All My Summons Become Divine Girls

Chapter 557: Counting The Living

The chain-holder pulled against Hajin’s right hand as Lucan stepped beside Cessy, its remaining links scraping toward the place their return marks had burned.

Hajin leaned into the low stone behind him, keeping the Chain taut while a fresh sting ran beneath the strap around his forearm.

The creature’s own chain dragged through the residue left by the broken bundle, its links catching at the lines still trembling between the three approaches.

Vella saw the nearest one turn toward Cessy’s bandage, her hand lifting before the thin edge could settle against the injured core beneath it.

Gold met the approaching line along the dressing, the sudden contact making Cessy draw a sharp breath beside her brother.

"A wound is not an emergency path."

The healer’s voice stayed low while she tightened the barrier, its edge following the torn route as it tried sliding around her fingers.

Another line reached toward Hajin’s burned palm, the movement making him raise his left hand from his knee with an involuntary jerk.

Vella crossed the few steps between them, keeping the first protection fixed close to Cessy while she brought her free palm beneath Hajin’s hand.

The approaching route curled against her gold, pressing into the space below his injured fingers until the light thickened around its exposed edge.

He could feel the cold at the bottom of the burn, a horrible searching sensation that made his stomach tighten against the stone behind him.

’Get that out of my hand.’

Vella drew the line away from the damaged skin, her thumb moving carefully beneath his palm while the gold followed its retreat.

At the passage mouth, a black fingertip pressed through the residue beside the doorway, its familiar obsidian surface catching the light above Ash’s blanket.

The Watcher’s free hand closed over it before the next finger found room, her other arm staying firmly across the boy’s shoulders.

Hajin recognized the shape against her grip, his right hand pulling so sharply at the Chain that the fifth fighter stumbled on its knees.

"You reached once," the Watcher said, pressing the black hand back against the narrow opening, "but you do not reach twice."

Ash tucked his face beneath her arm, the blanket corner slipping from Cessy’s fingers as she turned toward the pressure beside the door.

The obsidian knuckles pushed once against the Watcher’s palm, their weight bowing the little opening before Vella’s tightened route began drawing it closed.

The Watcher held until the fingertips disappeared beneath her hand, her shoulder shaking when the last dark edge contracted against the stone.

Hajin stared at the empty place for one hard breath, then dragged his attention back toward the three bodies still reaching across the square.

"Finish them."

Loccy moved first, taking hold of the slab lying across the designation-bearer’s approach while its moving number faced the protected passage.

The stone scraped beneath her hands, its broken underside catching on the paving before she shifted her feet and brought its weight clear.

Four Wings opened behind her as she lifted, the effort pulling her elbows close while the slab rose between her body and the markings.

The designation-bearer turned with it, its number drawing together across the front of its chest as a narrow exit opened beneath its heel.

Nari pressed her right palm against that exposed point, pinning the route before the retreating foot could carry the body through it.

The creature’s heel struck the stopped opening, its balance breaking just enough for Loccy to step inside the space it had failed to leave.

She brought the slab down across the number, the impact snapping the nearest strokes apart while stone dust burst around her forearms.

Hajin felt the blow through the paving beneath him, its dull force reaching his heels before the sound finished crossing the square.

The demon tried folding beneath the stone, a second exposed route opening beside the place where Nari had already stopped its first retreat.

She moved her anchor to that new edge as the first collapsed empty, catching the attempted escape while Loccy kept the slab against the body.

"Here," Nari called.

Loccy followed the fixed point with her weight, driving the stone through the shattered number toward the core caught beneath its broken markings.

The slab cracked down its middle as the core gave, its pieces falling to either side of the light breaking under Loccy’s hands.

She stayed bent over it until Nari released the stopped route, the last fragments settling beneath the two heavy halves of stone.

"That one is done," Loccy said.

Her voice came out on a breath she seemed reluctant to spend, both hands still resting on the broken slab as she looked toward the passage.

Hajin followed her glance to the old scratched designation, finding the child’s uneven charcoal strokes still dark across the damaged record.

The pale fighter lunged while his eyes were there, its red threads snapping tight against the frost Didi had kept between them.

She gave ground by half a step, her heel scraping until Juna caught the exposed direction beneath the creature’s turning ribs.

"Keep that one open."

Didi pressed her frost along the thread Juna indicated, its cold edge carrying the hostile frequency out from beneath the pale ribs.

The fighter twisted toward her hand, its nearest arm coming across the frost while Juna moved inside the turn with her knife held close.

Hajin saw the thread brighten where Didi had caught it, the small exposed length standing clear of the ribs for the space of one breath.

Juna’s solar current settled along the knife before she cut, the precise edge entering the frequency Didi had already drawn into view.

The thread snapped under the blade, its severed ends whipping apart while the pale creature’s core flashed through the opening beneath its ribs.

Juna followed the cut through that exposed gap, keeping the knife close to the line until the core broke against the solar edge.

The body folded around her blade as she pulled it free, Didi’s frost taking the last red thread before it could curl toward the passage.

Hajin let out the breath he had been holding, hearing Didi do the same while Juna stepped clear of the collapsing pale ribs.

The fifth fighter remained on its knees against his Chain, its own links dragging the remnants of the bundle toward the two dead bodies beside it.

Cessy left the doorway with Lucan close behind, both stopping at the edge of the held line where the residue still clung to its chain.

Hajin looked from their freshly burned marks to the tightening join, his injured fingers slipping against a link before he caught it again.

"Can you cut that away?"

