Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: Inflicting Depression Gives me Points
Chapter 150: A Duelist with Underworld-Level Annoyance Skills
"Hummmm!!"
As Rowan finished speaking, a wave of dark red energy flared to life on his newly activated Continuous Trap, Necrovalley Temple.
Instantly, Gravekeeper's Assailant, already positioned behind his Gravekeeper's Guard with her curved blade raised for the strike, found her attack ticking down by 500 under that suppressing energy, dropping to 1500.
As if her movements had suddenly slowed, Gravekeeper's Guard reacted in the blink of an eye, spinning around and raising its spear, knocking the curved blade aside and sending the assassin stumbling backward.
Since she'd originally been positioned behind him for the backstab, the knockback sent her tumbling straight toward Rowan, who quickly reached out and caught her before she fell.
"Uh... you okay?" Rowan said, looking a little awkward as he greeted her.
After all, this Gravekeeper assassin had tried to warn him and Alexis off multiple times earlier, and now here she was, knocked flying by his own Gravekeeper's Guard and landing right in his arms.
It was a bit of an awkward moment, to say the least.
Gravekeeper's Assailant gave a small nod, then dissolved back into shadow, returning instantly to the elder's field.
Alexis, meanwhile, finally placed the assassin for certain: she was indeed the same woman who'd tried to warn her and Rowan to leave earlier.
This boy is honestly infuriating enough to make your teeth grind, the elder thought, his face dark as coal as he stared at Rowan.
With Gravekeeper's Assailant knocked back to his own field by Rowan's Gravekeeper's Guard, his Life Points, already down some, dropped another 100, falling to 3500 LP.
But that measly 100-point loss was nothing compared to what really darkened his mood: the effect of Rowan's Continuous Trap, Necrovalley Temple.
The boy was using his own Field Spell and his own monsters as the activation condition, just to weaken his monsters' attack, and freeloading off his Necrovalley's boost to Gravekeeper monsters while he was at it!
Just thinking about that shameless combo made the elder's fist clench involuntarily.
His urge to step onto the field himself and personally strike down this boy, who looked utterly harmless but somehow kept sending his blood pressure through the roof, grew stronger by the second.
[Ding. Gravekeeper's Chief's Emotion Points +800!]
Unfortunately, he'd already used his Normal Summon this turn, so he couldn't summon again.
All he could do was keep attacking. But looking at his other monster, Gravekeeper's Spearman, also weakened by 500 down to 1500 attack, the elder quickly abandoned that idea.
If the other set monster on Rowan's field turned out to be another Gravekeeper's Guard, its defense, boosted all the way to 2400 by Necrovalley, would be completely unassailable for his Spearman.
"Since Gravekeeper's Spearman hasn't attacked this turn, I'll switch it to Defense Position during the End Phase, entering Main Phase 2."
As the elder spoke, Gravekeeper's Spearman crouched down low, spear in hand, shifting into a defensive stance as a horizontal card silhouette formed beneath it.
"Turn end."
"Not attacking anymore, huh?" Rowan clicked his tongue, sounding almost disappointed, muttering under his breath.
He'd been hoping the old Gravekeeper gentleman would run into his other set monster too, so he could spring the surprise he had waiting.
Hearing Rowan's muttering, the elder's face darkened even further, while Alexis and the others could only rub their temples in exasperation.
This guy's ability to get under someone's skin was honestly Underworld-tier all on its own.
"My turn, draw!"
After a brief moment of disappointment, Rowan quickly drew from his deck, and a pleased grin spread across his face as he raised a hand.
"Since you won't come attack me, old Gravekeeper gentleman, I'll just reveal the mystery myself. Flip Summon, Gravekeeper's Spy!"
As he spoke, the horizontal card silhouette flipped over, a faint glow rising up and taking shape as an ordinary-looking female scout in black robes, tan-skinned, crouched low in a defensive stance on Rowan's field.
[Gravekeeper's Spy] [Level: 4] [Attribute: DARK] [ATK: 1200] [DEF: 2000]
"Gravekeeper's Spy?!"
The elder's face flashed with shock, along with a distinct sense of foreboding.
Jaden and Syrus looked over at Rowan, curious, clearly having no idea what the card's effect even did.
It hadn't shown up at all in their own earlier duel against the elder.
"You should already know her effect, old Gravekeeper gentleman. This card's Flip Effect lets me Special Summon one Gravekeeper monster with 1500 or less attack from my deck."
Rowan's grin turned positively sunny as he pulled a card from his deck to show the elder.
"And the one I'm choosing to Special Summon is Gravekeeper's Cannonholder!"
"Hah!!"
A faint glow rose up, and a figure took shape, somewhat similar to the Spearman in appearance but shouldering an ancient magical cannon barrel instead of a spear, dressed in the same black robes.
It crouched low in a defensive stance, materializing atop a massive card silhouette on Rowan's field.
"Gravekeeper's... Cannonholder?"
The elder's face twisted with shock and disbelief. Even Gravekeeper's Assailant and the rest of the clan looked utterly baffled.
Did their clan even have a position like that? Why didn't any of them know about it?
But even setting that question aside, just looking at Rowan's suspiciously radiant grin, and the way Gravekeeper's Cannonholder had immediately trained its magical cannon barrel in his direction the moment it appeared, the elder felt a deeply ominous sense of dread welling up inside him.
