All My Summons Become Divine Girls

Chapter 585: God Offers Silence

  • Next Chapter

The smell of bread reached Hajin before the water did.

For a moment he was looking at Tessa’s basket, expecting the keeper beside it to offer somebody another heel, then brown water struck a wall inside the first opening.

His throat closed.

"No."

The answer came before the voice had finished forming his name.

Across the plate, three other windows widened, the nearest filling with pale mountain trees while a taste of iron settled behind his tongue.

The protected child slid off her chair beside Juna, Elina moving with her until Vella held a hand low enough for the girl to choose it.

"Back from the plate," Hajin told the waiting residents.

The brothers moved the chairs away without arguing, the older one lifting the end nearest the flooded window while his brother guided the woman with the shawl toward the stairs.

"I have offered relief," the voice said.

It came from all four openings, quiet enough that Hajin could hear the wet slap of the flood beneath it.

His body remembered trying to draw a breath where there had been none.

’Not yours to take.’

He forced his gaze down to the registry’s edge, finding the black mark beneath the plate while Vella watched the exposed lines around the windows.

"No answer has been accepted," she said.

Four pale bands appeared across the lower openings, each ending in a blank space wide enough for a hand.

"The terror can end without ending you," the voice continued, the band beneath Hajin’s flood image flattening like a clean dressing laid beside an injury.

"I answered."

The water kept moving behind it.

He wanted to smash the window badly enough that his right hand curled, ready to call his blade before he stopped, remembering the living connections people had just trusted to the plate.

Vella glanced at his hand.

"Still an offer," she said, keeping her attention on its edge, "nothing is leaving anyone."

Hajin lowered his fingers to his side.

The flood band withdrew a fraction, its empty signature space dimming beneath his refusal.

The next window smelled of forge iron.

Cessy stood in front of it with both arms close to her body, her eyes following a line of writing that Hajin could not read from beside the first opening.

"Audits," she said before he asked.

Her mouth twisted around the word.

The window’s light caught the cloth over her burned wrist, making the stains beneath it look darker.

"You may retain every useful lesson," the voice told her, "the fear need not accompany the knowledge."

"Useful to whom?"

"To you."

Cessy looked at the blank place on the band, drawing her hand farther into her coat.

"Then you can survive hearing no."

Her window dimmed beside Hajin’s, the iron smell lingering after the offered signature stopped approaching her.

"Forever?" the voice asked.

Cessy’s expression hardened.

"For now is the answer I gave you."

Hajin saw Lucan move beside her, leaving space between their injured arms while he faced the plate with her.

Cessy accepted the company without looking away from the window.

The third opening stirred Juna’s hair.

She had stopped breathing through her mouth, her ears angled toward the pine branches moving inside it.

Hajin knew the mountain smell before she spoke, recognizing the way her fingers pressed against the edge of her own sleeve.

"Don’t show me the fire."

The branches remained green above the snow.

"It is the fire I offer to remove."

Juna’s jaw tightened.

The child moved closer to her side, stopping with the same one-foot-forward hesitation before the last opening.

Milk warmed somewhere inside that window.

Hajin could not see a nursery, only the edge of a pale room beyond an iron fastening, the smell making the girl’s shoulders draw upward.

She rubbed one wrist with her free hand.

Vella stayed beside her, palm open at the girl’s other side while Elina pulled the vacated chair back from the plate.

"You may sleep without that room," the voice said.

The child looked at the signature band.

Hajin felt a hard, immediate certainty rise in him, every instinct trying to put the answer into her mouth before the thing could ask again.

Then Juna spoke.

"What else goes?"

He turned toward her.

She was watching the trees with a concentration that made him stay quiet, her silver eyes following the movement between the trunks.

"You say the massacre," she continued, "do I lose my mother calling me before it, or only the part where I couldn’t get to her?"

The branches moved in a wind that did not reach the floor.

"The suffering is the burden."

"That’s not what I asked."

Her tail had gone still behind her legs.

Hajin stepped beside her, placing his shoulder between hers and the brightest part of the window without blocking her view of the band.

She shifted close enough for their sleeves to touch.

"If I remember the hut, do I remember who lived there?" she asked, "if somebody said my name while I was frightened, do I keep their voice?"

The offered band stayed blank.

