Chapter 383: Supply Line Ambush

The first relay mark held long enough to become a target.

Lilith stood at the edge of the folded pocket and felt the feed running through it like a second pulse under the world. The structure was not a fortress. It was a throat. Authority gathered in a narrow column of pale machinery and script-bound stone, then pushed outward in a steady stream toward the distant enclave. No full wall of law. No chamber of chains. Just a working vein of the harvest, guarded hard enough to kill anyone careless.

"That is the one," Lilith said. Her voice was quiet and certain. "If we break the core joint, the feed dies. If we only damage the outer shell, it will re-route."

Lucifer studied the approach. The pocket sat in a dead stretch of upper void between known routes, hidden by the same kind of erasure that protected the enclave sector. Aeloria held the rear with restricted starfire ready. Nyx’s darkness was already thinning into cutting threads. Heron, Rhazor, and Zane formed the strike wedge. Damaris remained farther back on the extraction line, still too drained for the first impact but close enough to read the feed’s behavior when it broke.

"No long fight if we can avoid it," Lucifer said. "We hit the joint, collapse the relay, and leave before the enclave answers."

Rhazor’s heat rolled off his shoulders in a low wave. "If they posted guardians here, they will not let the joint die clean."

"Then we kill the guardians first," Nyx answered.

They moved.

The outer constructs found them the moment they crossed the pocket’s threshold. These were not the measuring plates from the first crossing or the street hunters from the capital. They were heavier, constructed like walking locks, each one bearing a core of compressed law that attempted to freeze authority on contact. One slammed into Rhazor and nearly pinned his fire in place before he burned straight through its chest and tore it open. Another closed on Zane with a binding frame that cracked under Heron’s spear a second before it could fully seal.

Lucifer did not remain on the edge of the fight. He drove through the center line, blood and shadow breaking the first rank of locks apart, and moved for the relay’s core joint with Lilith on his right. She fought as if she had been waiting through chains for a target she could finally reach with her own hands. Dark authority cut in brief, vicious arcs, stripping script from stone and forcing the feed line into the open.

"There," she snapped. "The joint is under the second ring. Do not hit the stream itself first. Hit the lock that keeps it stable."

A guardian rose from the relay’s heart before they reached it.

It was larger than the constructs, almost humanoid and almost mechanical, its white-and-gold armor fused over a frame of living law. The pressure coming off it was denser than the street hunters and cleaner than the old measuring walls. It looked at Lucifer once and then at Lilith, and the recognition in that glance was immediate.

"Recovered stock," it said in a flat voice. "And the late seed. This site is no longer low priority."

It attacked without further words.

The first clash threw Lucifer back three steps and cracked the stone under his boots. The guardian’s blade of law met his blood constructs and sheared through two of them before shadow thickened enough to hold. Lilith attempted to flank and nearly lost an arm when the guardian’s second strike folded space sideways and caught her mid-move. Nyx arrived in a surge of darkness and locked the guardian’s left side long enough for Rhazor to hit it from above with a column of fire.

Even so it did not fall.

"It is tied into the relay," Aeloria called from the rear. "As long as the feed is live, it is drawing support from the same line. Cut the joint or this thing will outlast us."

Lucifer changed targets.

He left the guardian to Nyx, Rhazor, and Heron for three harsh breaths and threw his full controlled weight into the core joint Lilith had marked. The lock fought him. Pale script flared and attempted to rewrite his authority into dead force. He pushed through it using True Divine density and felt the structure begin to scream.

Lilith reached the joint a heartbeat later and drove her recovered power into the same fracture. "Now."

The lock broke.

The feed stuttered, thickened, and tore open in a violent reverse surge. Authority that had been running toward the enclave snapped back into the pocket like a broken cable under load. The guardian staggered as its support vanished. Heron’s spear took it through the chest. Nyx’s darkness crushed what remained of its frame against the collapsing relay stone. Rhazor burned the wreckage until nothing coherent was left.

The pocket began to come apart around them.

"Extraction!" Lucifer ordered.

They withdrew from the relay structure as it folded in on itself. Zane dragged one of the wounded support operatives through the thinning edge. Aeloria held the exit path open with carefully rationed starfire. Damaris caught the residual pattern of the dying feed as they crossed out and spoke through clenched teeth.

"It worked. The stream is dead. But the orb only slowed. It did not stop. The other relays are already compensating."

Lilith wiped pale residue from her mouth and looked back once at the collapsing pocket. "Then this was a first cut, not a final one. There will be more veins. And next time they will not leave a guardian of that class alone on a low-priority site."

Lucifer felt the distant pressure of the orb through the broken route. The climb had changed. Not ended. The harvest had lost one throat and immediately begun breathing through the rest.

"We seal what we can of this route and move," he said. "One relay down. The board is not finished bleeding for it."

Behind them the folded pocket finished dying.

Ahead of them the remaining supply lines stayed open, and the threshold kept rising on every stream they had not yet cut.
