Chapter 12: Chapter 12: This Round, the Advantage Must Be Mine

In Building 5, Wang Xiaohu and his group had just rushed over, already reaching the second floor.

The men were carrying flashlights.

When the apocalypse began, the voice-activated lights in the Building 5 stairwell happened to be broken and were under repair.

"Liu Junjie, are you sure the guy you mentioned lives here?"

"You son of a bitch, you better not be lying to me."

Having run the entire way while also fighting off zombies, the men were exhausted and panting for breath.

On top of that, several of their brothers had been bitten and killed by zombies en route. Their crew of over twenty had been whittled down to just over ten.

As a result, their leader, Wang Xiaohu, was simmering with a rage he couldn’t vent.

Startled by the roar, Liu Junjie, their guide, didn’t dare to talk back and quickly replied.

"No, no!"

"Absolutely not, Brother Hu."

"I used to be that bastard’s supervisor. I’ve been to his place a few times."

"There’s no way I got it wrong."

"He lives in this very building, in apartment 1501."

At that moment, Liu Junjie looked utterly wretched, a far cry from the arrogant man he’d been before the apocalypse.

Not only was his face bruised and swollen, but his body was also covered in bloody wounds from a severe beating.

Earlier that afternoon, he had reported the news to Brother Dao.

In a fury, Brother Dao had immediately ordered his men to beat Liu Junjie senseless.

Later, when Brother Dao learned that Mengde had completely emptied out the neighborhood supermarket—which he considered his private stash—he flew into such a rage he nearly had Liu Junjie killed.

If it weren’t for his wife showing up just in time to save him...

She had to perform a live porno with Brother Dao and his brother.

That managed to extinguish most of Brother Dao’s fury; otherwise, Liu Junjie would have been a dead man.

He was safe, but his wife... she had it much, much worse.

’Brother Dao and his brother... they’re not even human!’

’Like two bulls... My wife almost didn’t recover...’

"Fuck off!"

Ignoring Liu Junjie’s pleading, Brother Hu strode forward and kicked him.

"I was asking about that pair of sisters!"

"Who the fuck told you to talk about that kid?"

"Damn it, you got a death wish or something?"

As he spoke, Brother Hu landed several more vicious kicks.

’Kill Mengde and bring back the sisters!’

That was Brother Dao’s order, and it was their sole purpose for being here tonight.

"If I get up there and don’t find those sisters you were talking about, and I can’t blow off some steam... you can just wait for death!"

Brother Hu cursed bluntly, while his lackeys followed, their faces twisted in scorn.

’This loser thinks he can shit on our heads?’

’He’s nothing but a piece of trash who used his own wife to get ahead!’

After all, Brother Hu was a retired special forces soldier. He was a powerful fighter and had already killed several people even before the apocalypse.

As for his crew tonight, they were either former security guards from the residential complex or desperadoes who had followed him since before the world ended.

Tempered by the apocalypse, every one of them had a life or two on their hands by now.

Only this loser had climbed the ranks by selling out his wife.

And he still strutted around acting all high and mighty, borrowing their power.

They’d long since grown sick of the good-for-nothing.

Soon, led by Brother Hu, the imposing group arrived at the 10th-floor landing.

"Alright, boys! When we storm the room, I want that bastard Mengde chopped to pieces! I’m going to feed him to the dogs! As for that pair of sisters, bring them back to me!"

"After Brother Dao has his fun, every one of you will get a turn!"

"Just line up, one by one! Hahaha!"

Brother Hu’s arrogant voice echoed through the stairwell.

’All of us against one guy in a night raid? This’ll be a piece of cake.’

’The advantage is totally on our side this round!’

"Yes, boss!"

The lackeys were brimming with confidence. ’They’d never gotten to ’play’ with sisters before. The thought alone was thrilling!’

A few of them couldn’t hold back and charged ahead, but as their flashlights cut through the gloom, they spotted a figure sitting on the stairs to the 11th floor.

In the dark stairwell, the sight was exceptionally eerie.

"Holy shit! Who the hell are you, sitting here in the middle of the night trying to scare people... Argh!"

But he was destined never to hear a reply.

"I’m the one you’re looking for."

The voice had barely faded when a flash of steel cut through the darkness.

Like a lightning strike in the dead of night, it momentarily lit up the stairs, revealing a figure with a chiseled, ice-cold face.

Just then, Liu Junjie, who had finally struggled to the front, yelled out.

"Brother Hu, that’s him! That’s Mengde!"

"He’s the one who killed your men!"

On the stairs to the 11th floor, Mengde stood with his blade ready, like a god of war shrouded in darkness.

His face was grim, and his deep, dark eyes shimmered with an inscrutable glint that could chill a man to the bone.

"Well, well, kid!"

"You actually dared to wait for me here!"

"Boys, get him! Cut him down!!!"

Brother Hu bellowed, and on his command, his men charged forward, their faces contorted with savagery.

"It’s your unlucky day, kid!"

"Go to hell!"

But the next second, with a CLANG of metal on metal...

"ARGH!!!"

The lackeys cried out in agony as a single swing from Mengde’s blade severed all of their arms.

Another flash of steel, and the heads of the charging men tumbled from their shoulders. Blood gushed from their necks like fountains.

Mengde felt no fear.

’He knew this was the brutal reality of the apocalypse. There were no laws to hold anyone back, no morals to bind them. The ugliest side of humanity was free to erupt! If he wasn’t ruthless, he would be the one lying dead! That’s why in the apocalypse, you kill the saints first. It was as simple as that!’

Torrents of hot blood gushed down the stairwell, quickly forming a pool on the floor below.

Every flashlight was now fixed on Mengde.

"Step any further, and you die!!!"

As Mengde’s frigid voice echoed through the stairwell, Brother Hu’s men instinctively took a step back.

Liu Junjie, who had been screaming for Mengde’s head just moments before, was now so terrified he was drenched in a cold sweat.

’It’s only been a few days!’

’How did that kid Mengde change so completely?’

’He kills without the slightest hesitation!’

For a moment, Liu Junjie was frozen in fear, a cold sweat breaking out across his body.

’Oh god... I used to bully him... He probably doesn’t remember, right...?’

But it wasn’t just Liu Junjie; even Brother Hu was shaken.

’He had been a kingpin in the criminal underworld for years, but this was the first time he’d ever encountered someone so savage. The man had cut down several of his underlings without a word. He knew it instantly: they’d picked a fight with a real monster.’

’But there was no way to retreat now.’

Gritting his teeth, Brother Hu roared.

"All of you, get him! Whoever kills him gets a case of instant noodles and two women!"

In the apocalypse, women had become commodities to be traded, sometimes worth even less than food.

As the saying goes: a hefty reward is all it takes to make a man brave.

Brother Hu’s men were swayed.

Besides, their boss was already leading the charge, brandishing his long blade.

And so, the remaining lackeys followed suit.

"Die, you bastard!"
