Chapter 1315: Chapter 564: Musillon’s New Master
Old World, Brittania, early July, Cursed City Musillon.
Laine finally entered Musillon with the posture of a victor.
This fortress, as solid as a rock, had finally fallen before him. Laine, filled with the joy of victory, led his directly affiliated forces into this place that was both a fortress and a city.
Low houses were linked together in clusters, all the residents had surrendered, and apart from the humans, the undead had been completely destroyed. Now, what remained for Laine was less than twenty thousand residents and clusters of dilapidated houses, twisted streets, filthy gutters, and waterlogged roads.
Yet, despite this, the city’s former glory was still faintly visible. Musillon City was divided by a tributary of the Grismore River into two districts—North City District and South City District. At its peak, the entire city could accommodate a hundred thousand people; during the reign of Landuin’s legitimate son Lancekote, the city’s prosperity was not inferior to that of the capital Crona.
Musillon was more than ten times the size of Gene Town, which was Laine’s current seat.
The North City District was mainly composed of the Lost District and the shanty district. The Lost District was the area for the wealthy, where the remaining few Musillon Nobles resided. Inner Castle, the famous Merovin Castle, stood here, where the Vampires ruled Musillon.
The shanty district, also known as the poor district, was also called the dock district. Many peasants made their living here, and near the docks, there was a Sea God Manannan Temple. This temple continued to operate with the tacit approval of the Vampires, but it did not preach; it only accepted offerings and worship. Thus, there were no priests or bishops of the Sea God Church stationed here, only some dock workers had formed an organization to maintain the temple’s operation.
The South City District consisted of three parts: the Temple District, the Commercial District, and the Bridge District. The Temple District even preserved the ruins of a Holy Grail Church, though the church had been closed for over three hundred years. There’s not much to say about the Commercial District; inside it were taverns, whorehouses (and harmonious), drug dens, fighting pits, and other dark, decadent places more numerous than one can count, which were the primary target of cleanup for the Holy Grail Knights.
The Bridge District was the place where the few Free People resided. It was also known as the "Fallen Paradise," the most chaotic and disorderly area, and standing in the middle of Jiangxin was the ancient Jiangxin Island "Landuin Street," which was once the retreat and retirement place of Landuin in his later years.
The sky was overcast, the low-hanging clouds mingled with the residual smoke from the explosive fires, clinging to Musillon’s sky. The air was filled with the acrid smell of burning, making Veronica and Teresa wrinkle their noses; both witches had varying degrees of cleanliness obsession, both preferring cleanliness.
"So, this will be Laine’s seat in the future?" Veronica’s sweet face held a faint hint of disdain: "Dirty, messy, poor, heavens, I won’t move here, I swear."
"I won’t either, but this city should be rebuilt and renovated, right?" Teresa felt extremely uncomfortable in such an environment, the female sorcerer appeared very weak from excessive use of Magic Power, forcing herself to endure the oppressive sunlight of July: "Oh, I’ve had enough. I’m going to the carriage!"
"Go, go." Veronica was indifferent; she was already choosing a location for her new Magic Shop.
Ahead of the team, Laine, Bohemond, and Francois were also discussing Musillon.
"Over three hundred years, Brittania has besieged Musillon not less than twenty times." Francois looked at Musillon’s streets, sighing: "But every time they returned in failure. Finally, Laine, you’ve done it, you’ve reclaimed this lost territory. You are now the true Duke of Musillon!"
"Three hundred years." Bohemond nodded, the Red Dragon Duke spoke in a rough voice: "After the Dor Tower incident, then Duke Madred of Connaught was declared a traitor by the true Knight King Taylor. After ending the civil war, Taylor laid siege to Musillon for three years, but even after three years, His Majesty Taylor and the Dukes could not conquer this fortress, losing many troops and consuming large amounts of food instead."
"But life in Musillon was also tough at that time. The fortress had fallen into famine and disease, and Duke Madred died from redpox after living a debauched life every day. Upon confirming Madred’s death, His Majesty Taylor announced the abandonment of the siege, simultaneously declaring Musillon a desolate land with no duke ruling anymore."
Laine nodded, having deeply experienced the difficulty of capturing Musillon, even when the number of defenders had dwindled to its limit. He and his army still spent immense effort to capture this fortress.
Moreover, if it hadn’t been for the Blood Dragon Ancestor mediating and negotiating, even breaking the fortress would have meant facing brutal street fights, with this exhausted army likely suffering countless more losses.
Once a prosperous and magnificent city was now in ruins. Laine faced this desolate scene, sighing: "This was once one of the major cities of the High Elves in the Old World! It was renowned as the Jewel of the West Coast, a famed city built up!"
"It will prosper again." Francois thought for a while, at this moment he could only comfort his son-in-law: "What you’ve inherited is a blank canvas, though nothing is on it, you can also draw at your whim and fantasy as you please!"
