Chapter 304: Dreadful Melee

Three figures stumbled out of the shadow of a building, falling to the ground as they felt the earth tremble.

Rolling to his feet, Leon grunted, his face pale. Using Shadow Teleportation twice in a row while carrying others with him was taxing, and his mana had dropped to critical levels.

Selene also stood up, her expression dark. "They can sense our location?"

He nodded, then took out his spear again. "This is going to be tough."

He raised his head, seeing another barrage of attacks falling on them. Gritting his teeth, he prepared to grab Selene and pull her away with the cat too.

"Wait," She said, stopping him.

Raising her hands towards the sky, she thought, ’Ice Mirror.’

A sphere of ice covered them like a dome, and the attack fell on it.

Leon’s eyes narrowed, ready to pull them away once the barrier shattered. However, to his surprise, the explosion he was expecting didn’t happen.

Instead, the attacks that landed on it sank in, then shot out again, back towards the parasites that had launched the attacks.

Leon’s eyes widened in astonishment.

The attacks kept pouring, but Selene’s Ice Mirror redirected them, causing explosions in the horde of parasites.

Her expression quickly paled, and she staggered slightly. She had been hesitant to use this skill, as it consumed mana greatly to redirect the attacks.

Leon quickly supported her, then glanced at their surroundings. The parasites still maintained their distance, wary of the lady’s freezing abilities.

"Hold it for a little longer."

Patting her shoulder, he dropped the cat and stepped away from them. Taking another step, he sank into his shadow.

The next moment, he emerged from the shadow of an unsuspecting Vaelari woman spamming lightning bolts on Selene’s Ice Mirror.

Using the dagger he had gotten from the underground bunker, he pierced straight through her head and threw her body to the ground. As the surrounding parasites turned to him, he vanished into her shadow, reappearing on another side of the battlefield.

Pushing the dagger through the head of a mutated lion, he twisted the blade and ensured it crushed the brain before he pulled back and vanished again.

The surrounding parasites tried to attack him, but he simply slipped away before they could reach him.

One by one, he took down the creatures using ranged attacks on Selene, easing the burden on the young lady. There were several times he had to dodge the redirected attacks, but his life was never truly threatened.

At least, until his mana completely ran out and he could no longer move unhindered between the parasites.

Taking a step back, he stiffened and suddenly spat blood when his activation of Shadow Teleportation failed.

Shivering, he managed to tilt his head just in time for an arrow to fly past him. Turning, he saw the archer Vaelari standing on a highrise building, nocking another arrow on the bow.

Leon scowled and took out his spear. Swinging it around him, he crushed the heads of the creatures surrounding him, then turned to look at the archer again.

The arrow had already been let loose.

Trusting the toughness of his new armor, he pulled his hand back, then threw the spear straight at the archer.

Bang!

The weapon tore through the air, then struck the man’s head cleanly. The head exploded, and the man’s corpse fell from above.

At the same time, the arrow struck Leon’s breastplate. However, it only touched him, then fell to the ground, unable to leave a dent.

"Ah...?"

Staring at his empty hand, Leon blinked in amazement. As one of his incredible feats, he had thrown his main weapon to kill one enemy in the distance, while being surrounded by more enemies.

Before the parasites could close in on him, ice spikes tore through them, killing some and bringing the others to the ground.

Leon quickly took the chance and escaped from the encirclement, returning to Selene’s side.

"That was a nice save," He said with a weak smile and a shaky thumbs-up.

Selene merely nodded, too tired to respond properly. Her mana was completely depleted as well, and she had been forced to cancel the skill. Thankfully, Leon had already dealt with most of the creatures attacking her with ranged abilities.

After taking a few deep breaths, she glanced at him and asked, "Do you want to borrow the poleaxe?"

Leon considered it, then nodded. He had no weapon at the moment other than the dagger. Although using Selene’s poleaxe was risky, it was manageable if he remained careful.

As long as he didn’t use it for too long, then he would be fine.

Selene took it out and handed it to him. As he held the pole, he expected some kind of psychological change, but he felt none.

’Mn? Maybe I’m immune to it or something.’

Shrugging inwardly, he swung the weapon sharply, then said to her, "Melee?"

She nodded, unsheathing her sword. "Melee."

The two humans dashed at the parasites, momentarily forgetting the cat behind them. It immediately dashed into a building, curling up in a corner and trying to remain unnoticed.

While Leon and Selene had exhausted their mana, their stamina hadn’t dropped by much. With their high physical stats, they easily tore through the horde.

"Don’t get scratched or injured! You don’t want to have one of those things in you!"

Leon shouted a warning to his partner as he crushed the head of three creatures in one swing before moving on to the next.

Selene didn’t need his warning to understand the situation. A single scratch could end the game. After all, parasites specialized in sneaking into people’s bodies through wounds.

Slicing through an enormous beetle’s head, she turned around and used her sword to block the claws of a large black feline beast.

Raising her leg, she kicked at its abdomen, sending it high into the air. As it fell to the ground, her blade sliced through its head, cleaving it into two parts. The creature dropped dead.

While Selene was graceful and elegant in killing her enemies, Leon was the opposite. He kept crushing the creatures left and right, ignoring the blood and gore that splattered on his armor.

Soon, however, the stain began to annoy him.
