Chapter 165: Chapter 113: Going Out
Xu Mo frowned, surveying the area for a moment before turning to jump down into the temporary base. However, just as he was about to leap, he suddenly felt as if he were being watched.
Since reaching the Cowhide Realm, Xu Mo’s five senses had been greatly enhanced, making him extremely perceptive to danger. If not for this, he likely would have met a bitter end on the road to Jiang City.
It wasn’t the same as being watched by the zombies below. Their gazes were chaotic, greedy, and blunt. Sometimes, Xu Mo even wondered if they could truly see people at all.
This feeling, however, was far more covert—more like a scrutinizing lock-on.
The moment he realized he was being targeted, Xu Mo tensed. Sheathing his Mountain-Cutting Saber, he smoothly raised his AK, scanning in the direction the gaze was coming from.
’A Level 2 Zombie?’
With this question in mind, Xu Mo narrowed his eyes and began to scan the area.
’If it really is a Level 2 Zombie,’ he thought, ’I’ll fire a few rounds to test the waters. If I’m outmatched, I’ll just turn and run.’
As Xu Mo remained tense, trying to pinpoint the source of that cold gaze, a flicker of movement in a collapsed pile of rubble caught the corner of his eye.
There, in a shadowy crevice of the ruins, a head—or rather, something with the silhouette of a human head—was partially visible, spying on him.
It moved with extreme speed, almost merging with the shadows of the rubble, but its posture was decidedly inhuman.
’An Agile Zombie.’ The moment he identified the target, Xu Mo’s taut nerves surprisingly relaxed a little.
Compared to an unknown Level 2 mutated zombie that could possess special abilities, this first-stage evolution known for its speed was, despite being troublesome, a familiar "old foe" he was confident he could handle.
As if sensing it had been spotted, the Agile Zombie stopped hiding.
It let out a sharp, short shriek, then pushed off powerfully with all four limbs, landing with an agile leap atop the highest point of the rubble.
The Agile Zombie on the rubble crouched low, its murky eyes locked onto Xu Mo for two seconds. Then, like some malformed cheetah, it took off on all fours, dashing rapidly through the ruins and broken walls. Its speed far surpassed that of an ordinary zombie—several times faster than even the "trotter" types he had previously encountered—as it charged straight for the wall where Xu Mo stood.
Facing the approaching threat, Xu Mo was exceptionally calm. He quickly calculated the distance and the creature’s erratic trajectory, swinging the AK-47 from his back to his front. Raising the rifle, aiming, and pulling the trigger were all a single, fluid motion, as smooth as breathing.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
Three precise shots. Hitting a vital spot on a high-speed target was difficult. Two bullets tore into the Agile Zombie’s chest and abdomen, sending out splatters of dark blood, while the third struck one of its flailing forelimbs.
"RAAAGH—!"
The wounded zombie let out a pained shriek. The impact threw off its fluid pounce, causing it to lose its balance in mid-air. It tumbled to the ground not far from the wall, kicking up a cloud of dust.
The Agile Zombie struggled to rise, its movements clearly sluggish from the pain and its injuries.
’An opening!’
Xu Mo wouldn’t let such a fleeting opening pass. He made a minute adjustment to his aim, his sights locking firmly onto the zombie’s head, which was tilted slightly upward in pain.
BANG!
The fourth bullet whizzed through the air and drilled precisely into its crimson, murky eye socket.
SPLAT!
Like a rotten watermelon smashed by a sledgehammer, the back of the Agile Zombie’s head exploded. A viscous mixture of red and white sprayed backward onto the rubble-strewn ground. Its body convulsed violently a few times, then went completely still.
From spotting it to killing it, the entire process had taken only a few seconds. The echo of the gunshots still reverberated through the empty ruins.
Only now did the continuous gunfire seem to finally startle the common zombies below the wall, who had been drawn in by the corpses of their own kind and were busy frantically gnawing and fighting over them.
They vacantly stopped their gnawing, lifting their filth-covered heads and turning their stiff necks to search for the new source of the sound...
Perhaps drawn by the fresh scent of the newly slain Agile Zombie, some of the zombies began to shuffle toward its corpse.
Standing on the wall, Xu Mo watched as the zombies devoured all the corpses. Only after confirming that no new mutated zombies appeared among them did he finally leap down from the wall and head into the temporary base.
