Chapter 422: Chapter 422 The Truth Comes Out

“Don’t touch me.”

Rose’s voice was cold.

Trevor reached for her, but she stepped out of his grasp before his hand could reach her.

His jaw tightened.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Julia was quicker to recover.

She pasted a pleasant smile onto her face and stepped onto the stage, turning toward the guests and cameras.

“I’m sorry, everyone. Rose is probably just overwhelmed. She wanted to come out and greet everyone before the ceremony.”

A few guests exchanged uncertain looks.

Julia walked toward Rose, keeping her smile in place for the cameras.

But when she reached her, her voice dropped.

“Rose, if you’re upset about something, we can talk about it privately.”

Her smile never slipped.

“Please don’t do this in front of everyone. Think about Trevor, too. He hasn’t done anything to deserve this. He saved your life once.”

Rose let out a quiet, humourless laugh.

There it was again.

The same story.

The same debt they expected her to keep paying forever.

She turned toward Julia.

“Here we go again.”

Julia’s smile faltered.

Rose’s expression remained calm.

“I’ve heard that excuse enough times. Whatever debt you think I owe Trevor, I’ve already paid it.”

She stepped past Julia.

“And I’m done pretending otherwise.”

Rose walked farther into the ballroom.

Her white dress stood out against the dark suits and evening gowns surrounding her, making it impossible for anyone to look anywhere else.

The cameras followed her.

So did every pair of eyes in the room.

Then, for just a second, Rose’s gaze caught on a familiar pair of dark eyes across the ballroom.

Ryan.

Her jaw tightened.

She looked away.

She had no time to think about him now.

She stopped in the centre of the room.

The ballroom fell almost completely silent.

Rose looked at the guests, then at the cameras pointed directly at her.

“I’m sure most of you came here expecting to watch a wedding.”

Her voice carried clearly through the room.

“So let me make this simple.”

She took a breath.

“I am not marrying into the Robinson family.”

A murmur swept through the crowd.

Rose didn’t flinch.

“The only reason I’m standing here today is because I wanted to make one thing official.”

Her eyes hardened.

“I’m done with the Robinson family. Whatever relationship we had ends here.”

The room erupted.

Reporters immediately pushed forward, cameras flashing as questions flew from every direction.

“Rose!”

“Is the wedding cancelled?”

“Are you accusing the Robinson family of something?”

“What happened between you and Trevor?”

Julia’s face had gone pale.

She knew.

Rose knew everything.

The pleasant expression disappeared from Julia’s face, replaced by something much colder.

But Rose kept speaking.

“And there’s something else everyone here deserves to know.”

The noise slowly died down.

“The Robinson family has been negotiating with the Knight family over my daughter.”

A collective gasp went through the room.

Rose’s voice remained steady.

“They made those arrangements without my consent and tried to use Ariel’s custody as leverage.”

Her eyes swept across the ballroom.

“My daughter is not a bargaining chip.”

The words landed heavily.

“They don’t get to make a deal over her life simply because it benefits their families.”

Rose lifted her chin.

“If the Robinson family tries to transfer custody of my daughter without my consent or outside the proper legal process, I’ll take the matter to court.”

She paused.

“I won’t be intimidated into staying quiet. And I won’t let anyone take my daughter from me.”

The ballroom exploded.

Guests began whispering among themselves.

Several reporters immediately started shouting questions.

“What kind of deal?”

“Are you saying the Knight family wants custody?”

“Is this about Ryan Knight?”

“Did the Robinson family actually make an agreement?”

The Robinson family’s carefully polished image was beginning to crack right in front of everyone.

Julia’s face tightened.

“Rose!”

She stepped forward.

“How could you say something like that?”

She had never imagined Rose would expose everything here.

Not at the wedding.

Not in front of the press.

Once the story was public, it couldn’t simply be buried behind closed doors.

And public scrutiny was something even powerful families couldn’t completely control.

Before Julia could reach Rose, Trevor caught her arm.

“Trevor!”

Julia glared at him.

“Go talk to Rose. Don’t let this ruin everything. Today is supposed to be a celebration.”

But Trevor didn’t move.

He didn’t even look at his mother.

His eyes remained fixed on Rose.

His expression was unreadable.

Rose looked around the ballroom.

An hour ago, this room had been filled with champagne, flowers, soft music, and people congratulating her.

Now it felt like a courtroom.

Good.

Let them see.

“The Robinson family kept me in the dark while making plans involving my daughter,” Rose said.

“They used Ariel’s custody to pressure me into going through with this wedding and expected me to smile for the cameras while they did it.”

Her voice hardened.

“I won’t do that.”

She looked directly at Julia.

“I won’t let my daughter be treated like a bargaining chip. And I’m not going to stand here and pretend any of this is acceptable just to protect the Robinson family’s reputation.”

Oliver shot to his feet.

“Wait. They actually did that?”

His disbelief was genuine.

Charlotte stared at the Robinson family, then slowly crossed her arms.

She hadn’t known the Robinsons particularly well beyond business.

But this?

This was another level.

“Seriously?” she said.

“You’re using a child to get something from another family?”

She gave a short, incredulous laugh.

“That’s your idea of a family deal?”

