All My Summons Become Divine Girls
Chapter 584: The Wanted Bond
Tessa reached the registry carrying a flour sack with something heavy knocking against its bottom, her first look at Hajin making him move out of her way.
"Is that another plate?"
"An oven fitting."
"Of course it is."
She set it on the nearest clear bench, pushing a loose strand of hair away from her mouth with the back of her wrist.
Behind her, the residents waiting at the opened hall began moving forward, their conversations thinning when they saw the circles on the registry plate.
Hajin recognized the older man from the clinic by the care with which he helped his wife around the bench, her chosen fast still making each step slow.
A pair of brothers arrived arguing about which of them had failed to hear the evacuation bell.
"He sleeps through everything," the younger one told Vella.
"You rang it while I was carrying your cupboard."
"Which is why I’m asking for an alarm you can feel."
Vella let them finish, placing three small stones on the plate before turning to Tessa.
"You brought the first request."
"The oven used to share its spare heat with the next two kitchens," Tessa said, taking the fitting from the sack, "I’d like that part back before somebody decides cold soup is a religious duty."
Hajin caught the older woman’s amused glance toward her husband.
"Who receives it?" Vella asked.
Tessa named the two kitchen keepers, pointing them out among the waiting residents before setting the fitting beside the first circle.
Both came forward to confirm their places, one holding a pot lid under her arm as though she had simply followed the missing warmth here.
"Does the whole kitchen receive the signal?" she asked.
"The fitting does," Vella said, "your hands don’t have to carry it."
The woman relaxed enough to put the lid down.
Vella touched the second circle, bringing up the offered connection between the three pieces.
"Spare oven heat, within the amount each kitchen accepts."
"No prayer bell," Tessa said.
"No prayer bell."
"No voice telling me the bread belongs to everyone except the person who got up to make it."
Rumi snorted from the other side of the bench, catching her tail before it swept through the flour spilling from Tessa’s sack.
Vella checked the open connection closely, a thin violet line passing along its edge while the three keepers watched.
Hajin leaned forward when she stopped at a rough join, his fingers resting on the bench instead of the plate.
"Something attached?"
"An old fastening scar," she said, lifting the line so he could see the empty place beneath it, "there’s nothing pulling through it."
She completed the inspection before reaching the third circle.
"This is where any one of you stops your own connection."
The keeper with the pot lid frowned.
"Do the other two have to agree?"
"No."
"Tessa gets cross when I let the soup cool."
"Because you leave it there all afternoon."
"She may stay cross," Vella said, "your fitting will still disconnect."
Hajin lowered his head, smiling into his hand while Tessa gave the plate a look that suggested it had already developed an attitude.
The three keepers placed their hands at their separate marks, each answering for the part that would reach her own kitchen.
Warmth stirred in the fitting on the bench.
Tessa held her palm above it, waiting until the two others had checked their pieces before allowing herself a satisfied breath.
"That’ll do."
The registry recorded the bakery circuit first, leaving its three separate exit marks visible beneath the working connection.
The keeper with the pot lid tried hers, lifting the small fitting as its warmth ebbed beneath her palm.
"Soup’s already hot enough," she said when Tessa looked over.
Tessa checked the remaining connection with the other woman, finding her own oven still sharing its spare heat along that accepted line.
"Fine, but put the lid on this time."
The departing keeper tucked it under her arm again, promising nothing as she carried her disconnected fitting toward the ordinary stairs.
Nari leaned closer to the third circle.
"I want to test a quick return."
Vella gave her an unused pair of warning marks, one for her and one for Rumi, holding the offered line clear while the sisters agreed to a simple tap signal.
Rumi touched her mark.
Nari’s ears shifted at the answering sensation, her finger already moving to the exit when Rumi tried a second tap.
Nothing reached her.
"Again."
Rumi tapped twice, then harder, the small clicking sounds making the brothers look over.
"You can stop bullying the stone," Nari said, "I’m out."
She chose to rejoin, the next tap reaching her through the accepted warning line before she disconnected a second time.
"That works."
The elder brother held out his hand for a closer look, the argument about his cupboard finally losing ground to a question about how the signal would feel during sleep.
