WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE
Chapter 96: WHAT STAYS CONNECTED
The first Organization officer crossed the illuminated passage at a run, and the Arcline beneath Sio’s feet shifted while the man was still near the midpoint. The change was small, only a sideways pull through the floor, but the connecting tunnel flexed with it. Pale joints along its walls slid over one another while both transports held speed in the dark, their windows level for now.
Fern shoved the freed children toward the ramp. "Up. Keep moving." Caspian took the front, guiding them around the first locked door, while Rhea stayed at the rear with one hand against the wall. The silver Legacy Index still hovered above the Organization directory behind them, its two classifications refusing to disappear.
EARTHFARER RESPONSE: ACTIVE / UNCONTAINED
SUNFARER CANDIDATE: ACTIVE / UNCONTAINED
Angle looked once at his own line, then toward the officers entering through the passage. Heat rolled around his fingers. "I liked it better when they only knew my face." Sio tucked the black core against his palm. "Your face was already doing plenty of damage."
The first officer raised a rifle. Angle slapped the barrel aside as heat raced through the metal, bending it near the receiver, while Rhea stepped past him and drove her shoulder into the officer’s chest. The impact sent him into the passage wall. A moving joint caught his coat and dragged him sideways until he tore free, and more boots struck the connector behind him.
Sio opened a portal across the corridor and aimed the exit near the ramp above. The entrance formed cleanly, but the second opening appeared, shivered, then smeared along the wall as the Arcline changed position beneath both points. Pain pinched behind his Scar, and he killed the portal as its edge began folding into itself. Same problem. Bigger machine.
Gumm made a soft clicking sound from his shoulder and stretched one arm toward the ramp, then another toward the passage. His tiny fingers opened and closed as though testing the distance between them. Fern fired twice past Sio, forcing one officer behind the connector frame while another pushed through. "We cannot hold this hallway and move the children."
Rhea’s palm flattened harder against the wall, her ears shifting with the vibration. "The second transport is drifting closer." Sio glanced through the window. The other Arcline filled most of the view now, its pale side running beside them. The connecting passage was not fixed between two places. It kept correcting itself, lengthening by inches, shortening again, bending with every change in the tunnels, and yet the path existed anyway.
A shot struck the wall near Sio’s head and sprayed hot fragments across his cheek. Angle moved in front of him, one forearm raised as heat distorted the air. "Whatever you’re thinking, think faster." Sio wiped grit from his face. "Very supportive." Angle’s mouth tightened. "I’m improving."
Caspian shouted from the ramp. One of the modern locks had sealed the upper door, trapping half the children below while the others had already passed through. Fern swore and started toward it, but three more officers entered the connector. Rhea pivoted toward Sio. "Sio." He looked from the sealed door to the moving passage. "I see it." I absolutely do not.
He opened another portal beside the trapped children. The exit formed in the upper corridor, but as the Arcline leaned through another turn, the two edges pulled apart across his perception. He tried to hold their positions and the strain doubled. Purple light crawled along the portal rim, narrowing one side until a child could no longer fit, so Sio released it through clenched teeth. The little girl nearest him stared at the empty wall where it had vanished.
Gumm climbed down his arm and dropped to the floor. He stretched one limb toward the sealed upper door, stuck the tip against the metal, then stretched another back toward Sio’s boot. The rest of his body elongated between the two points while the carriage moved beneath him. Neither hand stayed in the same place relative to the tunnel outside, but Gumm kept both attached. Sio stopped looking at the walls.
Another shot cracked from the connector. Angle and Rhea had pushed the officers back toward it while Fern dragged a fallen rifle out of reach. Caspian was wrenching at the lock housing without tearing the whole door from its frame, but Sio watched Gumm instead. Not the place.
His Scar opened across the corridor. Routes appeared in violet lines, the familiar ones snapping toward doors, corners, openings and destinations, but underneath them something thinner moved with the Arcline itself. A line between Gumm’s two hands bent as the vehicle shifted, yet never broke. Sio’s attention followed it until the ache beneath his eye sharpened. The relation.
The second Arcline drifted farther away. The connector extended with it, its ribs sliding and locking in a new shape without ceasing to be the same passage. Sio raised one hand toward the children and another toward the upper corridor. He stopped asking where the exit was and held what it was connected to instead.