Her expression was openly contemptuous.

The Robinson family members nearby looked furious.

Julia’s face had turned rigid.

Across the room, Grace and Dr. Nathan Hale sat in the VIP section.

Neither had expected to hear any of this.

Grace’s expression was icy.

Dr. Nathan’s face was equally grim.

They had known Rose had been unhappy at the Robinson estate.

They hadn’t realized how far the family had gone.

Grace exchanged a look with Nathan.

Both of them were clearly furious, but neither spoke.

Not yet.

Then Derick lost his patience.

Victoria grabbed his arm, trying to stop him.

“Derick—”

He pulled free.

“What the hell does the Robinson family think they’re doing?”

His voice thundered across the ballroom.

“That’s my granddaughter you’re talking about!”

Every head turned toward him.

Derick pointed toward the Robinson family.

“Do you really think you can treat her like this and the Taylor family will just sit back and watch?”

The room went silent again.

Rose’s daughter was not simply some distant connection.

She was part of the Taylor family.

And suddenly, the Robinson family’s dispute with Rose had become a much bigger problem.

Alicia stood frozen.

She had finally put the pieces together.

Ariel really was Ryan’s daughter.

Ryan hadn’t come here merely to save face or watch his ex-wife get married.

He had come because Rose—and Ariel—were at the centre of this.

Alicia’s hands tightened at her sides.

Her eyes drifted toward Ryan.

He was still sitting where he’d been all morning.

Long legs crossed.

Expression unreadable.

Almost like he was simply another guest watching the chaos unfold.

But everyone in the room was now waiting for one thing.

Ryan’s reaction.

An older guest finally broke the silence.

“Ryan, is what Rose said true?”

The question hung in the air.

Every conversation stopped.

Ryan slowly lifted his gaze.

His eyes found Rose.

She stood alone in the centre of the ballroom, surrounded by cameras, reporters, and furious members of the Robinson family.

Her hands were clenched at her sides.

She had nowhere left to retreat.

And yet she hadn’t backed down.

She was drawing a line.

Not only between herself and the Robinson family, but between herself and Trevor.

Ryan looked at her for several long seconds.

Then he closed the lighter in his hand.

The metallic click was surprisingly loud in the silence.

He stood.

His tall frame immediately drew everyone’s attention.

“My daughter isn’t something the Robinson family gets to decide the fate of.”

His voice was calm.

But every word carried.

Rose’s eyes lifted.

For the first time that day, something inside her shifted.

Julia’s expression changed instantly.

There was no mistaking Ryan’s position.

He had just publicly sided with Rose.

And, more importantly, with Ariel.

Julia forced herself to remain composed.

“This is being blown completely out of proportion.”

She turned toward the guests.

“The Robinson family has no intention of breaking any agreement. There has clearly been a misunderstanding, and we’ll handle everything privately.”

She smiled tightly.

“There’s no reason for anyone to speculate.”

Rose almost laughed.

A misunderstanding?

Only now?

After everything had already been exposed?

She had known this was how they would respond.

Deny it.

Call it a misunderstanding.

Try to move the conversation somewhere private where they could control the damage.

That was exactly why she’d chosen to do this here.

She needed witnesses.

She needed the press.

And she needed both families to understand that any attempt to take Ariel behind closed doors would now attract public and legal scrutiny.

If they still wanted to make their move, they’d have to think twice.

Julia opened her mouth again.

But a voice suddenly came from the entrance.

“Misunderstanding?”

Everyone turned.

“Then maybe you should explain the recording.”

Rose froze.

Diana stumbled through the doorway.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was falling out of its messy bun, her clothes were the same ones she’d been wearing the day before, and one cheek was marked with a faint red handprint.

She was breathing hard.

In one hand, she clutched a small voice recorder.

The ballroom fell silent.

Rose stared at her.

“Diana?”

Diana looked like she’d barely made it there.

She had been trying to avoid someone—or perhaps everyone—from the Robinson family.

But somehow, she’d escaped.

She hadn’t even bothered to change clothes.

She’d simply run.

Diana pushed through the crowd and hurried toward the stage.

“The Robinson family doesn’t get to call this a misunderstanding.”

Her voice shook with exhaustion.

“But they can listen to what they actually said.”

She climbed onto the stage and stopped beside Rose.

Rose’s eyes immediately fell on the mark on Diana’s cheek.

Her expression changed.

The exhaustion and shock disappeared.

Cold fury replaced them.

“What happened to your face?”

Diana shook her head.

“Later.”

She raised the recorder.

“Listen first.”

Then she pressed the button.

A recording filled the ballroom.

The voices were unmistakable.

The Knight family’s demands.

The Robinson family’s response.

The discussion about Ariel.

The agreement to help the Knight family gain custody.

And the decision to keep Rose out of it entirely.

Every word.

Every detail.

Crystal clear.

The room went dead silent.

No one could call it a rumor now.

No one could dismiss it as gossip.

They had heard the Robinson family make the deal themselves.

“Diana!”

Two people in the audience suddenly shot to their feet.

Her parents.

Their faces were filled with shock and disbelief as they stared at their daughter standing beside Rose.

The wedding had officially turned into a scandal no one in the room would ever forget.
