The three nights the twins had requested became the new rhythm of the compound.

Yara and Nyra moved through the shared spaces with the original circle as if the arrangement had always existed. Elizabeth set the boundaries once, clearly, on the morning after the first night. No competition for position. No private alliances that undercut the group. No residual games of any kind. The twins accepted the terms without argument and kept them. What happened after that was frequent, intense, and treated as ordinary rather than exceptional.

Mornings usually began with tangled bodies and the clean ache of the previous night. Sometimes I woke with Yara's mouth already on me while Nyra kissed Elizabeth beside us. Sometimes Vale claimed the first hour with the same direct hunger she brought to the training terraces. Lydia and Seraphina took their turns without needing to announce them. Feng Lan's newly light presence fitted into the pattern as if the collected claim had never existed. The twins learned the preferences of each woman quickly and adjusted without being told. By the third morning the six original members and the two attendants moved around one another with the easy physical familiarity of people who had stopped counting whose hand belonged to whom.

The days belonged to the city.

Feng Lan continued her work in the formation halls and returned each evening with new sketches of the arrays that kept the Bone City alive. Vale's reputation on the combat terraces hardened into something approaching legend among the lower disciples. Elizabeth and Seraphina made steady progress through the libraries, cross-referencing the drifting continents and the independent powers that had survived outside clan control. I continued the morning sessions with Lady Sable. The combat work grew sharper. The private measurement that followed each session remained part of the terms neither of us needed to renegotiate.

On the fourth day after the twins began staying overnight, Lady Sable arrived at the compound without warning and requested my presence in the lower foundation halls. Elizabeth accompanied me. The twins followed at a respectful distance until Lady Sable gestured them forward as well.

The foundation halls sat deep beneath the central towers, where the white bone of the city met the dark structures that anchored it to the sea. The air was colder and heavier. Living constructs stood motionless along the walls, larger than the ones that patrolled the streets. At the far end of the main chamber a circular platform of black glass and bone held a sealed gate that looked nothing like the residual rifts we had closed in the north. The surface was smooth, marked with nested lines that pulsed with a slow, steady light.

"This gate leads to the Mirror Expanse," Lady Sable said. "The records claim it has been sealed since before the Crimson Veil established itself here. Every attempt to open it with conventional methods has failed. The last serious effort cost us three senior formation masters and a section of the lower harbour."

Feng Lan stepped closer, eyes tracing the nested lines.

"These principles match the oldest arrays I have been studying. Self-reinforcing. Designed to recognise a specific quality of cursed energy and reject everything else."

Lady Sable nodded.

"The quality required is a pure Cursed Nebula Physique at a sufficient stage of refinement. Residual contamination of any kind has always caused the gate to respond with lethal force. You are the first person to stand in this city carrying that physique without residual interference. I have been waiting to see whether the gate would recognise you."

Elizabeth's voice was calm.

"And if it does not?"

"Then we learn the records were incomplete and we lose nothing but time. If it does, the Mirror Expanse opens. That region contains resources, knowledge, and dangers the great clans have never been able to reach. The Crimson Veil intends to be the first organised power to map it properly."

She looked at me.

"I am asking you to attempt the opening. The preparation will take three days of joint cultivation to align your physique with the gate's requirements. Yara and Nyra will serve as living conduits. I will direct the process. The work is technical and physical in equal measure. Your original circle is welcome to observe or participate as they choose, provided they do not disrupt the alignment."

I studied the sealed surface. The slow pulse of light under the nested lines matched the clean rhythm of the Cursed Nebula Physique in a way that felt deliberate rather than coincidental. The residual chapter of our lives had ended on a frozen lake. This was something the wider world had kept closed until a physique like mine stood in front of it without foreign claims attached.

"I will do it," I said.

Elizabeth did not object. The rest of the circle accepted the decision with the same practical silence they had given the twins' request to stay.

The preparation began that evening.

Lady Sable had a private cultivation chamber prepared adjacent to the foundation halls. The space was circular, lined with the same black glass as the arena, and empty of everything except a wide central platform and the tools required for deep alignment work. Yara and Nyra entered first and stripped without being told, taking positions on either side of the platform. Lady Sable followed, crimson robes set aside, her body already carrying the focused calm she brought to every form of measurement.

I stepped onto the platform. The twins placed their hands on my back and chest, channels open. Lady Sable faced me and began the circulation of her own power through theirs, creating a living bridge between my physique and the deeper structures of the city. The contact was precise and intimate at the same time. Energy moved through skin and breath and the places where our bodies pressed together. When the technical alignment required deeper connection she took me into her without breaking the flow of instruction, using the physical joining to stabilise the currents that the twins channelled. Yara and Nyra adjusted around us, mouths and hands and bodies maintaining the circuit whenever the pressure threatened to spike.

The sessions lasted hours.

Each one ended only when the alignment had advanced another measurable step. Sometimes the ending was clean and controlled. Sometimes the final stabilisation required Lady Sable to ride the climax out of me while the twins held the conduits open, their own release following as part of the same circuit. Elizabeth observed the first full session from the edge of the chamber, arms folded, expression unreadable. On the second day she participated directly for a time, adding her own cultivated control to the bridge when the currents grew unstable. Vale, Seraphina, Lydia and Feng Lan took turns at the observation positions, learning the process even while the physical work continued.

By the end of the second day the nested lines on the sealed gate had begun to pulse in clearer rhythm with the Cursed Nebula Physique. Lady Sable ended the session with me still inside her, the twins pressed close on either side, and the measured satisfaction of someone whose long calculation was finally producing results.

"One more day," she said, breath steadying. "Tomorrow we complete the alignment. The morning after that, we open the gate."

She did not leave the chamber immediately. Neither did the twins. The technical work was finished for the night, but the physical current that had been built to serve it still needed a place to settle. What followed was less structured than the cultivation itself and no less thorough. Elizabeth joined again near the end, and for a time the original centre of the circle and the new pieces Lady Sable had introduced moved together without friction or hierarchy beyond the simple fact of who reached for whom.

When we finally returned to the compound the city was deep in its night cycle. The sealed gate under the foundation halls continued its slow, steady pulse. Three days of preparation were nearly complete. The Mirror Expanse waited on the other side of a door that had remained closed for longer than the Crimson Veil had existed.

And the circle that would step through it had already begun to change shape around the physique that the gate had been waiting for.
