WAYFARER: CLAIM THE UNCLAIMABLE

Chapter 72: BEYOND THE THRESHOLD

Cold metal entered the edge of Sio’s vision from the front while something heavier cut toward his ribs from the side. Both hunters had returned inside the space his Scar needed him to understand, their paths closing before he could decide which one to break.

Pale stone split behind him. Ur stepped through with one paw already beneath the nearer hunter’s wrist, rolled the attacking arm across his forearm and turned his shoulder. The hunter’s own speed carried him off his feet and across the wet grass.

Sa emerged lower from Veilhollow’s sealed face. Her paw slipped between Sio and the second strike, tapped the wrist aside, then struck beneath the elbow. She stepped across the hunter’s stance, hooked his ankle and sent him tumbling toward the cave mouth.

Sio backed toward the mountain. "You two know martial arts?" Ur settled his weight, forepaws raised with disturbing neatness. "Kung Paw." Sa’s ears flattened. "He insists on calling it that." Ur glanced at her. "Because that is its name." Sa snorted. "Because you named it."

Sterling pulled three black discs from his coat while Angle and Rhea spread to either side. Thin beams joined the discs near ankle height as rain glittered through them. "I dislike how much sense this makes."

Ur glanced toward the field. "Until you clear Veilhollow’s threshold, you are still ours to send away alive. Beyond it, your survival becomes your own problem." Sio rubbed the burning skin beneath his right eye. "Very generous." Sa bared her teeth toward the recovering hunters. "Appreciate it before they remove your head."

The man from the boulder tore the wrapping from his weapon, exposing a narrow black staff, then rushed downhill. Sio caught the beginning of his route beneath the Scar and lost it almost immediately.

He did not chase it. Wet grass folded where no visible foot touched it, rain jumped from a shallow puddle, and one of Sterling’s sensors tilted toward empty air. "Left."

Rhea moved on the warning. Her claws struck the black staff with a crack that shook water from the grass, and the hunter slid one hand along the shaft to turn her momentum against her. Ur stepped inside, rolled one paw around the staff and bumped the man’s elbow. The movement twisted the weapon across its owner’s chest and guided him straight toward Rhea’s knee.

Sio opened a portal at the hunter’s back. He folded through it and dropped beside Angle, who drove a compact burst of heat into the ground at his feet. Mud exploded upward, and the hunter stumbled into Sterling’s nearest field shoulder-first.

The dark-coated hunter from the broken pine vanished from Sio’s awareness as another beam between Sterling’s discs snapped. Angle turned toward the break, but Sa pivoted under a blade appearing from empty air and struck twice with the heel of her paw, wrist first, then shoulder. She hooked the hunter’s knee and laid him across the slope with a clean turn of her hips.

Sio opened a portal beside Rhea without calling her name. She stepped through and drove both hands toward the downed hunter, but he disappeared before contact, leaving her claws cutting trenches through the mud. "Annoying," she muttered. Sio watched water kick upward behind Angle. "Very. Behind you."

Angle spun as a blade scraped across his gauntlet. Fire compressed around his free hand until the rain between them paled, but he drove the blast into the ground instead. The explosion separated them and sent the dark-coated hunter skidding into Sterling’s second field.

The barrier bent around the hunter’s shoulders. Sterling raised two fingers. "I recommend doing something violent now." Sio opened three portals, one beneath the trapped hunter and two beside Rhea and Sa.

Sa struck through one opening and knocked the hunter’s elbow sideways. Rhea’s fist followed from the other direction, catching his jaw as his guard collapsed. He dropped through the portal beneath him and hit the slope near Ur, who caught his wrist, shifted his weight and folded him face-down with one smooth rotation. A short paw strike between the shoulders left him still.

Sio stared. "That looked unnecessarily professional." Ur released the wrist. "Sloppy violence wastes energy." Sa glanced toward Rhea. "He practices that sentence."

The staff hunter tore himself free of Sterling’s barrier and retreated toward the lower road. Angle sent controlled heat across the safest route, forcing him to change direction. Sio closed the next option with a portal, and when the hunter turned again, Rhea was waiting.

Her fist caught his jaw, but he rolled with it and swung the staff toward her temple. Sa caught the shaft between both paws and rotated her wrists until his grip broke. Ur received the loose weapon without looking and planted it into the mud, leaving Rhea free to hit the man again. He stayed down.

The remaining hunters broke formation. Two ran for the road while another raised a crossbow from behind an overturned stone. Sio opened a portal across the first runner’s route and dropped him directly in front of Rhea, who drove him back into the slope. Angle laid a narrow wall of heat across the second route, steam bursting from the wet ground and forcing the runner to stop.

