Cassian stared at his Champion, his mind momentarily freezing.

’She wants to sleep with me?’

For several long seconds, he simply looked down at Nyxara, trying to parse the exact meaning behind her sudden declaration.

Did she mean she simply wanted to go to sleep? That would be understandable. He was completely exhausted, after all, and the revelation from his mother had left his mind drained.

However, neither of them was tired in the ordinary sense.

And considering her current posture, he strongly doubted she was suggesting they share a cozy nap.

’No. Surely not...’

Cassian looked at her again. Her flushed face, the way her arms were wrapped tightly around his waist, and the sheer panic dancing in her violet eyes left very little room for misinterpretation.

He understood perfectly well what she meant.

What he couldn’t understand was why.

Cassian was intimately familiar with the mechanics of summon loyalty, it was one of the fundamental rules governing the Lord’s Domain.

Regardless of their original background, a summoned entity remained completely, unalterably loyal to the Lord who called them.

Betrayal was practically impossible unless the underlying laws governing their existence were somehow shattered.

That loyalty, however, did not automatically translate into romantic affection.

At least, that was what Cassian had always believed.

There was also another peculiar, unspoken pattern among Lords, though nobody had ever officially codified it into law: most Lords seemed to summon Champions of the opposite sex.

Some attributed this phenomenon to the Law of Counterbalance, believing that intrinsic differences between a Lord and their Champion naturally strengthened their soul bond.

Others argued it was simply a matter of personal subconscious preference.

Of course, neither theory had ever been conclusively proven, there were plenty of Lords who summoned Champions of the same sex, after all.

Cassian even remembered a rather sensational news report from his previous life about a female Lord who had engaged in intimate relationships with several of her female Champions.

It had caused quite a stir in the media at the time.

The Lord’s System had never prohibited such relationships. A Lord could ultimately do as they pleased with their own summons, provided they didn’t violate core system constraints.

Cassian had never paid much attention to the subject back then. In his previous life, he had summoned female Champions as well, yet none had ever expressed a desire to sleep with him.

Then again, his previous high-tier troop had consisted entirely of direwolves.

Cassian silently killed that train of thought before it could go any further. He was not interested in pursuing that line of memory.

Returning his attention to the present moment, he looked down at Nyxara.

’So why is she different?’

Was it something unique to her underlying soul? A byproduct of her rebirth as an undead shadow Champion? Or had the [Graveheart Sap] somehow altered her emotional architecture?

He simply lacked enough data to reach a definitive conclusion.

Unfortunately, his opportunity for quiet speculation vanished when Nyxara tightened her embrace around his torso.

Cassian’s body stiffened slightly.

The shadow elf had apparently decided that her accidental confession had already decimated whatever dignity she possessed, so there was little point in retreating now.

She pressed herself closer against him, resting her head firmly against his chest once more. Her pale face was thoroughly flushed, her eyes shut tight as though she were gathering the courage to endure whatever blunt rejection he might deliver.

Then, she slowly lifted her head.

Her violet eyes opened.

For a brief, flickering moment, she looked deeply uncertain. But when Cassian still hadn’t pushed her away or yelled at her, something shifted within her expression.

’I’ve already embarrassed myself to the point of no return. I might as well go all the way.’

Nyxara had never considered herself particularly skilled in matters of the heart. Facing down horde armies was one thing; exposing feelings she barely understood was an entirely different trial.

Yet she had already crossed that line. She wasn’t going to run away like a coward now.

Cassian stared down into her eyes.

He had spent the last several hours spiraling over the terrifying implications of his mother’s connection to the Endless Blackness.

He had panicked over his family becoming cosmic targets, calculated a hundred worst-case scenarios, and nearly collapsed under the psychological weight of an entity beyond mortal comprehension.

He had barely begun to pull his thoughts back together.

And now, his first Champion was boldly attempting to seduce him.

’What an utterly absurd situation.’

A faint, incredulous smile threatened to break across his lips. Of all the bizarre developments he had expected to navigate today, this had certainly not been on the agenda.

Yet, perhaps that was precisely why he found himself hesitating.

For once, there was no immediate enemy to cut down, no territory boundary to defend, and no system prompt demanding his attention.

The future remained uncertain, and the looming threats hadn’t magically disappeared, he could easily choose to keep obsessing over them.

He could push Nyxara away right now, stepping back into the endless cycle of tactical calculations, resource management, and ruthless preparations that had consumed his mind since his regression.

Or he could accept that he was allowed to have a single moment that wasn’t defined by the constant, suffocating need to survive.

’I’ve done enough overthinking for one day.’

Cassian exhaled a slow, heavy breath.

Lowering his gaze to Nyxara, he took her in. She was watching him with wide, expectant eyes, her slender fingers tightly clutching the fabric of his shirt.

Despite her sudden boldness, he could feel the fine tremor running through her body, she was waiting for him to decide what happened next.

For all her newfound courage, she was still his Champion. And he would never mistake her absolute loyalty for a mandatory obligation to satisfy his desires.

"Nyxara."

Her long, pointed ears twitched instantly. "Yes, my Lord?"

Cassian studied her flushed face for a quiet moment. "Are you absolutely certain this is what you want?"

Her expression softened slightly. The embarrassment remained written across her features, but her gaze didn’t waver for a second.

"Yes."

The answer was quiet, yet utterly devoid of hesitation.

Cassian held her gaze. Then, slowly, he raised a hand and gently brushed a stray lock of silver hair away from her face. His fingers lingered briefly against her cheek, feeling the soft warmth radiating across her pale skin.

Nyxara’s breath caught in her throat.

She had imagined a dozen different outcomes since recognizing these feelings within herself.

In some, he rejected her outright. In others, he sternly reminded her of the professional boundaries separating a Lord and a Champion. She had even mentally prepared herself for the possibility that he might simply laugh at the absurdity of it all.

She had not prepared herself for the deep tenderness in his blue eyes.

Cassian leaned down.

The height difference forced him to angle his head slightly, while Nyxara instinctively rose onto her toes to meet him halfway. Her hands tightened against his chest as the remaining distance between their faces dissolved into nothing.

She had fought in countless blood-soaked battles, wielded her Authority against terrifying monsters, and stood fearlessly before entities that could have torn her soul apart.

Yet none of those trials had prepared her for the sheer, overwhelming sensation of Cassian kissing her.

Her eyes widened in brief disbelief before slowly closing.

Then, guided by pure instinct, she returned the kiss.

Cassian’s hand settled against her soft cheek while his other arm wrapped around her waist, drawing her flush against him. What had started as a tentative, questioning touch gradually transformed into a quiet, warm acknowledgment of the feelings neither of them had dared to address out loud.

For once, Cassian stopped calculating the future.

He stopped trying to force every cosmic uncertainty into a manageable box.

He simply held Nyxara close.

And in the quiet sanctuary of his bedroom, with the Champion he had summoned standing willingly in his arms, Cassian allowed himself to let go of the weight of the world, if only for a little while.
