Apocalypse Arrives: I Become a Powerhouse by Scavenging
Chapter 628 - 618: Zombie 13
Moira Lynch shook her head. "More accurately, it’s culling them to create a stronger one. The Crystal Cores of level-three zombies are no longer enough for the level-five zombie, so it wants to use this method to evolve a level-four, or even a level-five, zombie for it to devour."
"Well, that’s certainly..."
Shane Rhodes didn’t know whether to call the zombie smart or cruel.
Moira Lynch told Shane Rhodes the zombies’ location while she went to see if there was anything worth taking.
As a high-end club that catered to the wealthy, the place exuded an air of understated grandeur, from its exterior to its interior, including the decor.
Even now, with the place dirty and in disarray, it was still clear that the owner had put a lot of care into the decorations.
A high-end club like this was bound to have fine cigars and liquor.
Moira Lynch found many bottles in the liquor cabinet whose names she didn’t recognize.
However, many of them had been smashed. Various liquors had spilled all over the floor, and the alcohol had mostly evaporated by now, leaving behind only a mess and shards of glass.
Moira Lynch selected the bottles that were still intact and stored them, along with the entire liquor cabinet, in her Space Button.
A high-end club wouldn’t just have this much liquor. Besides, the truly good stuff is never left out in the open.
Moira Lynch’s spiritual power swept over every corner.
’Huh? Shane Rhodes has already taken care of those zombies? That was faster than I expected. Looks like he’s gotten stronger again.’
After scanning every area, Moira Lynch soon made a new find.
’Just as I thought. The really good stuff wouldn’t be left out in the open so carelessly.’
Besides the liquor, this time she also collected a batch of cigars.
’Considering how excited everyone got when I brought out cigarettes before, cigars should be pretty popular too... right?’
It was just a shame that there wasn’t much food here, and what little there was had all gone bad.
Just then, Shane Rhodes came down from the second floor, holding several noticeably larger Crystal Cores.
Then, a loud noise and an indignant roar echoed from outside.
"Looks like Snowy’s battle is over too," Shane Rhodes said, handing two Crystal Stones to Moira Lynch.
"When I got there, a few zombies had already been devoured. Among the five that were left, there was one Fire Element Zombie, one Speed Zombie, one Strength Zombie, one Ice-type Zombie, and one Spiritual Zombie."
The cores Shane Rhodes was holding out were from the Ice-type Zombie and the Spiritual Zombie.
The Spirit Attribute Crystal Core was surprisingly white.
Moira Lynch looked at the Crystal Core in her hand, feeling the abundant ability sealed within it, a joyful smile spreading across her face.
Just then, Snowy trotted in cheerfully from outside, a purple Crystal Core held in its mouth.
The instant he saw the Crystal Core, Shane Rhodes made his move.
He snatched the Crystal Core, an unconcealable smile spreading across his face.
After leaving the clubhouse, the two of them came to a nearby supermarket.
This time, they didn’t have to worry about scaring off their targets, so they walked over openly, even deliberately making some noise to attract zombies.
They had their reasons for doing this.
This city was far too close to Dawnlight Base.
Take that level-five zombie, for example. If they hadn’t suddenly appeared and interrupted its plan, it probably would have made a move on Dawnlight Base after it finished its ’meal’.
It’s like having a delicious cake placed right in front of you. When you know it has no way to fight back, could you really resist taking a slice?
Impossible.
They cleared out a considerable number of zombies along the way, harvesting plenty of Crystal Cores. By the time they reached the supermarket, the surrounding area was mostly clear of them.
They planned to get in and out quickly, before the next wave of zombies arrived.
The moment they pushed open the supermarket doors, the stench of rotting flesh mixed with decaying fruit hit them in the face.
The stench came not only from the zombies but even more so from the meat in the freezers, which had started to decay after the power went out, along with the rotten vegetables and fruits.
The place had clearly been picked clean by others already. The shelves were almost completely bare, with only a few unwanted items left in the general merchandise section.
They picked up some daily necessities from the general merchandise section before heading straight for the supermarket’s warehouse.
The lock on the warehouse door was still intact, which meant the contents inside likely hadn’t been touched.
Finding the key was impossible; who knew which zombie might have had it on them?
Shane Rhodes simply summoned a bolt of lightning, which struck the lock and blasted it open, revealing stacks of boxes filled with supplies inside.
"There’s so much stuff. Even if we fill up your Space Button, we can’t possibly take it all," Shane Rhodes said.
But leaving any of it behind felt like a waste, even though they both knew they couldn’t possibly use it all.
They just couldn’t stand the thought of all these supplies being left here, only to be ruined by zombies.
For two people accustomed to never wasting food, the idea was hard to swallow.
"Alright, I’ll open a Subspace. Let’s see if I can fit everything inside," Moira Lynch said.
"I thought you weren’t good at that?" Shane Rhodes asked.
"Not being good at it doesn’t mean I can’t do it," Moira Lynch explained. "I had a better option before, so naturally I didn’t choose to open a Subspace."
’After all, who knew where a Subspace would even open up?’
’She’d never tried it before. After all, she had her own space, which was leagues better than some random Subspace.’
’But the tools she’d made before had the ability to open a space. Doing it herself shouldn’t be too hard. The tricky part would be the size of the Subspace.’
Moira Lynch closed her eyes and began trying to open a Subspace.
The sensation was mystical, like she was carving out a piece of territory in another dimension.
About an hour later, Moira Lynch opened her eyes.
"How’d it go? Did it work?" Shane Rhodes asked.
Moira Lynch frowned, hesitating for a moment. "I think so? Let me test it."
Then, a rift about a meter in diameter tore open beside her.
Through the rift, they could see an endless black void, looking as if it would suck them in at any moment.
"Don’t just stand there. Start loading. I don’t know how long I can keep this Subspace open. We need to move fast and head back."
"Right!"
The two of them then began moving everything into the Subspace, load by load. It took them a full hour to empty the entire warehouse.
And you didn’t think it would end there, did you? Of course not.
How could a large supermarket like this have only one warehouse?
