Chapter 160: Chapter 105: A Mole? Jiang Mu’s Desperate Counterattack

"Master Jiang, the Lord Chief requests your presence immediately. There’s an urgent assignment."

The confidant’s expression was normal, his tone steady.

Jiang Mu nodded. "Alright. Let me change my clothes."

After changing into a clean Demon-slaying Bureau uniform, Jiang Mu followed the confidant to the Bureau headquarters.

The moment he stepped through the Bureau’s main gate, he keenly sensed that something was off with the atmosphere.

While it was always solemn, today it was permeated by a tense, murderous aura.

He arrived at the grand assembly hall.

’Damn,’ he thought. ’Quite the scene.’

Aside from Director Ran Qingshan and Vice Director Tian Wenjing seated in the positions of honor, every single Hall Master from the various halls was present. Not one was missing.

The moment Jiang Mu stepped over the threshold, all eyes in the room snapped to him in unison.

Tian Wenjing’s gaze was complicated, a mix of scrutiny and doubt.

Wen He’s eyes burned with a feverish glee that was practically spilling out.

Yan Fenghuo and Xu Fu, who were usually on good terms with Jiang Mu, looked worried and confused.

As for the other Hall Masters, some watched on with cold indifference, some harbored hidden resentment, and others were simply filled with schadenfreude, eager to watch a good show.

But Ran Qingshan, seated in the place of honor, simply kept his head down, staring at the teacup in his hands, his expression unreadable.

Jiang Mu’s expression remained neutral as he stepped forward and bowed with clasped hands.

"I am Jiang Mu. Greetings, Director Ran, Vice Director Tian."

His gaze swept over his colleagues filling the hall, a look of confusion on his face. "Why have all the Hall Masters been summoned today? Has there been a major demon attack that requires our combined strength to handle?"

"Master Jiang."

Wen He spoke slowly, staring at him with a sinister gaze. "Have you ever heard a certain phrase?"

"What phrase?"

Jiang Mu looked at him in confusion.

A cold sneer tugged at the corner of Wen He’s mouth as he enunciated each word clearly:

"The nets of Heaven are vast, but they let nothing slip through!"

Jiang Mu froze, his confusion deepening. "What do you mean by that, Master Wen? I’m afraid I’m a bit slow. Please, speak plainly."

"What do I mean?"

Wen He scoffed, looking at Jiang Mu as if he were a lamb for the slaughter.

"Your acting skills are quite impressive, Master Jiang. You’ve had everyone completely fooled. So tell us. How did you collude with the Mist Demon, leak our intelligence, and get so many of our brothers killed?"

"What?!"

Jiang Mu’s eyes went wide, his face a mask of shock and disbelief. "Master Wen, what are you talking about? I don’t understand a word you’re saying."

The hall fell silent.

Xu Fu made to speak, but a sharp glare from Ran Qingshan silenced him.

"So you’re going to deny it until the bitter end!"

Wen He snorted, no longer bothering to beat around the bush.

He took out the Sound Stone.

A moment later, Jiang Mu’s voice emanated from the Sound Stone:

"Darling, listen to me. You have to leave Hu State first thing tomorrow morning... The City Defense Array is about to fail. A Great Demon will break in at any moment... I don’t want to see you die..."

The moment he heard this, the color instantly drained from Jiang Mu’s face.

He stared at Wen He in disbelief, lips trembling as he pointed at the Sound Stone. "Master Wen, this... this..."

Seeing his panicked and flustered expression, the others in the hall reacted in various ways.

’It’s over.’

’Looks like there’s no doubt about it. Jiang Mu is the mole.’

Watching the terrified and helpless Jiang Mu, Wen He felt an unprecedented wave of glee wash over him, sweeping away all the pent-up frustration he had endured for days.

He slammed his hand on the table beside him and roared:

"Jiang Mu, the evidence is conclusive and irrefutable! What more do you have to say for yourself?!

Are you going to try and deny that the voice on this Sound Stone is yours?

Or that the woman isn’t Madam Shen?!"

Jiang Mu pressed, "Master Wen, I just want to know one thing: where did you get that Sound Stone?"

Wen He sneered.

"Never mind where I got it. The fact that you’ve colluded with a Demon Fiend is settled. You’d better confess and tell us who your accomplices in Hu State are. Otherwise... don’t blame us for using harsher methods."

Jiang Mu glanced around the room. "Do you all believe I’m a mole, colluding with Demon Fiends?"

No one answered.

But their silence was an answer in itself.

Several highly skilled guards had already taken up positions at the doorway.

Tian Wenjing’s voice sounded old and weary. "Master Jiang, at least give us an explanation. What is all this?"

"An explanation?"

Suddenly, Jiang Mu slapped his thigh, his face a picture of utter grief and indignation.

"Elder Tian, all of you... oh, how can you all be so blind!"

He pointed at Wen He and shouted:

"Master Wen, you’ve been duped! You’ve been played for a fool!"

Wen He froze. "What?"

Jiang Mu bowed with clasped hands toward Ran Qingshan and Tian Wenjing, then pulled a Sound Stone from his robes and announced loudly:

"Everyone, what a coincidence!

I just so happen to have obtained a similar piece of evidence myself. Perhaps you should all have a listen."

With that, he activated the Sound Stone.

A moment later, to everyone’s shock, Wen He’s voice came from the stone:

"Master, rest assured, I, Wen He, swear my undying loyalty to Lord Mist Demon! It was my failure to deliver the intelligence in time that led to Lord Mist Demon’s retreat last time. Please, give this subordinate a chance to redeem myself!"

"???"

Everyone stared at each other, utterly stunned.

’What was going on?’

’Another mole? And it’s Master Wen?’

’Are the two moles trying to take each other down?’

The triumphant smile on Wen He’s face froze. His eyes bulged as he pointed a trembling finger at the Sound Stone in Jiang Mu’s hand, his lips quivering.

"You... you..."

His mind went completely blank, unable to process what was happening.

’How could this be?’

Just then, a guard hurried in, bowed with clasped hands, and announced:

"Lord Chief, someone just found a Sound Stone on the street. They said it contains... important intelligence."

Hearing this, everyone froze. A sense of utter absurdity washed over them.

Ran Qingshan said calmly, "Bring it here."

"Yes, sir!"

The guard presented the Sound Stone.
