All My Summons Become Divine Girls
Chapter 556: Paperwork With Claws
Lucan kept his hand inside his coat after Cessy took the blanket corner, his fingers resting against the folded report he had carried through the crossing.
The paper had softened along its oldest crease, giving beneath his thumb in the same place every time he checked that it was still there.
Cessy watched him from beside the doorway, her burned wrist turned away from the blanket while Ash held the rest against his chest.
He had expected her to say something, the absence of that familiar little push leaving him alone with the paper beneath his hand.
’You could have made this easier.’
He knew she would have objected to that thought, probably with a remark sharp enough to make him forget how closely he was watching her scar.
The chain-holder scraped across the square behind him, Hajin’s Chain dragging its body sideways when it tried pulling the remaining approaches toward the passage.
Lucan turned toward the sound, seeing the summoner’s right arm shake against the support while Juna kept the held line clear beside him.
Three fighters remained between the scars, their separate movements catching at the residue of the bundle that had tried taking both siblings together.
He drew the report from his coat, the paper catching briefly against the lining before he eased it free with the back of his fingers.
The false lines inside it were his, written carefully enough that he could remember each place where the truthful wording had nearly returned.
He had protected Cessy with them, letting the record show something he could defend while leaving the thing that mattered outside its neat boundaries.
Hajin looked from the paper to his face, his grip tightening around the Chain as another scrape carried across the stone.
"Another report?"
"The one I changed."
Cessy’s hand stopped moving against the blanket corner, the small pause reaching Lucan before he looked back toward his sister.
She had known what he did, but hearing it named here made her turn the burned wrist farther beneath her sleeve.
"You don’t have to follow me," she said.
"I know."
"Lucan."
He looked at her then, finding the impatience he had wanted a moment earlier and discovering that it made the choice no easier.
"I chose Cessy, not Hajin’s household," he said, keeping his eyes on her before turning toward the others, "I am not asking to become one of his people."
Hajin’s expression changed around the mouth, the movement too tired to become the amused answer Lucan had been expecting from him.
"Good, because I hadn’t put that in the offer."
Lucan glanced toward Juna, finding her attention fixed on the paper rather than the hand he kept close to the weapon beneath his coat.
The report’s return authorization sat along its inner fold, its familiar lines pressing beneath his thumb while he opened the sheet far enough to expose them.
Vella stepped into view beside Cessy, looking from the exposed seal toward the place Lucan had been guarding with his other hand.
"Your core stays here?"
"It already is here."
"Then show me the authorization."
He held the fold still for her, letting the healer follow the returning line before he brought his own mana against its first turn.
A small heat gathered beneath his thumb, the report stiffening around the seal while the words he had falsified began to curl inward.
Lucan tore one empty corner free before the heat reached it, catching the little piece against his palm as the authorization darkened.
Cessy’s gaze followed that corner, her mouth tightening when the rest of the sheet began to burn through the crease he had kept touching.
He held the report until the returning lines broke, the heat biting his fingertips hard enough that he had to force them to remain open.
The last part fell toward the paving in brittle pieces, its ash scattering below his hand while the blank corner stayed pressed against his palm.
[ Foreign recovery authority: Severed ]
[ Return route: Irrecoverable ]
Hajin gave the two fields a visible place beside Cessy’s earlier result, the matching notices hanging above the ordinary stone where the ashes settled.
Lucan stared at them until the heat in his fingers became sharper than the loss of the road, then folded the surviving corner once.
"A receipt?" Cessy asked.
"Enough paper to remember what I burned."
"You would keep a receipt for that."
Her voice had found its familiar shape again, the sound easing something beneath his ribs before the chain-holder dragged another link across the square.
Lucan tried slipping the corner into his coat, stopping when the lining caught against the fingertips he had kept too long above the burning seal.
Cessy caught the paper before it fell, using her free hand to place it deeper in the pocket while he held the opening apart.
"You could have let go sooner," she murmured.
"You didn’t."
Her glance dropped toward her own scar, the answer leaving her quiet while his hand rested awkwardly against the edge of the coat.
