Void System: Every Heroine Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 139: A Kit Built for War
By afternoon, Rhyvara had moved the question out of the house.
The south yard gave her enough open ground to stand clear of the manor wall without drifting near the gate. The investigation packet rode in her left hand, with the broken-seal slip from that morning still resting on top. Alicia stayed near Severin’s right side as they came out through the manor doorway.
Rhyvara stopped in the open center of the yard. "If we’re working the same field, something needs settling now."
Severin stayed near the manor-side edge. "Go on."
"You plan around what I show you. Not around what you think a Rank A Hunter ought to have." She kept her voice low; the limit didn’t need volume. "I’ll give you 3 functions I can commit to a shared operation. The rest stays mine until I decide otherwise."
Reasonable. He had no interest in building a plan around imaginary tools anyway.
"Show me the 3," Severin said. "If I need something else, I’ll ask. If you keep it, I plan without it."
Rhyvara’s jaw eased by a fraction. "Good."
Alicia’s gaze moved between them. She stayed silent.
Rhyvara slid the packet under her left forearm, freeing her right hand. "We’ll start with movement. Have Alicia cross the yard, use that doorway, disappear from sight, then come back the same way."
Severin glanced sideways. "Alicia. Doorway. In and back."
"Right away, Master." She moved immediately.
Rhyvara didn’t turn her head much as Alicia crossed. Her eyes did the work, tracking Alicia, Severin, the open lane, the south-gate side, the doorway behind him. The shift was subtle until Alicia reached the manor wall.
"Still tracking her?" Severin asked.
"Of course. She’s visible."
Alicia stepped through the doorway.
Rhyvara went still.
Severin waited.
"Now?"
"I have the doorway she used, her last direction, and where she can reasonably return." Rhyvara watched the opening. "I don’t have her position."
Alicia appeared again.
Rhyvara’s focus caught her at once. "Now I do."
Alicia crossed back and stopped near Severin. "Here, Master."
"Skirmish Map," Rhyvara said. "It keeps what I can actually observe organized. Position, movement, cover, wounds I can read. Once something leaves my sight, the Skill doesn’t invent the missing piece."
’Good. A real limit.’
His attention shifted toward the doorway Alicia had used, then back to Rhyvara. "Useful. The blind spot matters more than the name."
"People hear ’map’ and assume it knows everything."
There was the first trace of dry humor he’d heard from her all day. Rhyvara let the effect go. A breath later, pale Core Essence gathered over her shoulders and right forearm.
This effect was impossible to mistake for ordinary perception.
Plates formed over her coat without pressing into the cloth the way real steel would. They fitted across shoulder, ribs, and forearm while leaving the rest light. A long weapon took shape in her right hand, narrow enough for speed, its edge bright with compressed Essence.
She shifted her stance, and the armor changed with her. The weapon shortened and thickened. A heavier plate rolled across her leading shoulder while another vanished from her flank, rebuilding the set for a heavier exchange. Rhyvara held the new shape only briefly before letting the weapon dissolve.
"Reactive Panoply," she said. "I keep a few profiles prepared. Armor, weapons, different balances. I can switch between them. I don’t get a perfect answer for whatever turns up."
The last plate broke apart into light and vanished before it touched the ground. Severin’s gaze stayed on her a moment longer than the demonstration required.
Rhyvara caught it. "Something wrong?"
"No."
Her eyebrows rose slightly.
Severin didn’t bother dressing the thought up. "I was interested before you walked into my house. Watching you work hasn’t reduced it."
Alicia became very quiet beside him.
Rhyvara’s face didn’t soften. She studied him instead, weighing the statement without giving him an answer.
"Keep that from distorting the field," she said.
"It won’t."
"Then we’re clear."
He left it there.
Rhyvara moved farther into the open lane. "Last demonstration. Give me pressure, not a strike."
The air changed before she named anything.
A faint tightening passed over Severin’s skin. The yard didn’t become silent, but the ordinary scrape of wind along stone dulled around Rhyvara. Dust near her boots flattened, then slipped sideways in a shallow curve.