The Scar burned as a portal opened beside the children and its twin formed above the ramp. The Arcline curved beneath them, both openings moving with their surfaces rather than slipping away. Sio’s knees softened, and he caught himself against the wall as system text flashed across his vision.
〈RELATIONAL PATH STABILITY DETECTED〉
〈CLAIM INTEGRATION INCREASING〉
〈HOST CAPACITY STRAIN RISING〉
The letters were thin enough to blur beneath the pain. Fern saw the portal and grabbed the nearest child. "Through. Now." The girl crossed, and the opening dragged with the moving wall but stayed whole. A second child followed, then a third. Sio could feel every change in the Arcline trying to turn the relation back into a location. You’re not there. The exit shifted several centimeters as the upper carriage flexed, but he followed the connection instead. You’re connected to this. Another child crossed.
Pressure spread from Sio’s Scar into his temple, and warmth ran beneath his nose. He tasted metal when he swallowed. Gumm released the door, hurried back and slapped both small hands onto Sio’s forearm. The portal steadied enough for Fern to send another child through.
Rhea glanced back while blocking a rifle stock with her elbow. Her other hand struck the wall. "Left side is about to rise." The route tugged left as the Arcline banked. Instead of forcing the portal to stay where it had been, Sio adjusted the relation with the floor. His stomach lurched with the vehicle, but the opening stayed upright for the children crossing it.
Angle backed toward them, heat washing over the connector entrance. The frame reddened where his hand passed, forcing the next officer to recoil. "How many?" Sio fought to keep his focus on the portal. "Five." Angle glanced toward the children already through. "You said that three kids ago." Sio’s jaw tightened. "I’m busy." Angle nodded. "That explains the counting."
Fern shoved the last child through and followed immediately. Caspian went after her, then turned from the upper side and reached back through the portal. "Come on." Sio tried to step forward, but his leg folded under him. Rhea caught the back of his coat and hauled him upright, her fingers trembling against his shoulder from whatever she was still reading through the machine. "Close it."
"Everyone?" Sio asked, unable to turn his head without the portal wobbling. Rhea checked the upper corridor. "Through." A wave of heat rolled past Sio’s face as Angle retreated from the connector. "And unfortunately, so am I." Sio let the portal collapse.
The release of pressure made his vision darken at the edges. He wiped beneath his nose and found blood across his knuckles while Gumm climbed back onto his shoulder and wrapped around the side of his neck. The system text returned, steadier this time.
〈RELATIONAL PATH STABILITY: TEMPORARY〉
〈INTEGRATION RESPONSE CONFIRMED〉
〈HOST CAPACITY INSUFFICIENT FOR SUSTAINED USE〉
Sio stared at the final line until it faded. "Of course." Rhea pulled him fully upright. "What?" He wiped his hand against his sleeve. "My own power has developed an opinion about me." Her ears shifted once. "That sounds deserved."
They moved up the ramp while the sealed door below shook under impacts from the Organization side. Caspian had jammed the locking mechanism with a twisted metal plate, but the metal already squealed in its frame. Sterling’s projection returned in fragments above Fern’s wrist, his face breaking apart with static before settling. "I lost you for forty-three seconds. What did you do?"
Sio wiped the last blood from his lip. "Improved public transportation." Fern glanced back at the wall where the portal had moved with them. "He kept the endpoint attached to us instead of the place." Sterling went silent, and Sio pointed at his projection. "Don’t make it sound impressive. It hurts."
The Arcline guide appeared above the black core and raised one hand as though requesting attention. "Connection transfer incomplete. Please remain calm while service alignment is corrected." Behind them, the illuminated passage began retracting. Organization officers on the other transport stopped advancing and moved back as the two Arclines separated into the buried dark.
Angle watched the other transport fall away beyond the glass. "They’re giving up?" Fern’s expression tightened. "No." The old Arcline hum filled the corridor again, uninterrupted except for the fading impacts against the jammed door.
A restraint clip beside Sio’s boot trembled, then lifted from the floor. He watched it rise past his knee as Gumm’s body floated from his shoulder and his small limbs cinched around Sio’s collar. Rhea slapped one palm against the wall, but her eyes widened as her feet lost pressure against the floor. The cheerful guide flickered above the core, its outline stretching upward while the loose restraint bands scattered across the floor around the children began to rise. Sio grabbed for the nearest rail as down lurched toward the ceiling, and Angle hit it first.
