Wrong Flirt, Right Trouble: His Uncle Pulls Me Close
Chapter 536: A Gathering of Top Big Shots
Ivy Sherwood said, "I did this to myself. Thank you for your concern, Mr. Hawthorne, but please don’t come here just to stir up trouble."
Ivy Sherwood knew Elijah Hawthorne’s temper. His showing up probably meant he was here to cause a scene.
"You’re not still trying to defend that Quentin Blackwood, are you? It’s been so long. You can’t possibly still not see what kind of man he is, can you?" In Elijah Hawthorne’s eyes, Quentin Blackwood was no good, incompetent, and certainly no match for him.
Ivy Sherwood said, "My injury this time had nothing to do with him. It was just me being careless and my enemies being too formidable. I’ve told you before, he has his own business to attend to. He can’t always be by my side. Even you couldn’t stay by someone’s side forever, right?"
"You haven’t even given me a chance. How would you know I can’t?"
"Huh?" Ivy Sherwood didn’t know how to respond to that.
’Elijah Hawthorne must just be saying that, right? He’s a man who has everything. How could he possibly stop for any woman?’
"If you truly love someone, you’ll definitely protect her," Elijah Hawthorne said.
Ivy Sherwood said, "Accidents happen every day in this world, most of which are unavoidable. Even you couldn’t be with someone all the time. For example, tripping and falling when you go out, a flowerpot falling from upstairs, or getting into a car accident. None of these things can be predicted."
"But this wasn’t an accident. This was deliberate. Quentin Blackwood couldn’t even intervene in something like this, so what right does he have to say he’ll protect you?"
Ivy Sherwood poured Elijah Hawthorne a glass of water. "Mr. Hawthorne, please calm down."
’Although, she had no idea why Elijah Hawthorne was so angry. This incident shouldn’t have much to do with him, right?’
’And he even rushed here from so far away...’
"What are you keeping a man like that around for? You should dump him and be with me." Elijah Hawthorne downed the glass of water in one gulp.
Just then, however, the hospital room door opened, and Quentin Blackwood walked in from outside.
"Mr. Hawthorne, you’re the same as ever, always trying to poach what isn’t yours. But some things will never be yours, no matter how hard you try to take them."
Ivy Sherwood: "..."
With two titans at the top of the food chain in her hospital room, the pressure on Ivy Sherwood was immense.
She hadn’t expected Quentin Blackwood to return at this exact moment and run right into Elijah Hawthorne.
These two arch-rivals already couldn’t stand the sight of each other and had short fuses. Now, meeting as love rivals, they looked ready to tear each other apart.
"Wasn’t I telling the truth? How many times has she been in danger because of you?"
Elijah Hawthorne retorted, "Don’t think some romantic fireworks display is enough. If that’s what she likes, I can do that too. I’ll buy you all the fireworks in the world. It’s not like I have less money than him."
Ivy Sherwood: "..."
’See? I knew Elijah Hawthorne was just here to make a scene.’
Quentin Blackwood said, "I admit I didn’t do well enough this time, but there’s no need for you to be making snide remarks, Mr. Hawthorne. It’s not like you could necessarily do any better."
"How do you know I can’t do better than you? Why don’t you get lost and let me have a try?" Elijah Hawthorne never missed an opportunity to poach.
’Why should Quentin Blackwood get all the first chances in the world, only to not cherish them properly?’
"That’s impossible!"
"How do you know it’s impossible? I’ve just had less contact with her. Starting today, I’ll be in Lustre too. Maybe once she sees how good I am, you won’t stand a chance." Elijah Hawthorne felt that if he got serious, it was anyone’s game.
Over on the side, Ivy Sherwood wondered if she should just bow out and let these two bickering rivals be together.
She didn’t think Elijah Hawthorne truly had feelings for her. He was either just bored or so used to competing with Quentin Blackwood that he wanted to snatch away anything that belonged to him.
’Just like before, he probably just sees me as another project.’
"Stop fighting, both of you," Ivy Sherwood interrupted, looking at Elijah Hawthorne. "Mr. Hawthorne, I don’t want you to waste your time on me. You should go do what you need to do, and Quentin Blackwood will do the same."
"I know what I’m doing," Elijah Hawthorne said.
Quentin Blackwood added, "Elijah Hawthorne, she couldn’t have been more direct. Don’t you understand?"
Just then, the door was knocked on again, and Xavier Mercer appeared at the entrance.
"Ivy."
"Brother! You rushed over here too?"
Ivy Sherwood hadn’t expected to cause such a commotion. Elijah Hawthorne had come from far away, but Xavier Mercer was even farther. ’He must have rushed over from Elandra, right?’
’I’m really fine. I don’t need so many powerful men gathered around me.’
"Doesn’t she need to rest? Don’t you know that? All of you, out!"
Her big brother’s words carried a great deal of authority.
Quentin Blackwood also wanted Ivy Sherwood to rest well, so he was willing to leave. Elijah Hawthorne thought for a moment and followed him out.
Ivy Sherwood couldn’t actually sleep. She said, "Brother, I think I’m fine. Why don’t we just go home?"
Miles Mercer also spoke up, "The doctor said you need to stay for observation."
After all, Ivy Sherwood was pregnant, and the baby was already a few months along. She couldn’t just bounce around freely like Nina Scott.
The anesthetic still had an effect on her body, especially on the fetus.
Nina Scott said, "I’ll come in and keep you company. Let those men go play somewhere else!"
Before leaving, Quentin Blackwood took something out of his bag. "This is for you."
Ivy Sherwood took it. "These are my mother’s things!"
Quentin Blackwood said, "Yes. Ruby Sterling handed them all over."
"Thank you, Quentin." Ivy Sherwood was overjoyed that her mother’s belongings had been returned.
The men went outside together. Now there were four handsome men standing by the door. Not far from the hospital room, people were secretly taking pictures with their phones.
It was rare enough to see one handsome man, but now there were four!
And each was handsome in his own unique way!
Although the four men were standing together, no one spoke. After all, they couldn’t stand the sight of each other, so the atmosphere between them wasn’t exactly friendly.
Quentin Blackwood was the first to speak. "Charlie Rhodes’s cause of death is still unclear. It wasn’t necessarily Ivy who killed him. The body is being examined."
Although the Rhodes family didn’t want an autopsy, Quentin Blackwood forced the issue. He had his methods; the Rhodes had to agree whether they wanted to or not.
The results of the examination would probably be out soon. If someone else had framed Ivy Sherwood, then that person had just signed their own death warrant.
Xavier Mercer hadn’t yet settled the score with Quentin Blackwood. Quentin had pursued his sister so relentlessly, but now that he had won her over, he couldn’t even guarantee her basic safety.
However, it wasn’t entirely Quentin Blackwood’s fault. After all, his own younger brother had been there at the time and hadn’t expected this to happen either.
"If the examination results are unfavorable for Ivy, I’m afraid it will have a significant impact on her." This was what worried Xavier Mercer.
It didn’t matter whether Charlie Rhodes lived or died; Ivy Sherwood wouldn’t be held responsible. But if she had been the one to kill him, she would surely pretend to be fine on the surface while being unable to move past it internally.
And just then, Quentin Blackwood’s phone rang. It was a call from the forensics department.
"President Blackwood, the results from the medical examiner are in."
