Urban God of Rebate: Infinite Returns Of Women And Powers
Chapter 319: Girlfriend Meeting
Vanessa was at her building at eight.
She came out with one bag and the professional composure fully assembled and then she got in the car and saw Makima and Olivia and the composure did the thing it did.
Not fell apart. Just became something more honest underneath.
"Vanessa," said Olivia immediately. "I’m Olivia. He’s told me basically nothing about you which I respect because he tells me basically nothing about anyone but I read the Sarah Coleman piece about the Vertex situation and you were in it once as the CFO and I just wanted to say your quote about trust not being transferable was excellent."
Vanessa looked at her.
"Thank you," she said.
"Was that weird," said Olivia. "That might have been weird."
"It wasn’t weird," said Vanessa.
"Okay good." A pause. "Makima made food for the first night. You should know that going in because it raises expectations for all subsequent meals significantly."
Vanessa looked at the three bags. Then at Makima. "What are you making."
"Sit down," said Makima. "I’ll tell you on the way."
Vanessa sat down.
James pulled away from the curb.
Sean looked at the city moving past his window.
He thought about the specific thing that was happening in the car behind him. Three women who knew him differently and who had never been in the same room talking to each other for the first time.
His phone buzzed.
The system.
[Connection Resonance — Three Maximum Bonds in Proximity]
[Passive Generation Rate: CALCULATING]
Then, thirty seconds later:
[Passive Generation Rate: $19,200/hour]
[This rate will remain active while all three bonds are within proximity range]
[Note: This configuration has not previously occurred. Rate may adjust as the system calibrates.]
Sean looked at the number.
$19,200 every hour.
For four days.
He did the math. Ninety-six hours if all three were consistently close. $19,200 multiplied by ninety-six.
$1,843,200.
Just from proximity. Just from being in the same house.
He put his phone away.
He looked at the city thinning at the edges as James moved them toward the highway and the valley district and four days that had no justice operation in them and no investigation and no hostile acquirer and nothing to fix.
Just this.
—-------
The estate house looked better than the photographs.
Old stone, the specific gray of buildings that had been in one place long enough to have stopped being architecture and started being landscape. A gravel drive. A kitchen visible through the main window that had the lived-in quality he’d identified in the listing photograph.
Makima walked in first, which was going to be Makima regardless of property, and went directly to the kitchen and opened the range and examined it with the specific attention of a professional assessment.
"Good," she said, to no one in particular.
Olivia walked in and looked at the sitting room and the high ceiling and the view through the back window that showed hills going away in the particular way valleys showed hills, the specific depth of a landscape that understood its own proportions.
"Oh," she said. The simple version. The one that meant she’d been surprised by something being better than she’d expected.
Vanessa walked through the ground floor with the composed precision she brought to spaces, noting the light sources, the sightlines, the way the rooms connected. She stopped in the sitting room doorway.
"Whoever built this understood proportion," she said.
"Seventeenth century foundation," said Sean. "Renovated twice."
"You read about the house," said Vanessa.
"I read about things," said Sean.
"That’s on brand," said Olivia, from the back window.
Vanessa looked at Olivia.
Olivia looked back.
Something passed between them that was the specific acknowledgment of two people who had just identified that they had at least one thing in common. Sean noted it and said nothing.
—---------
Makima cooked that evening.
The kitchen handled it without complaint, the proper range doing exactly what it was supposed to do, and the three bags produced the specific meal that Makima produced when she had a kitchen that deserved it and time that permitted the full version.
Sean bought wine before they’d left the city. He paid for everything.
[680 dollars spent — wine and supplies for the first evening]
[Balance: $68,770,507]
[6,800 dollars received — 10x Makima bond active]
[New Balance: $68,777,307]
They ate at the large kitchen table because the dining room was formal in a way that none of them wanted the evening to be.
The conversation found its own pace.
Olivia asked Vanessa questions with the specific directness she brought to things she was actually curious about rather than politely curious about. Vanessa answered them with the precise honesty she brought to everything once she’d decided the room was worth it.
"Paris," said Olivia. "What’s it actually like. Not the fashion version. The actual city."
"The actual city is quieter than people expect," said Vanessa. "People who haven’t been think Paris is performative. The city performing being Paris. But the real version is very domestic. Very specific. The kind of specific that belongs to something that has been exactly what it is for a very long time."
"Like this house," said Olivia.
Vanessa looked at her. "Yes. Like this house."
Makima passed something across the table without being asked for it and Vanessa took it with the ease of someone who had been at tables like this before, which was the specific ease of someone who hadn’t but who absorbed the rhythm of spaces quickly.
"Sean told me about the showcase," said Makima to Olivia. "The film. The cinema with forty seats."
Olivia looked at Sean.
"He told you about that," she said.
"He tells me things," said Makima simply.
"What else did he tell you," said Olivia.
"Several things," said Makima. "None of which I’m going to repeat in front of him."
"You said that earlier," said Olivia. "About what he said about me."
"It applies consistently," said Makima.
Olivia looked at Vanessa. "Does he tell you things."
"Some things," said Vanessa. "He’s selective about what and to whom."
