Chapter 426: Chapter 377: This Female Is So... So Cute
Alex said, "Ningning sent me your photo."
"..." Lanuo looked between the couple with a complicated expression, then said to Gu Ning, "Miss Ningning, if you’d added me on my terminal and sent it, it would have been more..."
Before he could finish, music filled the car, drowning out his voice.
Lanuo’s brow twitched, and he discreetly made a contemptuous gesture at Alex.
The drive into the urban center was quite long. Outside of the 12th District’s main city, the land was sparsely populated, with buildings appearing only rarely and far between.
Little Frost Town, where Gu Ning and the others were staying, only had a small population of Beastmen because it was close to a train transfer station.
Once they left the vicinity of Little Frost Town, vast white plains stretched out before them.
But this place was different from what they’d seen on their journey. Although it looked deserted, there were no ruins. The occasional buildings were intact houses—log cabins, even. From time to time, they could see a few scattered Beastmen in the distance, carrying massive logs or pulling sleds through the snow.
Gu Ning zoomed in with her camera lens and could see fish piled high like a small mountain on one of the sleds.
The snowy plain was vast, yet it didn’t feel desolate. It exuded an indescribable sense of security.
It was as if she had entered the Arctic Circle of her own world, only instead of humans, the inhabitants were various animal-like Beastmen.
Seeing a log cabin in the distance with smoke curling from its chimney, Gu Ning suddenly thought that it might be quite nice to live in a place like this.
"You like it here?"
Alex asked Gu Ning, turning down the music.
Gu Ning nodded. "It’s just too cold and remote."
She still preferred warmer places—ideally, somewhere not too cold and not too hot.
"This isn’t considered remote," Alex said. "We’re in the outer sector of the 12th District, so we’re still within the city limits."
Gu Ning asked in surprise, "This is the outer sector?"
She thought they were outside the city proper.
She had lived in both Zone 19 and Zone 15. In those places, the outer sectors were dangerous but still very much a part of the city—in fact, they were the largest and most densely populated areas. Even in a central zone like Zone 15, the outer sector made up half of its total area and was filled with abandoned districts.
The place where she and Cook used to live was very close to an outer sector, and she had even lived in one for a while. None of them were as vast and peaceful as this.
Especially after Alex said they were still within the city limits, her sense of security skyrocketed.
"That’s right," Alex said. "It’s even colder outside the city. Past the Northern Border Line is an endless ice plain. Farther on is the North Sea, which is the Sea Clan’s territory."
Gu Ning hadn’t heard the term "Sea Clan" very often; she was more familiar with "Sea Area." The two terms sounded very different, so they were easy to tell apart.
Just as she was about to ask about it, a group of dark figures appeared in her line of sight up ahead.
The figures approached with incredible speed, and in just a moment, Gu Ning could see the group clearly.
They wore matching black uniforms and looked like a security patrol. What caught Gu Ning’s eye, however, was their mode of transportation—a sled.
The group of six or seven Beastmen stood on the sled, which was being pulled by a massive... Alaskan Dog.
Gu Ning watched the scene with fresh curiosity. They only needed one dog to pull the sled.
’But,’ she guessed, ’this dog is probably... also a Beastman.’
She saw a black armband on the dog’s thick foreleg—the insignia of a security patrol.
"WOOF!" Seeing the sled team, Cook started barking excitedly at them, craning his head out the window so persistently that even Batora couldn’t hold him back.
Gu Ning quickly tried to calm him down. "Cook, quiet! Quiet!"
Cook’s excitement subsided a little at her words, but he continued to let out low yaps as he stared at the approaching sled team.
"It’s okay, don’t worry. It’s just a routine patrol," Alex said reassuringly to Gu Ning as he stopped the car.
The sled team came to a halt beside their car in an instant. Amidst a flurry of snowflakes, the Alaskan Dog pulling the sled stopped right next to Gu Ning’s window and turned its large head to look at her.
Gu Ning met the gaze of the big, fluffy dog with the serious expression and silently shrank back.
The next second, however, the big dog stuck its tongue out at her, panting as it leaned in to sniff her.
"Grrr," Cook let out a low, warning growl.
Upon catching Gu Ning’s scent, the big dog’s pupils contracted. It pulled its head back and sat up straight, but its eyes remained fixed on her. It panted with its tongue out as if smiling, then waved and gently placed a paw on her window.
’Oh... what a good boy!’
Gu Ning couldn’t help but feel her hands itch to pet him.