He could still feel the paper’s warmth through the lining, its little square settling against his chest as she drew her fingers clear of the pocket.
Juna shifted toward the noise, checking the remaining fighters before she turned back with one hand resting near her weapon.
"Guarded asylum," she said, "you keep your bodies, your choices, and your weapons, with the same dangerous-foreigner limits we’ve been holding here."
Lucan looked at her hand beside the weapon, then toward the marked line separating him from the approaches that had just tried to take him.
"And the price?"
"No oath," Hajin answered.
"That wasn’t the only kind of price I meant."
"No private routes," Juna continued, "you don’t open a way around the watch, and neither of you approaches a child without a witness."
The Watcher lifted her eyes toward Lucan at the last condition, her arm staying across Ash while he watched the ashes near Lucan’s feet.
Lucan let the warning rest between them, remembering the Gate he had helped seed long before he needed a guarded line to stand behind.
"You know what I’ve done."
"The Gate doesn’t turn into a misunderstanding because you’re standing here," Hajin said.
The answer was blunt enough to make Lucan glance at Cessy, finding her gaze steady on the summoner while her fingers kept the blanket corner carefully clear of the burn.
"Then don’t call this trust."
"I called it asylum."
Lucan looked down at the pocket holding his report corner, the paper’s little weight seeming absurdly small beside the words they were deciding to put around him.
He could hear his own breathing beneath the chain’s drag, a shallow sound made awkward by the ache where his core had settled into its only body.
’You can live with being watched.’
Sava brought a clean sheet to the low stone beside Hajin, steadying it with her knee while she wrote the terms in Quiet Ink.
Her hand paused beneath the first line, leaving enough room for the conditions that Juna had spoken while Lucan watched the shape of the agreement appear.
"Bodies remain yours," Sava read, "choices remain yours, weapons remain yours under the guarded-asylum conditions."
Lucan followed each word until his gaze reached the next line, the absence of any oath making him search the space below it twice.
"No oath," he repeated.
Sava underlined the clause with one steady stroke, her pen stopping cleanly before she continued to the restrictions Juna had named.
"No private routes, no contact with a child without a witness."
"I heard that condition," the Watcher said.
"So did I," Juna answered, keeping her gaze on Lucan until he nodded.
He read the finished page himself, moving from bodies to choices to weapons before resting his fingertip beside the underlined clause.
"The weapons remain with us even while we’re under watch?"
"While you obey the limits," Juna said, "if you use one on someone under our protection, we’ll have a different conversation."
"A short one," Hajin added.
Lucan looked toward the Chain in his right hand, its taut links scraping another pale mark into the paving as the fifth fighter tried shifting its weight.
"I had gathered that."
Ferra came from the nearby fixture with her hammer held low, placing its marked face against the asylum margin after Sava moved the sheet onto firmer stone.
The short tap left her maker’s sign beside the written conditions, its ordinary sound making Lucan look up from the page in surprise.
"You sign with that?"
"People tend to recognize it."
Sava took the marked sheet back, making the Quiet Ink copy before handing it to the corridor watch for filing behind the protected turn.
The original stayed where both siblings could read it, Hajin moving one final field into view beside their names as the ink settled.
[ Household loyalty: Not established ]
Lucan watched the honest line remain there, his hand pressing slowly against the pocket where Cessy had placed the corner kept from his report.
"Hospitality sounds suspiciously like paperwork with claws."
Cessy laughed once before the movement pulled at her side, the pain interrupting her sharply enough that Lucan moved toward her before he thought about it.
She caught his wrist with her unburned hand, holding him there while the last trace of the laugh stayed at the corner of her mouth.
"That is the first useful report you’ve given tonight."
He looked at her fingers around his wrist, the familiar pressure making the vanished road feel farther away than the scar beneath her sleeve.
Hajin shifted the Chain again, drawing the chain-holder’s body across the stone behind them while Didi kept the pale fighter’s red thread caught in frost.
Juna moved back toward the held line, leaving the asylum page beside the place where Lucan had stopped trying to find a hidden oath.
He stepped beside Cessy with the report corner resting inside his coat, both of them facing the three remaining fighters from inside the guarded square.