Vella made him test it awake first.
Hajin watched his expression change from suspicion to irritation when his brother discovered the sharpest permitted setting.
"Once," the older man warned.
"I was checking."
"You checked three times."
Their agreement ended with a lower signal limit, both men approving it before the registry accepted the line.
Farther down the bench, a woman asked for a flood warning that would reach her while she was washing below the bells, drawing the route to her work with a wet fingertip.
Another resident wanted to know when his mother’s old injury became too painful for her to leave her room.
"Ask her what she wants to send," Vella said.
The mother sat beside him, pulling her shawl tighter.
"When I call for help, you can hear that," she told her son, "the rest of my morning is mine."
He opened his mouth, then looked at the three circles before moving his chair closer so she could see the offered mark.
Hajin found himself watching the small distance between their chairs.
There had been so many screaming commands in these walls that the scrape of an ordinary chair sounded almost indecently quiet.

He shared the working panel once the residents had seen it themselves, letting the Stream watch Nari’s demonstration again from the empty test marks.

Tessa checked the remaining warm fitting with the other keeper, holding her palm above it while Vella moved to the next request.
The younger brother stayed near Hajin after his own registration, looking from Vella toward the equipped Spirit Ring when its light caught the plate.
"Was hers made this way?"
Hajin felt the answer he wanted to give rise too quickly.
He stopped it behind his teeth.
"No."
Vella turned toward him.
The man glanced between them, his easy curiosity faltering.
"I only meant the bond."
"I know," Hajin said, "I can’t make that history fit these circles by saying we’re all right now."
Vella set down the stone she had been holding, the movement careful enough to make him look at her fingers.
She was tired, a slight tremor showing when she released the pressure of her grip.
"I was bound to a Spirit Ring," she said, "what kept me here and what hurt me are tangled together, I haven’t finished sorting them."
The younger brother looked down at his warning mark.
"And now?"
Vella glanced at Hajin, something private moving through her expression before she returned to the waiting man.
"Now I can want to stay beside him while still having questions about the thing that holds me."
Hajin wished he had a better answer than the ache that put in his chest.
"You can ask them," he said.
"You can bear hearing them."
"I’m learning."
She touched his wrist briefly, the coolness of her fingers settling him before she went back to the mother’s chosen help signal.
He stayed at the bench, accepting the uncomfortable space she had left open instead of filling it with a promise he could not yet make concrete.
By late afternoon, chalk dust covered the edges of the plate, the brothers helping move chairs while the remaining kitchen keeper left to check her warming soup.
Elina brought the protected child down the ordinary stairs for Vella’s evening check, the girl choosing a chair beside Juna where she could still see the way back to her room.
Cessy had kept to the side where she could see the underside of the registry, her burned wrist resting against her coat.
Hajin noticed her nose wrinkle.
"What is it?"
"He’ll call this an invitation."
The words pulled Vella’s attention from the offered flood mark.
"One Voice?"
Cessy nodded, stepping back from the bench rather than reaching beneath it.
"People choosing a connection will be close enough for him to lie about the rest."
A dark line appeared under the plate.
Hajin caught the nearest resident’s sleeve before the man could bend to inspect it, guiding him back as the line joined into a small black mark.
Something smelled like scorched string beneath a damp floor.
Then a note hummed through his back teeth, wrong enough to make him clench his jaw.
"Seam chord," Cessy said, her own mouth tightening, "don’t touch it."
Vella stopped the unfinished registration, checking the waiting template before letting anyone approach the plate again.
The black mark remained below it, separate from the offered flood line.
Hajin sent the warning to Sava, naming the smell, the sound and the exact place where it had appeared while the clerk called runners for every city gate.
Nari marked a clear space around the bench supports, keeping curious hands away as Ferra angled a lamp beneath the plate.
"Still there," Ferra said.
"Keep watching."
The mother with the shawl drew her son back beside her, keeping her own registered help mark in her hand.
Evening lamps were lit before the queue finally shortened, Vella inspecting each remaining offer while the uninvited mark waited beneath their work.
Hajin could smell bread from the returned kitchen keeper’s basket when the black line opened into four narrow shapes, each one turning toward a different part of the hall.