Cessy crouched near the exposed residue, her wrist held carefully above the chain while Lucan watched the point where it divided beneath the fighter’s grip.

"Hold it still."

Hajin braced his heels against the paving, pulling the Chain toward his hip until the fifth creature’s arms stopped moving between the links.

The strain made his right shoulder burn, his next breath breaking halfway through while Vella kept the protection close to his other hand.

Lucan caught the first exposed return line in his own mana, drawing it clear of the tangle while Cessy followed its edge toward the creature’s fingers.

She paused beside the residue that still faced the protected room, her lips moving around words Hajin nearly lost beneath the scraping chain.

"For the room."

Her hand cut through that strand as Lucan severed the paired return beside it, the two ends falling away from the fifth fighter’s chain.

The trapped creature jerked backward when the support vanished, its chest opening beneath the last pull it had been taking from the bundle.

Hajin tightened his own Chain through the exposed gap, the leading links closing around the core now caught between its arms.

He pulled until the links met, the impact running through his wrist as the committed core cracked inside their tightening circle.

The creature’s hands fell apart from its chain, its body collapsing forward across the stone while the last fragments broke between Hajin’s links.

He held the grip a moment longer, waiting until nothing pulled back before he let the Chain settle heavily against the paving.

The quiet arrived badly, leaving him listening for the next scrape while his fingers stayed closed around a weapon that no longer needed his strength.

"Five," Nari said.

Rumi stood beside her with the first core’s dust wrapped in torn cloth, her gaze moving across the places where each fighter had fallen.

Aria’s reconciliation appeared beside the last broken approach, Hajin turning the fields into the Stream’s view while he eased his fingers apart.

[ Hostile core experience reconciled: 60,000,000 ]

[ Hajin current experience: 510,000,000 / 1,000,000,000 ]

"Sixty million reconciled," Aria read, "current host experience, five hundred and ten million."

A separate notice opened beneath the completed pool, its quiet light bringing Hajin’s attention inward for an instant before the ache in his arm pulled him back.

[ Fragment recovery gained: 2.00% ]

[ Fragment recovery: 47.00% ]

Didi read the final percentage beside him, her hand resting over the wrist that had held the royal recall while she looked toward the closed scar.

[ Royal Collector true body: Survives below ]

The next field stayed above the broken square, its words drawing a small, hard movement through her jaw before she lowered her eyes toward Hajin.

"Still below."

"Yes."

She sat on the nearest clear stone, her tired arm settling across her knees while Juna cleaned the thread-cutting knife with a folded cloth.

[ irontea: all five of the ones that crossed are gone ]

[ morning_static: somebody make him put the chain down ]

Hajin looked at his right hand, discovering that he was still carrying the grip even after the links had settled across the ground.

He stored the Chain with a deliberate exhale, the sudden absence of its weight leaving his forearm shaking harder than it had while he held it.

Vella caught his wrist before it dropped against his knee, her gold staying close as she guided the hand into a position he could bear.

"Then we survive the part after the victory," he said.

"Start by staying there," she answered.

Across the square, Loccy lowered herself onto one half of the shattered slab, her elbows resting on her knees while she took a long breath.

Nari crouched beside the last pinned point, checking its empty edge before she rubbed chalk from the side of her hand.

Ferra came through the wreckage with the watch slate, asking the corridor guards for names while the household was still finding places to sit.

The ordinary watch took the approaches she marked, their first positions set before anyone tried turning the relief into a cheer.

Hajin checked the slate when she brought it near, seeing the protected turn covered along with the square’s five damaged entries.

"Sixty million," Ferra murmured as her eyes passed the still-open reconciliation, "and all this stone to put back."

"One problem at a time."

She gave him a tired look before taking the slate back toward the guards, her hammer hanging low beside the hand that had signed the asylum page.

Vella closed the last replacement route near his palm, drawing its two edges together with the same careful movement she used to finish a dressing.

The cold searching sensation finally left the burn, making him sag against the stone so suddenly that she looked up at his face.

"Gone," he told her.

She nodded once before checking the skin, her fingers gentle where the Chain’s strain had left his other hand shaking beside it.

With the approaches under watch, Hajin brought the field lot out of inventory onto a cleared stretch of stone beside the healer.

Twenty staple-food packs lay with the ten dressings and ten wash kits, their plain wrappers looking strangely clean against the dust around them.

Vella took the dressings for the injured while the relief helpers gathered the food packs for Tessa’s kitchen, carrying the whole stack away between them.

The wash kits went with the household and the local relief attendants, one opened beside Hajin while the others moved toward the people waiting beyond the damaged square.

He watched clean water reach a cloth, the simple movement holding his attention while Vella began washing the grit from the edge of his palm.

The sting made him pull back before he could stop himself, her waiting hand keeping his wrist steady until he brought it forward again.

"I know," she said.

"I wasn’t going to complain."

"Your hand was."

He let her work, watching Juna sheath the cleaned knife before she came to sit where her shoulder could rest against his.

Cessy and Lucan stood together near the asylum page, her scar and his burned fingers being checked in turn while the watchers held the entries around them.

Rumi opened her wrist wrap enough to show the road burn, Nari bringing her own hand beside it with a reluctant glance toward Vella.

The healer looked from their palms to Didi’s strained arm, then toward Eirwen and the Watcher, gathering the injuries before the tired smiles could hide them.

Hajin stayed against Juna’s shoulder while ordinary brooms began scraping through the square, the sound moving past five dead approaches toward the doorway still standing behind them.
