Chapter 302: The Return of the Fox

The days after her awakening blurred together.

Francisca slept more than she stayed awake. Her body needed time—not just to heal, but to remember how to be alive. The reconstruction chamber had given her flesh and bone, but the soul fragments needed to settle into their new home.

She dreamed of old things.

Running through forests that no longer existed. Laughing with people whose faces she couldn’t see. Dying. The cold. The dark. The long, silent wait.

Then warmth.

Lucifer’s voice, calling her name.

She woke on the seventh day and knew something had changed.

The ceiling of the guest chamber was unfamiliar. The sheets beneath her fingers were soft, expensive, nothing like the rough blankets she’d slept on a century ago. The air smelled of flowers and old stone.

She sat up.

Her body moved differently. Lighter. Faster. Stronger.

She looked at her hands. They were her hands. But something else was there, beneath the skin, behind her eyes, coiled in her chest like a second heartbeat.

Power.

More than she’d ever had.

She flexed her fingers. A flicker of golden light danced between them—not the harsh gold of Adam, but something softer. Warmer. Hers.

Behind her, something moved.

She turned.

Six tails.

Six golden tails, each one tipped with white, spread behind her like a fan. They moved on their own, swaying gently, responding to her emotions.

She stared at them.

Then she laughed.

It was a raw sound, surprised out of her.

"S-Six?"

The door opened.

Ella stood there, her arms crossed, her expression carefully neutral. But her eyes—her eyes gave her away.

"You’re awake."

Francisca’s tails twitched.

"Ella."

They looked at each other. A century of absence stretched between them. Words that should have been said. Apologies that should have been made.

Ella walked to the bed and sat down.

"You look terrible."

Francisca snorted.

"I was dead."

"You’re still terrible."

They sat in silence for a moment.

Then Ella pulled her into a hug.

It was quick. Fierce. Over before Francisca could react.

"Don’t do that again," Ella muttered.

Francisca’s throat tightened.

"I’ll try."

---

Luna found her in the garden.

The silver flowers were in bloom. Black roses climbed the trellises. The fountain murmured in the background, its water glowing faintly in the crimson light.

Francisca sat on a stone bench, her tails spread around her, her hands resting in her lap.

Luna approached slowly.

"You’re different."

Francisca looked up.

"So are you."

Luna sat beside her.

"Lucifer missed you."

Francisca’s ears twitched.

"I missed him too."

They talked for hours. Not about the war, or Adam, or the century of death. About small things. Books Luna had read. Flowers Francisca wanted to plant. The way the moons looked from the eastern tower.

At some point, Luna reached out and touched one of Francisca’s tails.

"Six."

Francisca nodded.

"The fragments... they changed me. I’m not just back. I’m more."

Luna’s eyes widened.

"Stronger?"

"Stronger."

"How much stronger?"

Francisca looked at the sky.

"I don’t know yet. But I can feel it. Like there’s something inside me that wasn’t there before."

Luna was quiet for a moment.

"Does it scare you?"

Francisca considered the question.

"No," she said finally. "Death scared me. This is just... power."

She looked at Luna.

"Tell me about the realm."

Luna told her.

About the trains and the mana reactors and the floating districts. About the clans uniting under Lucifer’s rule. About the humans leaving for New Earth. About the peace.

"A hundred years," Francisca murmured.

"A hundred years," Luna agreed.

"He waited for me that long?"

Luna’s expression softened.

"He never stopped. Not once."

---

Mob found her at the edge of the garden.

The sun had set. The moons were rising. The silver flowers glowed faintly in the darkness.

Francisca stood alone, her tails swaying gently, her face turned toward the sky.

"You’re avoiding me," Mob said.

She didn’t turn.

"You’re perceptive."

He walked to her side.

"I’ve had a century to practice."

They stood in silence.

The wind carried the scent of roses.

"I remember everything," Francisca said finally. "The fight. The dying. The dark." She paused. "I remember thinking about you. At the end."

Mob’s wings tightened against his back.

"What did you think?"

She turned to face him.

"That I should have told you sooner."

His golden eyes held hers.

"Told me what?"

She stepped closer.

"That I loved you."

The words hung in the air.

Mob’s expression didn’t change. But his wings relaxed.

"I know."

Francisca blinked.

"You know?"

"I’ve always known." He reached out and touched her face. His fingers were warm. Gentle. "I was waiting for you to say it."

She laughed. It was wet. Raw.

"You’re an idiot."

"I’m your idiot."

She kissed him.

It was soft at first. Tentative. A question.

Then his arms wrapped around her. His wings folded around them both, blocking out the world.

When they parted, her cheeks were wet.

"I’m sorry," she whispered.

"For what?"

"For dying."

Mob shook his head.

"You came back."

"That’s not—"

"It’s enough."

He pulled her close.

She pressed her face against his chest. His heart beat steady and strong.

"I’m not leaving again," she said.

"I know."

They stayed like that for a long time.

The moons rose higher.

The garden grew quiet.

And somewhere in the palace, Lucifer sat on his throne, staring at nothing, trying to remember a face he’d given up to save.

---

The next morning, Francisca walked the halls.

She visited the throne room. Watched Lucifer hold court. Saw the way his people looked at him—with fear, with respect, with something close to love.

She visited the library. Found Luna surrounded by books. Helped her organize the new arrivals.

She visited the training grounds. Watched Vina and Rey spar. Laughed when Rey tripped.

She visited the eastern tower. Found Ella staring out the window.

"You’re leaving," Francisca said.

Ella didn’t turn.

"Soon."

"Where?"

"The human realm. Dera asked for my help with something."

Francisca stood beside her.

"Will you come back?"

Ella finally looked at her.

"Always."

They watched the sun rise together.

The vampire realm stretched below them, dark and beautiful and alive.

A century of waiting.

Finally over.
