Apocalypse — Chapter 97: The Mutant Beauties’ Despair

  • Next Chapter

“Forget it. Stop making things difficult for these kids. They never chose to become like this. Besides, without them, we never could have secured such a good shelter.”

At last, someone in the crowd spoke up for the mutants.

It was Kangkang’s mother, a gentle and kind middle-aged woman.

“Shouldn’t these animals be finding food for us?” the tattooed man retorted. “From now on, you’ll go out and collect food for us every day. Otherwise, we’ll kill you animals and cook your meat!”

He drew a pistol from his waist, pointed it at Kangkang, and made a mocking shooting sound.

Even the normally good-tempered Kangkang could no longer endure such humiliation.

He shot to his feet, tiger claws emerging from his hands.

“Go ahead. Move one more time.”

A young man sitting behind Kangkang’s mother pressed a knife against her and grinned viciously.

“I hear you’re a devoted son. Today, I’d like to see just how devoted this tiger freak really is.”

“Grrr!”

Kangkang suppressed his fury and released a low growl.

A group of armed men immediately rose from the crowd.

Some even aimed crossbows at him.

“Kangkang! Calm down!” Nana hurriedly grabbed him. “Let’s go. We can find food for ourselves!”

Fighting those thugs under these circumstances would put the mutants at an enormous disadvantage.

Worse, Kangkang’s mother was in their hands.

Everyone knew Kangkang was deeply devoted to her.

Although his mother avoided him because she saw him as an inhuman monster, Kangkang still treated her with the same filial devotion as before.

In the end, Lan Siruo and the others could only swallow their anger and leave.

From that day on, they risked their lives every day to collect food for those ungrateful bastards.

It was humiliating, but the repeated expeditions also made the mutants increasingly powerful.

Finding food was not particularly difficult for them.

Yet once they submitted, the thugs began making one unreasonable demand after another.

The tattooed man even set his sights on the bewitching foxgirl Qianqian and the beautiful catgirl Lan Siruo.

“Starting today, you female freaks will take turns sleeping with me and my brothers!”

Led by the tattooed man, a group of armed men stormed into the abandoned factory where the mutants lived.

They pointed at Qianqian and Lan Siruo and laughed lewdly.

This time, neither woman would agree.

They would rather die than become toys for those human scum.

“Don’t even think about it!” Kangkang stepped forward. “No one will hurt my sisters. We can find food for you, but we will never accept any other demand!”

“Is that so?”

The tattooed man burst into laughter.

Twang!

A hidden thug fired a crossbow bolt into Kangkang’s neck.

His neck was his greatest weakness.

Kangkang had told only his mother.

For him, a bolt through the neck was fatal.

“Run! Find somewhere to hide!”

Kangkang roared. His muscles exploded outward, and he transformed into a gigantic white tiger before pouncing on the tattooed man.

Gunfire erupted.

Battle cries and screams mixed together as the abandoned factory filled with the stench of blood.

Kangkang was killed.

His neck was covered in wounds—bullet holes, stab wounds, slashes, and five crossbow bolts.

The thugs knew his weakness and focused every attack on it.

Three of them also died.

Under Kangkang’s cover, Lan Siruo and the others escaped to the roof of the abandoned factory and barricaded the door.

They were safe for the moment.

But every one of them collapsed into grief-stricken sobs.

Kangkang was dead.

The righteous, kindhearted Kangkang had been murdered by the very beasts he had helped and rescued.

He had even been betrayed by his own family.

The remaining mutants were trapped on the roof.

At any moment, the thugs might break through and turn them into playthings.

Grief and despair overwhelmed them all.

Only Pipi remained standing, fists clenched as he stared down at the thugs below.

Kangkang’s death struck him especially hard.

Kangkang had not merely saved Pipi’s life.

To the boy, he had been an older brother and a teacher.

“I’ll avenge him,” Pipi said through clenched teeth.

Lan Siruo heard poison and hatred in his voice.

She also heard the resolve of someone prepared to die alongside his enemies.

Qianqian noticed the change in him too.

Whenever Pipi had lost control in the past, Kangkang had always been there to calm him.

Now Kangkang was dead.

Qianqian tried to approach, but Pipi glared at her coldly.

“This is all your fault! You were too kind and rescued those ungrateful bastards!”

“You were too weak! You never dared resist! Every time they demanded more, you gave in!”

“Elders? Family? Do they see us as family? They see us as freaks worse than animals!”

“All they do is use us and bully us!”

“Compared with those ungrateful humans, which one of us is really the beast?”

No one could answer him.

Pipi was right. Their kindness and weakness had driven them into this desperate situation.

Lan Siruo saw his eyes grow redder as his muscles swelled.

Wolf fur spread rapidly across his body.

Pipi had surrendered to his rage.

He transformed into a gigantic wolf and leaped from the roof, racing fearlessly toward the shelter’s outer gate.

The thugs surrounding the abandoned factory did not know his weakness.

Nor could they match his speed.

Bullets and crossbow bolts wounded him, but they could not stop him from escaping.

“Pipi!”

Qianqian watched him vanish and began to cry again.

She knew what he intended to do.

Lan Siruo knew as well.

Pipi had not abandoned them.

He had gone to find a way to take revenge.

They were right.

Pipi returned the following night.

And he brought a zombie horde with him.

Until then, no one had known that Pipi’s howl could attract zombies from an enormous area.

During the day and night he had been gone, the boy had risked his life to gather the horde.

Pipi secretly opened the shelter’s gate.

An endless tide of zombies poured inside.
