Chapter 415: Chapter 415 The Truth She Had Kept Hidden

Rose’s back went rigid as she met Ryan’s eyes.

His face was usually unreadable, cold enough to make people keep their distance. But now, something unfamiliar flickered in the depths of his eyes.

She couldn’t put a name to it.

It was complicated. Conflicted.

And somehow, one look was enough to make her chest ache.

“I’ve said everything I needed to say. If you want to play games, that’s up to you.”

Rose didn’t respond to his earlier words.

"You gave me a daughter."

Ryan gave a quiet, humorless laugh. “You’re really that guarded around me?”

Rose’s nerves tightened.

She knew Ryan too well. She knew how he operated, how quickly he could turn a situation to his advantage. She wasn’t about to underestimate him.

“Isn’t that what I learned from your family?” she asked. “Everyone puts on a nice face while hiding what they’re really thinking. I had to learn how to protect myself.”

“What if I insist on taking my daughter back?”

Ryan’s voice dropped.

Rose’s hands curled into fists.

“Then let me make something very clear. You don’t have the right, and you don’t have the opportunity.”

She paused, then gave him a cold smile.

“And congratulations, by the way. Back when you were so in love with Samantha, I had you sign away your parental rights.”

Ryan’s expression changed.

His eyes immediately turned cold.

“What are you talking about?”

For perhaps the first time in years, Rose felt something close to relief.

She smiled.

“Did you forget?”

Her voice remained calm, but there was a sharp satisfaction underneath it.

“You were always so careful with paperwork. You’d normally read every clause before signing anything. You could’ve caught it yourself if you’d actually bothered to look.”

She looked directly at him.

“But that day, Owen called you and told you something had happened to Samantha. You were in such a hurry to get to her that you didn’t even bother reading what I put in front of you.”

Rose’s smile faded.

“You signed a custody waiver, Ryan.”

She let the words sink in.

“You voluntarily gave up your parental rights. No one forced you.”

Silence filled the car.

Rose had carried those words inside her for years.

She had swallowed the anger, the humiliation, the heartbreak—all of it—until she’d almost stopped feeling anything at all.

But saying it now felt like finally opening a wound that had been sealed shut for too long.

For once, the pain had somewhere to go.

The silence inside the car became suffocating.

Ryan’s lips pressed into a thin line.

The color slowly drained from his face.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

It was as if he needed time to understand what she’d just told him—and, more importantly, what it meant.

When he finally spoke, his voice was low and heavy.

“Rose... you really planned to leave me for good, didn’t you?”

“You made your choice years ago.”

Her resolve didn’t waver.

Rose turned her face away, swallowing the bitterness rising in her throat.

“I’m only telling you the facts. You may have power, money, and influence, but you signed that agreement yourself. If you want to fight me for custody now, it won’t be nearly as simple as you think.”

She looked back at him.

“And Ryan, from this point on, I’m not afraid of you. I’m not afraid of the Knight family, either.”

Her voice was steady.

“If it comes down to it, I’ll fight all of you.”

Rose opened the car door.

She stepped out without another word.

Then she walked away.

She didn’t look back.

Inside the car, Ryan remained completely still.

He didn’t call after her.

He didn’t get out.

But his eyes followed her until she disappeared from view.

Minutes passed.

A dull, pounding headache spread through his head.

Ryan closed his eyes and leaned back against the seat, tilting his head against the headrest.

His breathing was slow and controlled, but his expression betrayed the turmoil underneath.

His eyelashes trembled faintly.

His Adam’s apple moved as he swallowed.

No one knew what was going through his mind.

*****

Rose went straight to Dr. Nathan’s house.

Ariel had gotten out of school early that afternoon and was playing in the backyard.

The moment Rose saw her daughter’s small figure, something inside her cracked.

Her throat tightened.

Tears filled her eyes before she could stop them.

She hurried over, crouched down, and pulled Ariel into her arms.

She buried her face against her daughter’s shoulder.

She didn’t dare make a sound.

She simply held Ariel and cried as quietly as she could.

“Mom?”

Ariel’s face immediately changed.

Normally, she would’ve run into Rose’s arms with a huge smile. But this time, she felt the slight trembling in her mother’s shoulders.

She pulled back enough to look at her.

