Chapter 632: Chapter 632 - I give up. How can I even win against you?
Ravyn was at the pack office, his gaze fixed on the computer screen, when he received a mindlink from the warriors at the gate. ’Alpha, we have a guest from the Silver Moon pack. They said they were sent by the Alpha King."
Ravyn’s brow furrowed with curiosity. "Bring them to my office."
Two men he had never seen walked into his office moments later. Their faces were unfamiliar, their builds unremarkable.
Ravyn had never seen them around any of the packs, but being from the Silver Moon pack, he offered them a seat with a casual gesture. "To what do I owe this visit?" He asked nonchalantly, his gaze on the laptop in front of him.
Well, they didn’t beat about the bush at all. "Alpha Ravyn," one of them said. "We won’t give you our names because King Jaron only sent us to deliver this message."
The first man spoke, his voice flat and professional. "He said it would be suspicious if he came himself or used any of his pack members."
Ravyn lifted his gaze from his computer, his eyes sharp and assessing. "What is the message?"
"Well, there are two things." The man held up two fingers. "The first is a business collaboration, and the second is marriage. Which do you want to hear first?"
Ravyn was disinterested in both, his expression remaining neutral. But he wished to know their plans, to understand what King Jaron was scheming. "Whichever one you are okay with."
"Okay." The man nodded, leaning forward slightly. "King Jaron wants you to contest for the hand of the princess. He’s certain you can win against Corvine because you trained him." He paused, his eyes glinting. "That’s in case the other Alphas fail."
Ravyn had been a fool once, blinded by obsession and pride. But now, all he wanted was to make amends, to somehow atone for the sins of his past.
Corvine was the reason his daughter was alive, the reason Espe had been protected. How could he go against him? "I shall think about it," he said carefully, not making his intentions known.
"There is also a great business opportunity with the mafia." The second man spoke up, his voice smooth and persuasive. "But this one is legal. It’s all about importing and exporting firearms."
Ravyn was not interested in such businesses. They reeked of trouble, of the kind of dealings that destroyed packs from the inside. Mafia business was a no go territory for someone who wanted peace.
He didn’t want to be constantly watching his back and casually responded, his voice flat. "Tell King Jaron that we shall talk during the Blood Moon festival."
Not taking a stand, they felt that he agreed—a dangerous assumption. So they stood up and left, their footsteps echoing in the empty corridor.
However, two people came again after a few hours with the same offer. The next day, the same thing happened again. The consistency of the visits was alarming, a clear indication that King Jaron was persistent in his schemes.
Ravyn’s responses remained the same, vague, and noncommittal. But the level of consistency was also an indication that King Jaron might be planning something evil against Corvine.
Corvine was loyal throughout his time as Beta of the Centenary pack and his resignation was justified as well. The thought of whatever King Jaron was planning gnawed at Ravyn, stirring old loyalties. So Ravyn called Voren.
Voren had just gotten down from the chopper after returning from the seasoned pack. Everything had gone well, and both he and Damon needed a few hours of rest.
But his phone rang in the elevator, the shrill sound cutting through the silence.
Seeing Ravyn’s name on the screen, he didn’t want to answer it, thinking it was concerning Esperanza. But with the Blood Moon festival close, they were bound to host him anyway. So he answered it, his voice guarded. "What is it again, Ravyn? Do you so eagerly want to die? I can grant your wish."
To his surprise, it wasn’t about Esperanza as he thought. "Voren, Corvine might be in for a surprise." Ravyn’s voice was serious, carrying a note of urgency. "King Jaron is recruiting more Alphas to fight for the hand of the princess. He reached out to me, and I told him I’ll think about it."
It was clear to Voren that Ravyn was not interested. If not, Ravyn would have accepted the offer without informing him, would have kept his plans hidden. "So why are you telling me this?"
"Simple." Ravyn’s voice was flat, matter-of-fact. "Corvine didn’t kill my daughter, so I owe him." He paused, allowing Voren to digest his words. "They also made me some mafia business offers. I’m not interested, but I’ll invest a few million just so I can know what they’re up to."
Voren froze, his mind racing. It was very hard for him to know if Ravyn was being real because the only feud they’d ever had was matters concerning Seraphine.
Well, Ravyn was even the reason Voren got to know Seraphine in the first place—a twist of fate that still amazed him. "Ravyn, what do you want in all this?" His voice was cautious, probing.
There was a long sigh before Ravyn responded, his voice heavy with emotion. "I miss you, Voren." The words hung in the air, raw and unexpected. "I give up. How can I even win against you?"
"Ravyn—" Voren was saying, his voice softening.
But Ravyn’s voice cut through, desperate and teary. "Fine. I give up on Sera. And I know I can’t take my daughter from you." He paused, his breath hitching.
"I’ve thought through it, and no court in both human and werewolf community will rule in my favor." His voice cracked. "Please, for just once. Let me see her. That’s all I ask."
The tears were evident now, breaking through his carefully constructed walls. "I know she doesn’t like me. And though I’ve seen her before, I didn’t know she was mine. So let me see her as my daughter. That’s all I ask."
