Chapter 259: Chapter 144: Saturation Information Transmission

"You have time to fill these out. Your beneficiary can be a relative, a friend, or a comrade-in-arms. Alternatively, you can donate it to the Command Department as a public fund. Think carefully, write clearly, and hand it to the staff when you are finished. Then, you may return to your quarters to make your final personal preparations. Tomorrow morning at eight o’clock sharp, assemble at Military Warehouse Number Three on the west side of the city. You will collect your vehicles and all your supplies, and decide on your respective departure times. All Messengers must depart by midnight tomorrow, at the latest."

The only sound in the classroom was the scratching of pen tips on paper. The atmosphere was so heavy it felt almost stagnant.

Xu Mo held his pen, his eyes falling on the beneficiary section. He was silent for a moment.

’He had no family in this world. His old acquaintance from Cyan Pine Ridge, Wang Meng, was secretive and unpredictable—hardly a friend he could entrust anything to. Then there was Zhang Yun. The retired female soldier who still struggled to hold on to her integrity and warmth in this apocalyptic world. The partner who had lost sleep worrying over his poor condition. The comrade whose eyes had flashed with disappointment when she learned he was leaving, yet still wished him a safe journey.’

An image of Zhang Yun’s forced smile appeared in Xu Mo’s mind, along with her softly spoken words, "You have to come back safely."

Xu Mo raised his pen and neatly wrote two words in the beneficiary section: "Zhang Yun." In the property disposal section, he added a note: "The small courtyard in the Inner City and all items within, as well as my entire balance of Contribution Points, are to be placed entirely at the disposal of Zhang Yun."

This was perhaps the last thing he could leave for his short-term partner before he departed.

He signed his name and ID number: Xu Mo, 802561.

After handing the two signed documents to a staff member who walked over, Xu Mo felt a strange sense of relief. It was as if a weight had been lifted from his mind, allowing him to focus more completely on the road ahead.

Leaving the Information Command Department building, he found the sunlight outside a bit harsh. Without delay, Xu Mo headed straight back to his small courtyard in the Inner City.

Pushing open the courtyard gate, Xu Mo looked at the place he hadn’t actually lived in for very long but which already bore many signs of his life. A flicker of emotion truly did stir within him.

This had been the first "home" he’d found in the apocalypse after crossing over, a safe harbor where he could train in peace and rest for a time. Unfortunately, stability was always the greatest luxury in an apocalyptic world.

Xu Mo didn’t have much time for sentiment. He began to quickly pack his personal belongings.

Most of the issued survival supplies would be collected tomorrow. He only needed to pack his own essential, personal items.

A few changes of clothes suitable for fieldwork, some small tools he was used to carrying, a multi-tool, a high-intensity flashlight, a flint and steel, a water canteen, and so on. And of course, the most important things—his guns.

His AK-47 with several magazines, the Barrett and its specialized ammunition, the TT-33, and his Mountain-Cutting Saber and Triangular Spike.

When Xu Mo’s gaze fell on the long, cold AWM sniper rifle leaning against the wall, and the small case of matching .338 Lapua Magnum ammunition beside it, he paused.

’Should I take it? An extra high-precision, long-range weapon would seem to offer more security.’

But after a moment’s thought, Xu Mo shook his head.

The Barrett’s power and range far exceeded the AWM’s, giving it an advantage when dealing with potential heavily armored targets or threats at extreme distances.

Their functions overlapped to some extent, and carrying two large-caliber sniper rifles with their specialized ammunition would be a significant burden on both storage space and carry weight. Although he had a storage space, it was better to make resources more effective than to carry redundant gear.

More importantly, Xu Mo thought of Zhang Yun. She was an excellent sharpshooter but used a standard-issue rifle. If he left this AWM for her, it might become a life-saving tool or the key to completing a mission at a critical moment.

’Since I’ve already named her as my beneficiary, leaving her another practical weapon would be an even more tangible gift.’

Xu Mo carefully wiped down the AWM and put it back, along with the case of ammunition.

After another thought, Xu Mo found a piece of paper and wrote, "For Zhang Yun. Use it carefully. Take care. —Xu Mo," and placed it under the rifle.

Having done all this, Xu Mo scanned the room one last time, confirming there was nothing else that needed special attention.

Night fell, and Xu Mo lay down early. He needed plenty of rest to face the long and unknown journey that was about to begin.

He slept surprisingly soundly that night.

The next morning, Xu Mo was up just as dawn was breaking. After finishing all his preparations, he drove his own SUV toward Military Warehouse Number Three on the west side of the city.

The warehouse was located near the western city wall of Jiang City, in a heavily guarded area. When he arrived, dozens of dark green SUVs were already parked neatly in the open space before the massive warehouse doors.

People bustled about beside the vehicles. Staff members were conducting final checks and registrations, while Messengers who had already received their vehicles were loading their personal belongings.

Major Li was standing at the warehouse entrance, handing over documents to several other officers. He saw Xu Mo get out of his vehicle and walk over, and gave him a nod.

The process was quick: identity verification, a signature for confirmation, and then Major Li picked up a car key with a deep blue number tag from a tray held by a nearby soldier and handed it to Xu Mo.

"Vehicle 56. Everything’s already inside, but you should double-check the inventory yourself. The roof rack is free for you to use." Major Li’s voice was as calm as ever, but as he looked at Xu Mo, his eyes seemed to hold a hint of some imperceptible, complex emotion.

"Xu Mo, take care. Get there alive, and bring the message back alive. Jiang City is waiting for your good news."

He didn’t offer any more words of encouragement or sentimentality, but Xu Mo could feel the heavy weight of expectation and trust in his words.
