Chapter 164: Chapter 113: Going Out

Xu Mo completely ignored the zombies. He’d had to kill them earlier to leave, but now there was no point.

’Besides, if I kill these zombies and the others eat their corpses, won’t they just evolve into a Level 1 zombie?’

Keeping a few meters away from the zombies, Xu Mo changed direction and ran toward his previous temporary base to check on the situation there.

’After I moved into the fortress, some people still hadn’t fully evacuated the temporary base. I wonder what’s happening inside now.’

After running for about a hundred meters, Xu Mo glanced back. The zombies along his path had sensed his presence and were now trailing him, but they hadn’t entered the fortress.

These zombies were slow. Aside from their hideous faces and mindless roars, they posed no threat to him. In fact, they weren’t a threat to any ordinary person who could overcome their fear. All one had to do was rationally keep their distance.

’If they didn’t eat their own kind, a normal person could easily wipe them all out by kiting them with a gun.’

His mind made up, Xu Mo stopped looking at the zombies trailing him and ran straight for the temporary base.

Along the way, more zombies sensed his presence and gave chase. Before long, Xu Mo realized he had more than a hundred of them trailing him.

However, their mobility was poor, and they could only lag far behind him.

’What if I set a trap up ahead, had someone kite the monsters, lured these zombies into a pit, and then picked them off one by one? Would that work?’ As he watched the zombies trailing him, the part of his brain that thought like a gamer pulling mobs lit up.

He mulled it over. It seemed genuinely possible, but only on the condition that all the zombies chasing him were the slow-moving kind.

’Hm?’

The thought had barely crossed his mind when Xu Mo spotted three much faster zombies rapidly approaching from his left.

Judging by their appearance, they were still ordinary zombies, not yet at the standard of a Level 1 Zombie, but their movement speed was already much faster—about the pace of a person’s light jog.

It was as if these three had just learned how to run. Though he was their target, they staggered and weaved. If it weren’t for their flailing arms helping them maintain some semblance of balance, Xu Mo figured they’d trip over their own feet.

’You’d need an electric scooter to kite this kind,’ Xu Mo noted sagely as he watched the three zombies run toward him, then he continued on his way.

THUD~

As if to prove his point, one of the three jogging zombies, apparently unable to handle the uneven ground, stumbled and fell flat on its face after just a short distance. Its flailing arm nearly dragged one of its companions down with it.

The uneven ground smashed the fallen zombie’s face, and blood began to pour from it. Even so, it continued to snarl and roar at Xu Mo, as if trying to devour him from afar.

’Tough bastard.’

After that brief thought, Xu Mo turned his head forward and kept running.

In just a short while, Xu Mo reached the entrance of the temporary base. By now, more than twenty of the faster, jogging zombies were following him.

Perhaps because Xu Mo hadn’t changed direction, the twenty-odd zombies had formed a ragged line as they rushed toward his position.

"Tsk, tsk, tsk."

After a few "tsks," Xu Mo glanced at the area near the base’s entrance. A dozen or so zombies there had also sensed his presence and were now shuffling toward him, roaring. Among them were two or three of the faster kind.

Being hemmed in from the front and back suddenly made the situation feel a lot less fun. Kiting zombies was only viable in open areas; if he entered a narrow space where he didn’t know the layout, things could go south real quick.

Mountain-Cutting Saber in hand, Xu Mo ignored the zombies at his back and charged toward the dozen or so coming from the front.

The zombies in front were fast, but still far too slow for Xu Mo. With a few swift slashes of his Mountain-Cutting Saber, he dispatched the three faster ones.

Probably due to a lack of hydration, no fountains of blood erupted when their heads were severed from their bodies. Blood just gurgled from the corpses. Some even seemed to playfully blow a few bubbles from their necks, a rather whimsical sight.

Since everyone had evacuated, the main gate of the temporary base was closed, and a pile of things was barricading it from behind. It looked like the barricade wasn’t just to keep zombies out.

That wasn’t a problem for Xu Mo, though. After a quick look around, he got a running start, kicked off the wall, and grabbed the top. With a powerful heave of his arms, he vaulted over.

Standing on the wall, Xu Mo watched as a few nearby zombies shambled over to its base, fruitlessly reaching up in an attempt to get him.

Some of the zombies didn’t approach, however. They went over to the three corpses and began to feast. The scene was so gruesome it would’ve been censored if described.

Just then, the horde of zombies that had been following Xu Mo finally arrived. They completely ignored him standing on the wall and immediately joined the feast. And because there wasn’t much food to go around, a few zombies became so absorbed in their meal that they went from being diners to being dinner. A cacophony of roars and tearing flesh filled the air.
