Apocalypse: I Built a City of Sin
Apocalypse — Chapter 96: One Big Mutant Family
Still, with so many mutants together, they should not have been in much danger.
Xiao Yi could not resist interrupting. “There are that many of you? Then you must be extremely powerful. Ordinary zombies don’t attack you, and your combat abilities are so strong. You should be able to live comfortably even in the apocalypse.”
“That’s not true!” Lan Siruo hurriedly corrected him. “Mutants have major advantages over ordinary people, and common zombies don’t attack us. But whenever mutated zombies see us, they become fanatical and try to tear us apart. We aren’t any safer than ordinary humans.”
“I was once surrounded by mutated zombies with long claws and nearly died. They were the ones who rescued me.”
“They also taught me how to fight.”
“I was truly happy during the time I spent with them...”
“This is what happened...”
The catgirl began recounting her story.
After the foxgirl and the others rescued Lan Siruo, several mutants cared for her.
Mutants possessed astonishing recovery abilities, so Lan Siruo soon healed completely.
Once she recovered, Nana, the horned beauty, began teaching the innocent catgirl how to fight. She also took Lan Siruo outside the shelter to hunt zombies.
With her agility and razor-sharp claws, Lan Siruo quickly became one of the strongest fighters in the mutant team.
The mutants were all kind and took excellent care of her.
Qianqian, the foxgirl, was breathtakingly beautiful, clever, and cunning.
Whenever they left to search for food, Qianqian devised the plan. By following her strategies, the group avoided many dangers and found valuable supplies.
Nana was an honest, straightforward, and exceptionally tall beauty with a pair of ox horns.
She stood nearly six feet three inches tall, with extremely long legs and a physique that was both sexy and muscular.
Nana possessed tremendous strength and usually fought with a massive iron staff.
Miaomiao, the snake girl, was an eighteen- or nineteen-year-old adult woman with serpentine eyes and an extraordinarily supple waist. Despite being the youngest adult woman in the group, she already possessed a dangerously seductive figure.
Her special ability was spitting venom. Neither zombies nor humans could withstand it.
The ability also had serious limitations. She could use it only once per day, and its maximum range was five meters.
That made it rather impractical.
Because she could rarely help the others, Miaomiao had always felt inferior.
Yuanyuan, the centaur woman, possessed the upper body of a beautiful woman and long, glossy black hair.
From the waist down, however, she had the body of a white mare.
Yuanyuan’s greatest talent was running.
She was extraordinarily fast and possessed exceptional Stamina.
Big Brother Tiger, Kangkang, was the leader of the group.
He was immensely strong and a formidable fighter. He could face five or six low-level mutated zombies alone without being overwhelmed.
Kangkang was also upright and kind, always eager to help anyone in need.
Then there was Little Brother Wolf, Pipi, a mischievous boy of eleven or twelve with wolf ears and a wolf’s tail. Despite his young age, he already possessed considerable combat strength.
But Pipi was far too troublesome. The others never allowed him to accompany them on supply runs because he always caused problems.
For a while, the group lived together in harmony and happiness, like a family.
The good days did not last.
More and more people entered their settlement.
Every morning, everyone gathered to receive the settlement’s food and water.
The person responsible for distributing it was Old Dong, a highly respected former neighborhood committee director.
Old Dong first ladled a bowl of noodles and broth from the large pot and handed it to a middle-aged man.
No one objected. The man’s elderly father had volunteered to lure away the zombies during that day’s food run and died in the process.
The middle-aged man drank only a few mouthfuls of broth and saved the noodles for his thirteen-year-old son, who needed the food while he was growing.
Old Dong looked at them and shook his head bitterly before continuing the distribution.
One person after another received a portion.
The pot was nearly empty before Old Dong reluctantly ladled out a bowl of noodle broth for Lan Siruo and the other mutants.
They had done most of the work during the supply run and should have received the largest share.
Instead, all of them had to share a single bowl of broth containing only a few strands of noodles.
Even that meager serving provoked complaints from the crowd.
“Make them go find their own food!” A tattooed man abruptly stood and glared at Lan Siruo’s group. “They’re monsters! Zombies don’t even attack them. They shouldn’t be taking food from us. They should go out and find their own!”
“That’s right! There isn’t enough food as it is. Why should we share with these monsters?”
“Make them find their own food!”
Voices rose throughout the crowd.
In moments, most of the settlement had angrily endorsed the tattooed man’s proposal.
“Why?” Pipi leaped to his feet and glared at him. “We’re the ones who brought this food back!”
“Because you’re monsters! You aren’t human—you’re animals! Animals should be enslaved by humans!”
Even Pipi’s own uncle stood up and looked at him with disgust.
“You’re neither man nor dog, yet you think you deserve to stand as our equal?”
Pipi’s uncle walked over to Old Dong, snatched away the bowl being handed to Pipi, and gave it to his own son.
“Here, my precious boy. You’re still growing, so eat more.”
That boy was Pipi’s cousin and exactly the same age.
His cousin needed food to grow, but did Pipi not need it as well?
Worse, Pipi was the one who had rescued his uncle’s entire family in the first place.
“Give it back!”
Pipi could no longer endure the bullying. His eyes turned red, his fists clenched, and his muscles began swelling.
“Pipi! Calm down!”
Kangkang grabbed him and scolded, “He’s your elder!”
Under Kangkang’s stern gaze, Pipi deflated like a punctured ball. His body returned to that of an ordinary child, and he sat down with a wounded expression.
“Hand it over! You little fox demon don’t get to eat our food either!”
Qianqian’s aunt rushed forward, snatched the broth from the foxgirl’s hands, and gave it to her own son.
“We’ll be relying on these young men to search for food in the future. We can’t let them go hungry!”
“But we’re the ones who search for food!” Qianqian rose angrily. “Why aren’t we allowed to eat any of it?”
