All My Summons Become Divine Girls

Chapter 538: Burning Brand

  • Next Chapter

The city spent the day after the Split Custodian’s death learning what victory felt like, which turned out to be bread, bells, plus an alarming quantity of crying in public.

The engine’s three hearts, unguarded for the first time in recorded memory, steadied by a measurable degree overnight. The wardens read the charts three times before believing them, then posted the numbers in the square.

Citizens stood before the posting, refusing to walk away first, guarding good news like a fire.

Eighteen skies remained, plus for one evening, nobody counted them.

The not-counting was itself a small act of civic courage in a city of habitual sky-checkers, plus the whole evening glowed faintly warm for it.

"The expedition’s camp, meanwhile, ran on the same quiet fuel as the city."

Ferra oiled her wedges plus alphabetized her whole charcoal collection, while the twins argued about bridge credit, historic plus ongoing.

Juna updated the ledger by lamplight, entering the battle in the terms book carefully as scripture.

The demon child went to bed early, which Elina noted without concern, because victories are exhausting plus children sleep where adults celebrate.

The camp’s night watch doubled itself out of habit rather than any threat assessment.

It was a courtesy of the siege weeks, plus it would prove, by morning, the best decision anyone made that day.

The suspended ownership scar woke her at the midnight hour.

Elina’s scream arrived half a second after the light did, plus the camp’s response time was the kind of thing a month of sieges buys.

Vella reached the room first, with her gold already out. Hajin arrived second, four Rings open before his boots stopped moving, plus the room they entered was lit from below.

The demon child stood on her bed, both hands pressed over her left forearm, plus through her fingers burned the suspended ownership scar.

It had been quiet for the entire journey, a sealed line of old claim-law inked into her blood before anyone now living had signed it. Bloodline Sanctuary had sheltered the bloodline itself since the palace arc, plus the shelter held now, the Sanctuary’s pulse visible under her skin, fighting.

The scar burned through the shelter anyway, because it was not attacking the bloodline. It was executing its own extremely old paperwork, on schedule.

[ Bloodline Sanctuary: Active, Resisting ]

[ Suspended Ownership Mark: Igniting ]

[ Mark Classification: Audit Seal, Royal Collector Authority ]

"She is not being harmed," Aria reported, reading the collision at speed.

"The Sanctuary is holding her soundly, plus the mark is writing rather than wounding. It is inscribing itself somewhere else, using her as the pen."

The somewhere else turned out to be beneath the bed.

The seal’s light poured off her forearm like water off a writer’s nib, plus where it struck the stone floor it moved, deliberate as handwriting.

It formed a circular brand of interlocking claim-glyphs deep in the rock, while the stone smoked without burning.

The glyphwork was beautiful, archaic, plus entirely without any mercy in it.

[ Audit Seal Inscription: In Progress ]

[ Substrate: Foundation Stone ]

[ Inscription Authority: Royal Collector, Underworld Registry ]

"Stop it," Elina said, to the room, to no one, to the world in general. "She is a child, plus she signed nothing."

"Nobody signed anything," Hajin said, watching the glyphs turn in the stone.

"That is what an audit is. It writes on a person entirely without asking them first."

The inscription was completing itself toward the seal’s outer ring.

A completed Royal audit seal, the Watcher’s archive said in four languages, was a summons, a lien, plus a warrant combined in one mark.

What it would summon, once finished, was already arriving regardless.

Didi came through the doorway carrying an entire season of winter.

Her five Shards opened on the room’s threshold, plus cold rolled in ahead of her like a proclamation.

She did not ask permission, because the demon child’s blood plus the Crown’s old claim-law shared a history, plus the Crown’s answer to that history walked in with her.

"Brand, freeze plus hold," she said, in the formal register of a royal writ, plus laid her frost over the half-written seal.

The glyphwork fought her as the engine’s transfer lattice had fought, law against law.

Her Sovereign cold held the unfinished ring by ruling the seal’s jurisdiction foreign to the borrowed bedrock.

It was the same ruling her frost had laid against the compulsory command at the bakery, plus it landed the same way.

The inscription stopped three glyphs short of completion, locked in ice that smoked black at the edges, a warrant arrested mid-signature.

[ Audit Seal Inscription: Frozen ]

[ Completion: 3 Glyphs Remaining ]

[ Frozen By: Sovereign Brand, Didi ]

[ Freeze Duration: Hours, Not Days ]

"Hours," Didi said, reading her own panel with clinical flatness.

"The Collector’s authority is older than my Shard plus better funded. I can hold the seal unfinished through the night, plus only through the night."

The demon child had not made a sound through any of it. She stood on the bed with her hands pressed over the burning scar, watching the frozen seal through her hood’s shadow.

When she finally spoke, it was to Hajin, plus it was operational.

"It found me," she said.

"The quiet part of the dark that reads followed the smell the old mark makes, the way water follows the road downhill."

Hajin stood over the frozen brand, plus the phrase struck a chord older than this city.

Boundary scent, the old law ran, is produced by a damaged core, plus Royal Collectors follow it.

He had heard the law in Cessy’s own voice an arc ago, in a country that existed on no map he trusted.

Aria had archived the frequency of the crossing that taught them the lesson.

"Aria," he said next. "Open the Arc 9 records, the Collector crossing we measured at the ruined court road."

Aria opened the old file beside the live seal, laid frequency against frequency, plus the two readings kissed.

[ Seal Frequency: Matched ]

[ Archive Source: Arc 9, Royal Collector Crossing Record ]

[ Identity Confirmation: Same Authority ]

[ Crossing Status: Active, Inbound ]

"It is the same Collector," Aria said quietly.

"It hunts boundary scent across jurisdictions, it has crossed into this country, it is following the old claim downhill, plus the seal is its landing mark."

The whole room absorbed that particular sentence in complete silence.

Somewhere south of the city, on a road the wardens had never mapped, something carrying a ledger plus a warrant walked toward the frozen signature.

It walked entirely unhurried, because audits, by their nature, are never late.

"It is not coming for the city," Hajin said, working the geometry of the scent. "It is coming for her, for the suspended claim, plus for everything the Arc 9 interference attached to it."

"Then it finds us instead," Juna said, from the doorway, ledger under her arm, four districts of victory still on her hands.

"Hours," Didi repeated, frost holding, eyes on the three unfinished glyphs.

"The seal completes at dawn or before, plus when it completes, its owner arrives through it. We have one night to decide what stands on this floor when the ink dries."

The camp spent the rest of that night around one bed, one frozen warrant, plus one quiet girl.

At the worst hour, she held her burned forearm out to Hajin, showing him the scar as one shows a map.

"The dark part is done reading," she said to him. "Now it comes to collect."

Beneath the seam, forty miles of stone away, something red-fingered stopped writing, reviewed its half-finished signature with professional regret, plus began walking.
