Chapter 59- Stealth And New Discovery
Rize knew that every move he was about to make would either spill his end or get him closer to the exit. It was like walking through a minefield, except the mines were people who would tear him apart if they noticed him escaping.
’Not that much different from what a mine explosion would do to me, to be honest.’
However, Rize had confirmed that there was no exit from where he came from except through the main doors or the back doors of this old factory. So, with a nervous yet calm expression, he walked into the main hall and closed the door behind him gently, making sure not to awaken anyone there.
He looked left and right, counting the people in the room.
’That’s one... two... three... six... ten...’
The moment the number exceeded 12, Rize gave up trying to count any further. This entire factory was filled with these attackers.
’And I thought we took care of most of them. This is ridiculous.’ Rize frowned as he started moving slowly through the place. He tried to use everything he learned about stealth and making sure his presence was completely unnoticed.
The fact that the place was pitch black made navigating it harder. There were many small iron parts scattered everywhere around him, and each one could make a loud enough noise to wake everyone up if Rize stepped on them.
His eyes stared down intently as he took every careful step slowly.
’Good... Just keep your eyes on the stupid parts. Why are they even scattered like this? Ever heard of cleaning before, idiots?’ Sweat accumulated on his forehead from the nerve-wracking situation. Any mistake was going to end him. But if there was one thing Rize had, it was confidence in his own abilities.
After repeating the same exercises again and again and again for years, he developed a muscle memory that activates whenever he needs to execute something he already learned. Stealth was one of the core things Geralt taught him in those years, so Rize was extremely good at it.
Even when injured and tired with no sleep for almost two days, he could move like he was a ghost, unheard and unfelt by anyone around him.
After crossing halfway through, Rize stopped and looked left and right. He couldn’t see the main gates here, and he also couldn’t see any backdoors.
’The main door is just not an option with this many people in my way. They would almost certainly hear that. That leaves backdoors... If there are backdoors, where could they be?’ Rize frowned as he thought for a moment. The layout of the factory seemed rather straightforward from what he saw. When he was being dragged back and forth some time ago, he did locate several peculiar points of interest.
One of them was the room where the leader was. It was in a corner of the factory, a bit far away from the rest of the areas.
’In the kitchen... Wait, kitchen?’ Rize’s eyes shot open. ’There is always a backdoor through a kitchen in a factory or a restaurant. That’s it!’
Realizing the potential solution, Rize’s eyes went quickly to the door that he went through when he faced the leader. Then, he started moving there very slowly.
’Is it a bad idea to go to the strongest man in the entire damn place? Yes. Is it still the most viable option? Probably.’ Rize thought as he reached the door and grabbed the handle to open it.
As he was twisting the knob, he suddenly heard a movement behind him that made him freeze. He turned his head around to look, only to see that one of the men had risen from his slumber. Rize’s face paled as he watched the man stare around him. He seemed very groggy...
"Who’s there?" He asked with a low, tired tone.
Rize sucked a deep breath as he turned around and spoke. "I’m getting some water. Go back to sleep."
He made sure to deepen his voice and sound more like the Zatharis. It was a rough attempt at their accent since he only heard them speak a bit.
’Please work, please work, please work.’ He prayed in his head as he clenched his teeth, ready for the worst.
"Tsk, don’t scare me like that, man." He said as he lay down again and fell asleep.
"Fuuuh..." Rize exhaled a long breath before he finally opened the door and walked out of the hall into the kitchen.
’Damn you. That almost gave me a heart attack.’ He said as he rested against the door and caught his breath. ’Ok... That’s good. Just a bit more before I could leave.’
Rize then crouched down as he started moving through the kitchen. Luckily, there was no one there to scare him, so he could relax a bit. However, once he reached the gates to the Leader’s office, he stopped as he decided to try his new powers.
’If I’m correct, spreading my senses inside could risk alerting him. Hmmm, could Endless Hunger do something here?’
The moment he thought of that black amalgamation, it suddenly appeared underneath his feet as if heeding his call. The tentacle rose from the darkness and stared at him.
"Could you go beneath the door and check if there is any threat in there or not?" He asked.
Rize felt really bizarre talking to this thing, but it was his only option at that moment. It was clearly a very useful ability, so he might as well use it now rather than leave it for later.
Surprisingly, Endless Hunger understood his words, as a few seconds later, he received a notification.
[Endless Hunger Activated: Utility Mode.]
After activating that mode, the tentacle turned around and dove under the door, easily passing that small gap as it turned into a liquid state. Inside, the tentacle rose slowly and quietly again as it stared left and right in the darkness.
Rize sat there, not knowing what was happening. ’I wonder if it could really even understand what I’m looking fo-’
Before that thought could even finish, Rize suddenly felt a surge of information assault his mind. He almost fell back but quickly recovered.
’What is ha- Huh?’
What he saw deep in his mind shocked him. Rize saw a point of view, precisely Endless Hunger’s point of view inside. It was dark and a bit blurry, but still... Rize could see beyond that door without being there.
’This is insane...’ He thought to himself. ’It can send signals to my brain and show me what it’s seeing.’
The more Rize got to know about this ability, the more he realized how powerful it is. This is with him being completely clueless about it. For the first time in his life, Rize felt like he was a supernatural being, capable of seeing beyond doors and other hard objects.
The thrill of that thought made him instinctively smile before he shook his head.
’Ok, focus, Rize. No time to be acting like a literal child.’ He frowned. ’Hmmm, it’s kinda blurry, but I can see a light not far away. Can you get a bit closer without alerting him?’
The tentacle seemed to understand as it stretched forward very slowly and quietly.
’Yeah, just like that.’
As he got closer, Rize realized that Vigil was wide awake and seemingly focused on a computer screen in front of him. The light cast a shadow on the wall behind him, making his silhouette appear more sinister.
Then, Rize started hearing the man speaking. It was blurry and far away, almost like hearing someone speak underwater. But Rize instantly picked up a few words.
"We didn’t fail, sir... Our plan just got hindered... Everything is still going without a hitch." Vigil said coldly. "That hiccup is not major."
’He’s talking to someone.’ Rize frowned. ’Who?’
