Chapter 121 - 86 : Borderfront (1)
Chapter 121: Chapter 86 : Borderfront (1)
The last traces of night still clung to the city when a cold wind came down from the northern ridges, moving in long gusts over the outer walls and through the gaps between the watchtowers. Along the battlements, the wind caught several banners and sent them snapping against their poles. Each bore the Azure Cloud Sect’s emblem, three layered cloud strokes beneath a small ascending crescent of azure light, a familiar mark against the pale morning sky. Several disciples caught the edges of their robes and pressed them down before continuing their patrol.
The eastern gate stood open, its heavy wooden doors drawn back as the first activity of the morning began to pass through.
A steady line of carts moved through the open gate, carrying what the outpost needed to keep running. Wooden crates filled with spirit stones were checked and counted before being taken farther inside, followed by sacks of grain, bundles of medicinal herbs, forged weapons, and materials for repairing formations. Mixed among the incoming supplies were several injured cultivators returning from sects missions, some walking on their own while others were helped down from the carts.
The flow continued without drawing much attention. For those living within the city, it was simply part of the morning routine.
At intervals along the walls, pale lines of light ran through the carved formations. Every so often, one of them brightened before settling again. Formation disciples moved between the stone pillars, checking the inscriptions and replacing exhausted spirit stones. Some worked on damaged sections, carefully repairing broken inscriptions, while others sat near fresh stone surfaces, adding new formation lines and symbols where they were needed. Around them, small tools, jade pieces, and spirit stones were laid out as the formations were maintained piece by piece.
Near the western gate, several Body Tempering disciples unloaded a damaged section of armor from a wagon. A pair of Qi Refining cultivators stood nearby, sorting through the broken pieces and discussing what could still be repaired. Beside them, a formation master ran his fingers along a deep crack in the metal, examining the damaged formation lines before deciding where the repairs would need to begin.
Farther beyond the walls, the land stretched toward the frontier in a wide, open expanse of grass and uneven ground. Low hills and scattered trees broke up the terrain, while a series of watchtowers stood across the open land, keeping watch over the land between the two sects.
The scars of earlier battles were still visible across the open ground.
Patches of earth remained blackened where fire techniques had burned through the grass, and several sections of stone had been shattered and left unrepaired. Some of the watchtowers still carried faint lines of formation light, running between them across the distance. Beyond those positions, the terrain continued toward the border where the forces of the Azure Cloud Sect and Crimson Purge Sect faced each other.
For now, the frontier remained quiet. The watchtowers stood in place, formations continued to hum along the walls, and the occasional movement of cultivators could be seen across the distant fields. The quiet simply left more eyes watching the border, waiting for any sign of movement from the other side.
Farther inside the city, the streets became busier. Disciples moved between the different parts of the outpost, some carrying weapons or supplies while others hurried toward the training grounds. Small shops and stalls had already opened along the wider streets, selling food, medicinal herbs, weapons, talismans, and other things the cultivators stationed here might need. The sound of conversation mixed with the clatter of carts, the ringing of metal from nearby workshops, and the occasional call of a disciple directing traffic through the crowded streets.
Most of the people moving through the city wore the robes of the Azure Cloud Sect. Body Tempering disciples made up the largest number, filling the streets in groups as they carried out their duties or headed toward the training grounds. Qi Refining cultivators appeared among them less often, their presence noticeable without drawing much attention. Every now and then, a Mid Qi Refining cultivator would pass through the streets, and occasionally someone at Late Qi Refining would appear before disappearing into one of the larger buildings or moving toward the outer defenses.
The deeper one went into the city, the less the streets felt like a place of ordinary trade. The shops became fewer, the buildings larger, and the number of disciples moving through the area more controlled. Formation halls, supply offices, training grounds, and other buildings belonging directly to the sect occupied this part of the city. Disciples entering or leaving these places were often carrying scrolls, jade slips, weapons, or other items that had little to do with ordinary commerce.
At the heart of this inner district stood the main formation hall.
It was larger than the surrounding buildings, built from dark stone and reinforced with formation lines that ran across its walls. Several pillars stood around its entrance, each carved with dense inscriptions that glowed faintly beneath the morning light. Disciples moved in and out through the doors, but none lingered there without reason.
Inside, the sound of the city became distant.
Inside the main formation hall, at the heart of the formation responsible for controlling the city’s defenses and surveillance, everything was quiet except for the low hum beneath the floor.
Three cultivators with deep, steady auras sat around a circular formation nexus. Spiritual energy flowed quietly through the formation beneath them, passing through the inscriptions and filling the hall with a faint, continuous hum. They remained seated in silence, their breathing slow and steady as they continued cultivating while keeping watch over the formation.