"Relief can be shaped to what you choose."

Juna looked down at her own hand.

"I need to understand what that means before I choose."

Hajin glanced at her, finding an anger beneath her uncertainty that had nothing to do with weakness.

She looked tired of having to be certain while the memory was standing open in front of her.

"Take the time," he said.

"Even if my answer isn’t ready when everyone starts staring?"

He turned toward the nearest people still watching, the brothers quickly finding another chair that needed moving.

"Especially then."

Juna let out a breath that shook once before it steadied.

Beside her, the child pulled her wrist against her chest, copying the angle of Juna’s elbow while she studied the last window.

"I want time too."

The words were small enough that Hajin had to bend his head to hear the last one.

Vella brought the chair closer without placing the girl in it.

"You can sit while you have it."

The child sat, keeping her feet together where the chair’s shadow ended before the plate.

"Does later make it worse?" she asked.

Hajin followed her gaze to the untouched band, noticing how its clean edge resembled the dressings laid out beside Vella’s work.

"The offer remains," the voice replied.

The girl rubbed her thumb against the chair’s edge.

"They used to say hold still."

Vella lowered herself beside the chair, bringing her face level with the child’s without taking the wrist the girl held against her chest.

"You can move."

The child slid one foot backward, testing the distance to the ordinary floor behind her before setting it down again.

Hajin watched her choose that small movement, the iron fastening in the window making his stomach tighten.

"Can I go upstairs before I know?"

"I’ll walk with you when you want," Elina said.

The girl looked at Juna, finding her still studying the pine branches rather than reaching for the offered band.

"A little longer."

Elina stayed beside the clear path, leaving the answer where the child had put it while Vella watched the window’s open edge.

Hajin drew the nearest loose chair farther back with his foot, giving them enough room to stand without passing the signature space.

Ash stood near his mother at the rear of the giant-built hall, his rose-gold eyes squeezed shut as he pressed his face into the shelter of her hand.

"It smells different in every direction," he complained.

The Watcher lowered her hand enough for him to lean comfortably, her other palm remaining between him and the windows.

"You can keep your eyes closed."

"I am keeping them closed."

Hajin heard the tremor beneath the annoyance, wishing the voice would give him one solid throat to put his fist through.

Instead he asked Ferra to move the lamp, its ordinary yellow light falling across the clear path back to the stairs.

The child watched that path before returning her attention to Juna.

Hajin kept the public view on the decision rows, moving it away from the open memories before the Stream could settle on the details inside them.

[ ashley: give them room ]

[ night_shift: still here when they need us ]

Juna read the word unresolved, rubbing her thumb along a rough place in her sleeve.

"I hate that word."

"Want the panel smaller?"

"Yes."

He folded it down to the edge of his view, the trees becoming less crowded when the row stopped floating beside her face.

Cessy looked across from her dimmed window.

"I don’t know what I’ll want when I’m tired enough," she said, her voice losing its earlier bite, "I know what I want standing here."

Juna met her eyes briefly.

"That’s more useful than telling me how brave I am."

"I wasn’t going to."

The corner of Juna’s mouth moved, then the smell of pine reached her again and the small expression faded.

Hajin stayed beside her while Vella checked the four exposed boundaries, the spirit’s violet line pausing at each offered band without entering the memories beyond.

At Vella’s request, the lamp keeper marked a clear watch position beside the stairs, where the two unresolved windows would remain visible after the residents left.

"No taking anything while we think," Juna told the plate.

"A willing signature is required."

"Keep saying it where she can hear."

The child raised her eyes at that, looking from Juna to the untouched space on her own band.

Hajin brought her a cup from the clean table, holding it where she could take it without leaning toward the opening.

She drank with both hands around it, the ordinary act slowing the tight rise and fall of her shoulders.

Outside the hall, the last kitchen keeper called for someone to carry the bread upstairs before it cooled.

Juna listened to the voice, her gaze leaving the pine branches at last.

"Walk with me?"

"Where?"

"Somewhere the air belongs outside."

Hajin waited while she told Vella she was leaving her answer open, the child hearing the same assurance before Elina offered to accompany her back to the protected room.

The two pale bands remained unsigned as Juna turned toward the northern stairs, his shoulder staying beside hers through the ordinary doorway.
