Chapter 454: Chapter 161: The Green Tea Female Supporting Character in a Period Novel (48)
Jiang Yihua couldn’t help but glance back at their house number. Amused, he stepped forward to take the bicycle, but his gaze remained glued to Chi Yun’er, unwilling to look away.
Chi Yun’er pursed her lips into a faint smile. The moment she stepped through the main gate and closed it, she was pinned against it by the man. An intense and intoxicatingly masculine aura washed over her, making her heart flutter.
As the saying goes, a brief separation is sweeter than a honeymoon. The two held each other affectionately for a long while, expressing their longing and joy through the simplest and most effective form of contact.
"Why are you dressed like this? You look like a student," Jiang Yihua chuckled, planting an affectionate kiss on her forehead.
"What’s wrong with it? Isn’t it just a simple, retro-style outfit?" Chi Yun’er pushed him away and twirled around. "Just because I’m married, I can’t dress like this anymore? Do I have to look like some haggard housewife, all disheveled and plain?"
"Not at all. I just suddenly find this scholarly air about you especially intoxicating!"
Jiang Yihua pulled her into his arms again. "I specifically requested an assignment in the suburbs of Shanghai this time. I brought a lot of things back for you. Go take a look."
Chi Yun’er’s eyes curved into crescents as she smiled. She pulled him by the hand into the room and began rummaging through the packages with the eager anticipation of a little girl.
As he drank some water, Jiang Yihua gradually recounted his experiences. "Next time you’re not busy, why don’t you travel with me? The institute works with many places, and I have priority, so I can pick somewhere scenic that we haven’t been to before."
"We can squeeze in a vacation during your business trip!"
Chi Yun’er nodded eagerly. "Yes! In my whole life, I’ve never been anywhere besides the Capital City and the village I was sent to. I really want to see the beautiful landscapes of our country. And of course, it would be best to go with you!"
Chi Yun’er stopped keeping him in suspense and told Jiang Yihua everything that had happened recently: how she had taken on a major hospital reconstruction project while he was away, and how the proposal she wrote was so outstanding that she had been accepted as a student by Professor Bai from Imperial University!
"So, Comrade Jiang Yihua, I’m now your fellow student and junior," Chi Yun’er said, draping herself over him with a smile. She cooed, "Senior Brother Jiang, you’ll have to take good care of your little junior from now on!"
’Why is it,’ Jiang Yihua wondered, ’that such normal words, just like the clothes she’s wearing, can make my blood rush with an uncontrollable impulse?’
How could he possibly not be charmed by his pretty and mischievous young wife?
In the end, the two of them retired to the bedroom to discuss "important life matters."
The hospital’s replanning and reconstruction required a great deal of preliminary work. Although she had invited Professor Bai to help guide the design, she was really inviting both the professor and the team he had assembled.
Chi Yun’er’s role was simply to provide the requirements and suggestions for the new hospital.
Her initial vision would serve as the primary reference. Based on that, Professor Bai and his team would use their professional expertise to translate her ideas into official blueprints.
They likely wouldn’t even have a preliminary draft ready within one or two months, so Chi Yun’er could attend her classes every day with peace of mind.
To others, she had only spent a year in the countryside after graduation, but in reality, Chi Yun’er hadn’t touched a textbook in over twenty years. She had forgotten most of her knowledge and needed to relearn it from scratch.
Even though the national college entrance exam had been canceled, the admission standards for Imperial University, Xiahua’s top institution of higher learning, remained incredibly high. Applicants had to be in the top one hundred students from the Capital City’s key high schools.
Students from other provinces had to rank in the top ten of their city-level (or higher) unified high school exams just to be eligible to apply.
Alternatively, workers who had made significant contributions in their posts could be granted a slot to return for advanced studies.
Each requirement was so stringent that it was designed only for those who stood head and shoulders above the rest.
Chi Yun’er’s grades in high school had been excellent; she often ranked at the top of her class.
However, the Capital City was huge and had numerous high schools. Some were even affiliated with prestigious universities, boasting a quality of teaching and academic standards that other schools simply couldn’t match.
So when the results of the final unified exams were compiled city-wide, her first-place rank at her own school plummeted to over 120th in the city, meaning she missed her chance to get into Imperial University.
She originally had a chance to attend other universities, but her younger self, head-over-heels in love and having never experienced life’s hardships, gave no thought to the future. After a bit of coaxing from Jiang Zishi, she resolutely decided to go to the countryside.
Now, Chi Yun’er struggled through her classes taking notes while also squeezing out time to systematically review all of her old knowledge from scratch.
The students at Imperial University were all academic aces, the diligent, hard-working kind, which made her feel too ashamed to even think about slacking off. Fortunately, with Jiang Yihua as her personal cheat code, Chi Yun’er managed to make up for her deficiencies within six months.