Spiritual energy moved through the inscriptions carved into the stone, flowing outward from the nexus and into the walls of the hall. The three cultivators remained seated in silence, their attention divided between their cultivation and the formation. Every so often, one of them opened his eyes to examine the formation before him, making a small adjustment to a jade piece set along its edge before returning to his cultivation.
The oldest of the three was outer-sect Elder Han Rui.
His partly white hair was pulled back neatly, with a few loose strands resting beside his temples. His complexion was slightly weathered, and the lines around his eyes suggested years spent in cultivation rather than age alone. His eyes were calm and steady, carrying the quiet authority of someone accustomed to making decisions without needing to raise his voice. There was nothing harsh about his expression, yet his presence naturally drew attention whenever he looked up.
He wore the dark-blue robes of an Azure Cloud Sect elder, with the sect emblem embroidered neatly across his left chest.
To Elder Han Rui’s left sat Elder Luo Cheng. He had a broader build than the other two, with short black hair and a square face that gave him a more direct appearance. His eyes were firm, and even while sitting in silence, there was a faint sharpness to his expression, as though he was more inclined to question things than simply accept them.
Across the formation sat Elder Gu Yan. He was leaner, with long dark hair tied loosely behind his back and a slightly paler complexion. His features were calmer than Elder Luo Cheng’s, and his eyes carried a quiet attentiveness that made him seem more observant than outspoken. He rarely moved without reason, often watching the formation for several breaths before making any adjustment.
Both were at the Mid Foundation Establishment realm.
Elder Han Rui was at the Late Foundation Establishment realm.
Their positions here were not without reason. The defensive formation beneath the outpost drew upon their cultivation to maintain its strongest state, tying the three of them to the formation hall. The other two could keep it functioning if one withdrew, but the formation would lose some of its strength. For as long as they remained at the border, leaving was not a simple matter.
The three elders could not simply leave their positions. The formation was only part of the reason. Their presence itself carried weight along the frontier.
The Crimson Purge Sect was watching the outpost just as closely as Azure Cloud watched the border. Every movement of importance could change what the other side was willing to risk. If one of the elders suddenly left, it would not go unnoticed. The loss of one Foundation Establishment cultivator from a position this important could be seen as a weakening of the outpost, and a weakness on one side could become an opportunity for the other.
That was why the three elders remained where they were. Even if one of them had to leave, another cultivator of sufficient strength would have to take his place before the position was left exposed. The frontier had settled into an uneasy balance, with both sides keeping watch over the other and neither willing to create an opening that could be mistaken for an invitation.
Hurried footsteps approached from outside the hall before stopping at the entrance. A moment later, one of the disciples stationed outside spoke through the closed doors.
"Elders, an urgent message has arrived from headquarters."
Han Rui opened his eyes.
"Let him in."
The doors opened at once, and a young Late Qi Refining disciple hurried inside. He stopped several paces from the formation nexus and bowed deeply.
"Elders."
Han Rui gave the disciple a brief nod, his expression calm as his gaze remained on him. The gesture was enough to acknowledge his greeting and signal that he could continue.
The disciple lowered his head slightly.
"A spirit raven just arrived from the sect headquarters."
The disciple lowered his head and presented the sealed scroll with both hands. Han Rui accepted it, and the disciple bowed once more before turning toward the door. By the time the door closed behind him, Elder Han Rui had already turned his attention to the scroll. He broke the seal and unfolded it.
Han Rui’s eyes moved steadily across the message. He read it in silence, his expression remaining unchanged until a slight crease formed between his brows. Elder Luo Cheng noticed the change and turned his attention toward him.
"Senior Brother?"
Han Rui lowered the scroll.
"The sect leader has sent word about two matters."
Gu Yan looked up from the formation.
"Is it concerning the situation here?"
"No, at least not entirely it"
"The first concerns Lunar Echo Sect."
Elder Han Rui placed the scroll on his knee.
"The pressure along the border has increased. The sect has decided to strengthen its coordination with Lunar Echo Sect. We have been instructed to arrange for a disciple to be sent as an envoy to meet with them and discuss cooperation between the two sects."
Elder Luo Cheng’s expression hardened.
"That’s understandable. Crimson Purge has been getting increasingly bold along the border. Their disciples have been moving into our territory, attacking our people and causing trouble as though our authority means nothing. The same has been happening on Lunar Echo’s side. If this continues without either sect responding together, their actions will only become more frequent, and sooner or later, something much larger could come of it."
Han Rui nodded.
"They want someone who can speak for the sect and meet with Lunar Echo directly. The disciple will discuss the situation with them and work out how the two sects can cooperate."
Elder Gu Yan looked toward the sealed scroll.
"And the second matter?"
