Chapter 640: Chapter 640 - Don’t do it

Alpha Allan had studied Corvine’s moves during the training with the pack and his fight with Brad, but sadly, he could not find any weakness to capitalize on.

Corvine did not fight with his eyes but his senses, as he had been taught, feeling the change in the air, the tension in his opponent’s muscles, the subtle tells that betrayed their intentions before they even moved.

Allan did not allow himself to be unconscious and readily gave up when he could not stand the pain of Corvine’s ruthlessness. He was also not as proud as Brad to take his ego to the hospital, so Corvine won again, cleanly, decisively, without breaking a sweat.

King Jaron was getting disappointed in the Alphas, his frustration mounting with each defeat. The carefully stacked deck was crumbling before his eyes.

Then an idea popped into his mind, a cruel gleam flickering in his eyes, and he announced, "Alpha Killian and Co-Alpha Corvine will fight in wolf form tomorrow."

A smug smile curled Killian’s lips. He was certain that Corvine still had a beta wolf, that the title was borrowed, the power unearned. After all, there hadn’t been any invitation for a Co-Alpha coronation at the Grimroot pack. To him, Corvine was just living the borrowed title but not the position itself.

Corvine’s expression remained neutral through it all, his face betraying nothing.

That night, Liah snuck into his room again with Jasper’s help. The shadows swallowed her form as she slipped through the door, her footsteps silent against the floor. "Corvine, I have everything prepared." Her voice was urgent, barely a whisper. "But what if they come without the red diamonds?"

Corvine took a deep breath, his hand finding hers in the darkness. "I’m sure they will. It’s very important to them. So if not for my coronation or theirs, then when else will they use it?"

"Alright." Liah nodded, her resolve firming. "We shall go ahead with the plan, and Jasper is keeping an eye on my dad. Should he change the crown, we’ll know what to do."

"Thank you so much, Liah." Corvine’s voice was thick with emotion. "You are the best thing that happened to me."

"It’s both sides, Corvine." A soft smile curved the corner of her lips. "I know Killian is no match for you." She smirked before going back the same way she came, slipping through the shadows like a ghost.

It took everything in her to not embrace Corvine and just remain there, to feel the warmth of his arms around her.

The next day, Corvine and Killian arrived at the pack grounds in only boxer shorts. Both leaders were well built, their bodies honed by years of training. But somehow, Corvine got the attention of all the she-wolves. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through wheat.

"Co-Alpha is so hot." A pack member whispered from afar, her eyes wide. "Goddess, is he even real?"

Another added, her voice dreamy, "He looks so yummy."

Killian’s expression darkened, his jaw clenching with barely contained fury. Ravyn was fighting back his laughter, his shoulders shaking with suppressed mirth. He wished Liah was there to hear the she-wolves fawning over her man.

The old beta chastised them, his voice sharp and disapproving. "Are you lusting after our princess’s man? Either of them will become the Alpha King and be married to the princess." The gossips ended instantly, their heads dropping with shame.

Ravyn stepped forward, his voice carrying across the pack grounds. "Shift."

Killian’s wolf took over, his brown furs covering his body, his claws extending and his paws hitting the ground the same time Corvine’s wolf Maddock took control. His grey fur was lighter than average, giving him a not so fearsome, appearance. Gasps erupted in the air.

"He doesn’t have an Alpha wolf yet." Someone gasped. "He’ll lose."

But Maddock assured his human, his voice a low rumble in Corvine’s mind. ’He’s no match for me. The only wolf I fear is that black one.’ A shudder ran through him at the memory. ’Goddess, the pain he inflicted is unforgettable.’

Corvine laughed, a warm sound that echoed through their connection. ’Go Mad. Get him. If not, we’ll lose the princess.’

’Never.’ Maddock sneered as he launched forward, his paws lifting as he leaped to avoid an attack from Killian’s wolf. He moved with fluid grace, a blur of grey fur, before sinking his canines deep into the neck of Killian’s wolf.

Blood gushed out as Killian’s wolf, Killer groaned from pain, his body thrashing beneath Maddock’s grip. But Maddock’s canines sank deeper, refusing to let Killian go. He held on with the tenacity of a wolf who knew exactly what was at stake.

It was only after Killian shifted to human form that Maddock let go and instantly gave Corvine control. Voren had taught him that since his Alpha wolf had not been awakened, a fight against an Alpha wolf was not advisable. The best strategy was targeting the weakest spot, and that was exactly what Maddock did. The training centered on how to get that spot, and now, he got it perfectly.

Killian was rushed to the pack hospital because his neck was bleeding, and he was unconscious. Since the injury was on his wolf, it was clear that his wolf would have to heal to be able to heal him. Thus, two Alphas hospitalized from fighting with a Co-Alpha.

"Corvine wins." Ravyn announced with a smile spreading across his face. Jasper threw Corvine a pair of shorts and a T-shirt, his grin wide.

Cheers erupted as they looked at King Jaron expectantly. The crowd buzzed with excitement, their eyes shining with admiration. But Jaron’s expression was grim, his jaw tight with barely controlled anger.

"It’s not over." His voice cut through the cheering like a blade. "There shall be a new contender tomorrow."

"Dad, that isn’t fair." Jasper objected, his voice sharp with outrage. "The contest was supposed to be—"

Jaron glared at him, his eyes cold and unyielding. "It’s supposed to be a seven-day event. Today is just the fifth day, so I have every right to introduce someone new."

"So, Corvine defeats that person, then there will be another one again?" Jasper’s voice rose with frustration. He feared a war with the Grimroot pack if his father went overboard, if he pushed Corvine too far.

Jaron’s response was curt, final. "No. If Corvine wins tomorrow, then we’ll send the invitations across for his coronation as Alpha King."

The darkness in his eyes made even Ravyn uncomfortable. There was something lurking beneath the surface, something cold and calculating.

That night, Liah snuck into Corvine’s room again. Her face was pale, her eyes wide with fear. "Corvine, I have a feeling that my dad will bring a Lycan to fight with you." Her voice trembled as she grabbed his hands. "Don’t do it."
