly.
“Who could it be? Who would come to save us?” Hope began to appear in Miaomiao’s eyes.
“It must be Lanlan!” Qianqian declared. “She must have found help. Lanlan came back to save us!”
The people in the unfinished building also noticed the armored vehicle.
The instant they saw it, they erupted into cheers.
They abandoned their fourth breakout attempt, and everyone began waving and shouting toward the vehicle.
“Come save us! We’re over here!”
“Hahaha! Our rescuers are here!”
“An armored vehicle! It must be the military!”
“We’re saved! Hahaha! The military is here! We’re definitely saved!”
“That armored vehicle must be the advance unit. There will be tanks, artillery, and maybe even helicopters behind it! Hahahaha! Those goddamn zombies are finished now!”
“I told you the military was still out there. As long as we held on, someone would eventually take us to a safe settlement!”