“Mom, did somebody hurt you?”

Rose couldn’t answer right away.

After a moment, she quickly wiped her cheeks and forced a smile.

“No, sweetheart. I just missed you.”

Ariel wasn’t fooled.

She was old enough to know when her mother was lying.

She reached up and gently wiped the tears from the corners of Rose’s eyes.

“But you were crying.”

Her little face crumpled with worry.

“I don’t want you to cry, Mom.”

Rose stared at her daughter.

For several seconds, she couldn’t bring herself to speak.

Then she took a slow breath.

“Sweetheart... I want to ask you something.”

Ariel nodded.

Rose hesitated.

“And this is just a what-if, okay?”

“Okay.”

“If your biological father were still alive... would you want to meet him?”

Ariel blinked.

Rose forced herself to continue.

“Would you ever want to know him? To have a dad in your life?”

She had hidden the truth from Ariel for years.

She’d convinced herself that keeping it hidden was protecting her daughter.

But things were different now.

The Knight family knew.

Once they came looking for Ariel, the truth would eventually come out.

Rose didn’t want Ariel to hear it from someone else.

She wanted her daughter to hear it from her.

Ariel stared at her mother for a long moment.

Then her expression softened.

“Mom, don’t be scared.”

Rose froze.

“No matter what happens, I’m on your side.”

Ariel reached for her hand.

“Even if my dad comes looking for me, I won’t leave with him.”

Rose’s eyes immediately filled with tears again.

Ariel was young, but she wasn’t naive.

She’d figured out what Rose was really asking almost instantly.

Rose pulled her close and hugged her tightly.

She closed her eyes.

For a brief moment, she allowed herself to simply hold her daughter.

Then—

Her phone rang.

Rose stiffened.

She pulled it from her pocket and looked at the screen.

Her heart sank.

It was the Knight family.

They’d come for her sooner than she’d expected.

Rose took a slow breath.

She motioned for Ariel to go inside.

“Go on, sweetheart. I’ll be there in a minute.”

Ariel hesitated, clearly worried.

But she eventually nodded and went inside.

Rose answered the call.

Edward’s furious voice came through immediately.

“Rose, how dare you deceive the Knight family? You secretly took a Knight child and let another family raise her!”

Rose’s expression didn’t change.

She’d expected this.

“Mr. Knight, if you have something to say, get to the point.”

“You need to come back to the Knight family home immediately.”

His tone was commanding.

“You’re going to explain yourself.”

Rose lowered her eyes.

A cold smile touched her lips.

“Have you forgotten something?”

She paused.

“I haven’t been part of the Knight family for a long time.”

Her voice became sharper.

“I’m not that young woman who used to stand in front of you and quietly accept whatever you said.”

Edward’s face wasn’t visible, but Rose could practically feel his anger through the phone.

“And as for the child...”

Rose’s smile disappeared.

“Your family doesn’t have the right to demand anything from her.”

She ended the call.

No argument.

No explanation.

No room for negotiation.

Rose slipped her phone back into her pocket and took a deep breath before heading inside.

******

At the Knight family home, Edward’s expression was grim.

He had never expected Rose to speak to him that way.

Not anymore.

What had truly shaken the family, however, was the revelation that there was a child carrying Knight blood whom they had known nothing about.

A child Ryan had never known existed.

A child Rose had secretly allowed the Robinson family to raise.

To the Knight family, it was more than shocking.

It was humiliating.

Margaret gritted her teeth, disbelief written all over her face.

“That woman really had the nerve to pull something like this.”

She could hardly believe it.

“She took a child from the Knight family and hid her from us all these years?”

That child carried the Knight family’s blood.

For years, everyone had been waiting for Ryan to have a child.

And now they were finding out he’d had one all along.

If the incident at NYU hadn’t brought everything into the open, they might never have known.

The thought alone infuriated Margaret.

Just then, a servant hurried into the room.

“Mr. Knight is home.”

Everyone turned toward the entrance.

Ryan walked in slowly, one hand gripping his suit jacket.

His face was calm.

Almost expressionless.

But there was something different about him.

Something darker.

As he walked toward them, his usually composed features gave nothing away.

Edward studied his grandson carefully.

“Ryan.”

Ryan stopped.

He looked at the people waiting for him.
