Chapter 260: Chapter 144: Saturation Information Delivery
"I will do my best, Major Li," Xu Mo said solemnly as he took the keys.
Major Li patted him on the shoulder, said no more, and turned to greet the next Messenger to arrive.
Xu Mo found the off-road vehicle with the number 56. It sat quietly in the middle of a row of vehicles. Its dark green body glinted with a hard, cold sheen in the morning light. The raised chassis, rugged bulletproof glass, and sturdy front bumper all spoke to its reliable performance.
Opening the car door, a smell—a mixture of new car, engine oil, rubber, and metal—hit him in the face.
The interior was spacious. Both the driver’s compartment and the back seat were piled with cardboard boxes and waterproof bags stamped with the Jiang City logo. An open box sat on the front passenger seat, containing an issued tablet, a document pouch with maps, official papers, and identification credentials, and—most importantly—the silver metal information cylinder.
The back seat and trunk were even more packed to the brim: cases of field rations, water, fuel cans, a toolbox, a tent, sleeping bags, and so on.
Xu Mo did a quick inventory, and it mostly matched the checklist. He closed the car door and began moving his own personal belongings over. His backpack and a few miscellaneous items were stuffed into whatever remaining crevices he could find inside the vehicle.
Finally, Xu Mo glanced at the empty roof rack, then turned and walked back to the old off-road vehicle he had driven here. He still had a door to bring with him.
Under the slightly bewildered gazes of a few nearby staff members and Messengers who were loading their own vehicles or just passing by, Xu Mo hoisted the door horizontally onto the roof rack of vehicle #56.
"Brother, what are you...?" a burly Messenger next to him, who was in the middle of tying down his own luggage, couldn’t help but ask. "Why are you bringing a door?"
Xu Mo smiled but didn’t explain. "Just a habit," he said. "Think of it as a lucky charm."
He took out the securing ropes that came with the vehicle and began to carefully and firmly tie the door down to the roof rack.
A staff member nearby saw Xu Mo working at it and came over to help him tighten and secure the final rope.
"Thanks," Xu Mo said to the staff member who had helped.
"No problem, sir... uh, comrade." The staff member scratched his head and cast a curious glance at the door on the roof, but said nothing.
With the "door" secured, Xu Mo did a final check of the vehicle: tire pressure, fuel gauge, lights, and so on. Everything was ready.
He got into the driver’s seat and closed the door. The cab was well-sealed, blocking out most of the noise from outside.
He gave the key a light turn. VROOOM—
The deep rumble of the engine started up smoothly. The dashboard indicator lights came on one by one. All systems normal.
Xu Mo took a deep breath, feeling the power of the steel beast beneath him. He rolled down the window and looked toward the warehouse entrance.
Major Li seemed to have finished up with most of his duties. He was now standing there, his gaze sweeping over the convoy of vehicles preparing to depart.
When his eyes met Xu Mo’s, Major Li nodded again. Then, he raised his right hand and gave Xu Mo a standard military salute.
No shouts, no wave goodbye—just a silent salute.
Xu Mo gave a solemn nod in return. Then he put the vehicle in gear, and the off-roader began to move slowly.
The wheels crunched over the rough concrete in front of the warehouse. Xu Mo drove, steering slowly toward the exit of the warehouse district.
In front of him and behind, the other Messengers’ vehicles started up one by one. The roar of engines rose and fell, merging into a torrent ready to be unleashed.
Xu Mo took one last look in his rearview mirror at the majestic silhouette of Jiang City, now receding into the distance. It held the life he had just started to get used to, people who could almost be called friends, and a semblance of safety and order.
The next moment, Xu Mo looked away, his gaze turning sharp and determined. He slammed his foot down on the accelerator.
The engine let out a low growl. The dark green off-roader shot forward, and wind poured in through the open window, carrying the unique, earthy smell of the wilderness.
Ahead lay Ming Pearl Port, three thousand five hundred kilometers away.
The journey had begun.
