Chapter 69: What the Drive Home Actually Held
Mia was awake when they finally pulled up outside the apartment, sitting on the front steps in the same spot she'd claimed months ago waiting for news about a hearing, and the sight of her — safe, ordinary, exactly where she'd promised to be — hit Cole harder than he expected after everything the last three days had put him through. She stood the moment the van door slid open, scanning each face in turn, counting heads the way she'd apparently been doing every hour since they left.
She took one look at Elena, thin and exhausted, leaning against Dana's shoulder, and didn't ask a single question before helping get her inside.
"Couch or bed?" Mia asked, already pulling blankets from the hall closet.
"Couch," Elena said, voice rough. "I haven't seen a proper window in four years. I'd like to fall asleep somewhere I can actually watch the sky change, if that's alright."
"Whatever you need." Mia arranged the blankets with the same brisk efficiency she brought to everything, and paused only once, studying Elena's face carefully. "You look like Dana. Same eyes."
"Everyone says that. I used to hate it, growing up. Wanted to be my own person, not just her sister's echo." Elena managed a tired, genuine smile. "Funny how four years changes what you actually miss about a comparison like that."
Mia set a glass of water on the coffee table within easy reach, hovered a moment longer than strictly necessary, and finally retreated to let the sisters have the room, catching Cole's eye on her way past with a look that said everything her mouth hadn't gotten around to yet — relief, exhaustion, and something close to pride in a house that had somehow, against every reasonable expectation, actually pulled this off.
The caretaker — Aldric, he'd finally told them on the drive back, a real name he hadn't spoken aloud in decades — sat awkwardly at the kitchen table, clearly unused to rooms that weren't designed around maintaining a lie.
"I don't know what happens to me now," he admitted, when Cole finally sat across from him. "Forty-one years of one job. I don't actually know how to be anything else."
"We'll figure it out. You held up your end. We'll hold up ours." Cole studied him a long moment, feeling the shape of his Conviction settle into something he recognized now, considerably better than he had in that tunnel. "You're the Fifth. Whatever that number's actually supposed to mean, you're not alone carrying it anymore."
The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
"That's a strange kind of comfort, coming from the Third."
"I contain multitudes. We've established the whole numbering thing's mostly just the Choir's paperwork anyway. Doesn't have to define what happens to any of us next."
Aldric didn't have an immediate answer for that, but something in his posture eased slightly, the first real relaxation Cole had seen from him since the tunnel.
Vesper found Cole on the fire escape near midnight, the whole house finally quiet, Elena asleep on the couch with the television playing low static she hadn't bothered turning off, apparently finding comfort in ordinary background noise after four years without any.
"We need to talk about what Aldric said," Vesper said, sitting beside him, notebook conspicuously absent for once. "About me. Being there. Forty-one years ago."
"You don't have to talk about it tonight."
"I know. I want to, though. Sitting with it alone hasn't made it feel any smaller." She pulled her knees up, wrapping her arms around them, staring out at the city lights. "If I was really there, at the center of whatever happened, and I've been reincarnated into the same face decades later — that's not a normal missing-memory situation, Cole. That's something considerably stranger than anything either of us has actually said out loud yet."
"I know."
"Does it scare you? Genuinely?"
Cole considered the question honestly, feeling the mark beneath his collar sit quiet, patient, offering no easy answer the way it never did for questions this large.
"A little," he admitted. "Not because of what it might mean about you. Because of what it might mean about me, and how long some things have apparently been circling back around to this exact spot without either of us choosing it consciously." He looked over at her, steady despite the uncertainty. "But scared isn't the same as unwilling. Whatever we actually find out, eventually, I'm not going anywhere in the meantime."
"You keep saying things like that."
"Because they keep being true. New hobby. I hear it's catching on."
She managed a real laugh, small and tired, and let her head rest against his shoulder the way she had a hundred times now, each time a little more natural than the last.
"Thank you," she said quietly, "for not needing this to make sense yet. For just letting it be strange for a while, instead of rushing me toward an answer."
"That's the whole method lately. Understand first. Everything else waits its turn."
Elena's voice drifted faintly through the open window below them, murmuring something to Dana in the living room — not words Cole could make out clearly, just the low, steady rhythm of two sisters finally, after four years, having an ordinary conversation about nothing that mattered and everything that did.
"She's going to need real time," Vesper said. "Not just physical recovery. Whatever four years as a battery actually did to her."
"We'll give her that. However long it takes." Cole watched the city lights a while longer, feeling the accumulated weight of the last three days settle into something he could actually carry instead of just survive. "Feels like the whole point of everything we've built here, honestly. Not winning every fight clean. Just making sure there's somewhere soft to land after the ones that cost something."
Vesper didn't answer that directly. Just reached over, found his hand in the dark, and held on, the city humming ordinary and indifferent below them, entirely unaware of how much had actually changed in the quiet apartment above it tonight.