She looked at him. "Whenever you’re ready."
Alicia was already clear of the lane. The gate servant remained well outside it. Nothing stood behind Rhyvara except open yard.
Severin raised a hand.
Gust Vector answered.
WHUFF!
A compact burst tore down the center lane. Dust jumped from the ground ahead of it.
The gust reached Rhyvara’s space and bent, but not all at once. Its center lost force first, spreading wide while the edges curled away from her. Loose grit hissed across the yard in 2 diverging streams. Her coat moved, but the hard snap Severin expected never came.
Rhyvara held the pressure for another heartbeat, then released it.
The wind returned to being only wind. "Pressure Ward," she said. "I can bend pressure through the air, damp vibration, take the teeth out of shock. Don’t mistake that for an absolute wall."
"I know better."
Rhyvara rolled a shoulder as the last tension left the air. "Good. Overconfidence kills formations faster than weak armor."
By the time Severin lowered his hand, the shallow dip in his Core Essence was gone; the Reserve had already filled it. That was enough testing. A second gust could only add spectacle.
Rhyvara came back toward them and pulled the packet free. She opened it with both hands, worked past the broken-seal slip, and drew out a route sheet.
"This is the patrol line I’m using," she said. "The dead Dragonkin shouldn’t have been near the road we found them on. If we’re moving together, this is the map that matters first."
Severin leaned in far enough to follow her finger across the route without taking the sheet from her.
"You hold your capabilities tight," he said.
"I hold command responsibility tighter." Her fingertip stayed on the road line.
"Good answer."
Her eyes lifted. "It wasn’t for your approval."
His mouth curved. "Still good."
Rhyvara held his gaze briefly; a hint of amusement almost reached her mouth.
Alicia stepped into the space at Severin’s near side before the moment could linger. "Master, where do you want me once we leave the manor?"
Severin looked at her. "Close enough to cover me without blocking Rhyvara’s movement. I’ll set the exact position after I see where we’re going."
Alicia’s expression brightened immediately. "Understood, Master."
Rhyvara’s gaze passed between them before returning to the patrol sheet. She traced the wrong road again, then a second line feeding toward it. Severin compared the marks with what Saelith had said that morning about the Beast movement. The lines crossed. They still didn’t tell him who, if anyone, had arranged them.
Footsteps came from the manor doorway.
Nyra came into the yard carrying a folded sheet. Her black ears angled slightly backward, enough to wipe the last ease from Alicia’s face.
Severin straightened. "What changed?"
"Retaliation’s moving." Nyra held up the paper. "My source is good for routes, not motives. I checked what they actually saw."
Rhyvara closed her packet. "Whose order?"
"Beastkin. At least that’s what the paper says."
Nyra handed it to Rhyvara first.
Rhyvara scanned it without speaking. Her thumb stopped halfway down the page.
"Where?" Severin asked.
She turned the order and laid it next to the patrol sheet so he could see the route named there.
The named village lay off the patrol road, away from the useful crossings, nowhere the morning evidence had given them a reason to care about.
Rhyvara looked at the working map again. "There’s no Dragonkin assignment there."
Nyra folded her arms. "No protected claim either."
"Then why send retaliation there?" Alicia asked.
Nobody answered at once. Severin read the order once, then again, paying attention to what it actually demanded rather than what he wanted it to mean. People were already moving under it. That made the paper dangerous whether the fault lay in the seal, the route, the reason, or somewhere before all 3.
Rhyvara raised the patrol sheet toward him. "Take the route map. I’ve already taken what matters from it."
He accepted it.
Nyra passed him the retaliation order next. "Don’t lose that. I may get another copy, but I wouldn’t bet on it."
"I won’t." Severin held the 2 sheets together and looked toward the manor doorway.
"Inside," he said. "We find out what this order is trying to make people do before they reach that village."
Rhyvara picked up her packet. Alicia turned with him at once, and Nyra followed them toward the manor.