The crossbow fired. Sa turned one paw, let the bolt scrape along a claw and redirected it into the dirt beside the shooter’s hand. She tilted her head toward the weapon. "Again?" The crossbow dropped, and other weapons followed until the slope quieted beneath rain hissing against scorched earth.

Sio let his portals close and bent forward, palms against his thighs. Hot metal, wet soil and burned grass coated the air, while each blink dragged against the ache beneath his Scar. Rhea passed with blood dark along one side of her shirt and nodded toward the unconscious elites. "Shared custody?" Sio managed a tired grin. "I think we’ve moved into property damage."

Stone was already climbing Ur and Sa’s legs when Angle noticed. He walked toward the threshold as the bears slowly returned to the mountain. "You’re leaving?" Sa looked down at the stone swallowing her paws. "We never left. You did."

Ur’s gaze moved from Angle to Rhea. "Veilhollow recognized both of you. Do not confuse recognition with understanding. Sunfarer and Earthfarer are older than the names you were given for them." Rhea’s eyes narrowed. "And the Vestige?" Sa answered, "It remembered what it was permitted to remember. The rest was taken, hidden, broken or carried elsewhere."

"That sounds deliberately unhelpful," Sio said as Gumm climbed onto his shoulder. Sa regarded him. "It is deliberately accurate." Ur’s muzzle shifted slightly. "Better than being confidently wrong."

Stone had reached their shoulders. Angle lowered his head toward Ur. "Thank you." The bear held his gaze. "Do something useful with what you were given." Sa looked at Gumm. "And try not to lose that one again." Sio frowned. "I found him." Sa’s eyes moved to Rhea. "You found Rhea wearing him."

Gumm chirped against Sio’s neck, earning an accusing finger. "No testimony from you." Sa disappeared into pale rock with what looked suspiciously like satisfaction, and Ur followed until the mountain held only two fading mineral shapes.

A low mechanical hum rolled over the trees. Sterling checked the transmitter at his wrist. "Finally." Three aircraft crossed the ridge in formation, narrow white bodies opening segmented solar membranes while ducted rotors tilted for descent.

The lead craft settled near the lower road as the other two hovered above it. Armed personnel in pale fitted armour moved down the ramp, followed by medics carrying hard cases. Sio looked from them to Sterling. "You have an army." Sterling adjusted his glasses. "Security." Sio pointed upward. "There are three aircraft." Sterling remained unmoved. "Still not an army."

A medic reached him and began checking his injuries. Sterling tolerated it long enough to hand Sio a slim rectangular device. "Communication only. Do not open it, modify it, Claim it or give it to Gumm." Sio turned it over once. "You really learned nothing about me." Sterling pushed his glasses higher. "I learned exactly enough."

His attention shifted to Angle, and the dryness left his face. "Your father commissioned another set of heat-resistant clothes. They were already being made." Angle looked at the smoke curling from one gauntlet seam. Sterling continued more quietly, "I’ll finish them. And whatever else he arranged." Angle gave him a small nod.

Sterling looked across the group. "Try not to enter another legendary death cave until I replace my equipment." Rhea smiled while Sio lifted the communicator. "No promises." Sterling sighed. "That is why I am taking precautions."

The security team escorted him toward the aircraft while medics moved among the captured hunters. At the top of the ramp, Sterling raised two fingers toward them and disappeared inside. The craft lifted through the trees, solar membranes folding against their sides as they climbed away.

Rhea watched them vanish, then turned south. The ease that had returned to her face went with them. "There’s somewhere I need to take you." Angle tightened the strap around his gauntlet. "How far?" Rhea started downhill. "Not far enough."

Pine thinned as they descended into wetter forest. Broad leaves held rain above them, roots rose from the soil like walls, and the air grew warm against Sio’s damp shirt. Rhea said almost nothing, and Gumm eventually left Sio to settle across her shoulders again.

Old smoke reached Sio near dusk, charcoal soaked by repeated rain rather than anything still burning. Wooden platforms appeared around enormous trunks ahead, joined by woven bridges beneath strips of dark solar cloth. Some roofs had collapsed into the undergrowth, while others had been repaired with pale timber and fresh rope.

Movement stopped on a platform above them. A child stared through the leaves, another figure appearing behind them as Rhea stepped into view. Her hands began shaking at her sides. The child’s eyes widened and turned toward the settlement. "Rhea’s back!" Voices answered deeper among the trees, doors opened, and feet crossed wooden bridges.

Rhea did not move. "I thought everyone was dead." The words came out so quietly Sio almost missed them. He remembered her asking Ursa whether the Vestige could return something forgotten, a question he had mistaken for curiosity. Looking at the damaged homes and the survivors rushing toward her, he understood what she had actually gone to Veilhollow hoping to recover: the missing stretch of memory between finding her home destroyed and opening her eyes near Veilhollow.
