Chapter 255: Chapter 255: the hope he couldn’t let go of II
Vivienne woke earlier than usual.
For a moment, she simply lay beneath the covers, her eyes open as the quiet of the morning settled around her.
A smile slowly appeared on her lips.
Saturday.
She stretched lazily beneath the sheets.
Then she thought of Christopher.
As usual.
Vivienne reached for her phone and looked at the time.
She knew he would have a busy day ahead.
Sports Fest preparations had already begun, and Christopher had told her that the Student Council would be occupied throughout the weekend.
Vivienne’s fingers hovered over the keypad.
What should she say?
She thought for a moment.
Something encouraging.
Something warm.
Something that would make him smile when he saw it.
She began typing.
Good morning, Christopher. I hope you have a productive day today. Don’t forget to have a good breakfast before everything gets busy.
She read it again.
Not bad.
Thoughtful.
Simple.
She smiled and pressed send.
Then she placed the phone beside her.
Vivienne settled back against her pillow.
For a few more minutes, she allowed herself to enjoy the quiet.
Then she glanced at the clock.
She sat upright.
Right.
Volunteer work.
She had to get ready.
As she began thinking about the day’s work, another thought followed.
Damian.
Vivienne paused.
Oh.
She was going to see Damian today.
A smile returned to her face.
She hadn’t seen him in almost two weeks.
And suddenly, getting ready seemed a little more interesting.
--
Vivienne got out of bed.
She moved toward her wardrobe, already thinking about what she needed to bring.
The Foundation had reminded them to come prepared for a full day in the field. Comfortable shoes. Her project folder. Notebook. Pens.
She gathered everything she needed.
Then she opened her wardrobe.
She paused.
There was nothing particularly difficult about choosing an outfit for volunteer work.
Something practical.
Something comfortable.
Something appropriate.
She reached for one of her usual outfits.
Then stopped.
Her eyes moved to another.
Vivienne pulled it out.
She looked at it.
It was still perfectly appropriate.
Just a little more flattering.
She held it against herself in front of the mirror.
Then smiled.
Why not?
She changed.
Then stood in front of the mirror again.
Her hair could look better.
She picked up the curling iron.
Just a little.
Nothing excessive.
She curled the ends, then brushed them lightly until they fell naturally around her shoulders.
Makeup came next.
Very little.
A light touch here.
Another there.
Barely noticeable.
Exactly the way she wanted it.
When she finished, Vivienne looked at herself in the mirror.
She tilted her head.
Pretty.
Good.
She adjusted one strand of hair.
Then another.
A small smile appeared.
She knew exactly what she was doing.
She wanted to look good.
And she knew who was going to see her.
Damian.
Damian has always been attentive to her even before she learned that he liked her.
She never noticed that it was especially spefic to her, but thinking of it now, he never did those things he did for her to other girls.
Anyway, after the pool party, after realizing just how much he liked her, Vivienne had become even more conscious of it.
She liked the attention.
She liked knowing that he noticed her.
She liked the little changes in his expression whenever she smiled at him or leaned closer.
And she liked teasing him.
There was something satisfying about knowing she could make Damian flustered with very little effort.
She didn’t want anything serious from him.
Not yet.
She wasn’t even sure what she wanted.
But she enjoyed this.
That was the truth.
Vivienne picked up her bag.
She glanced at the clock.
Her eyes widened.
She had spent far too long getting ready.
"Oh, no."
She hurried out.
--
By the time Vivienne reached University Town, she was walking faster than usual.
Claire and Amelia had already gone ahead.
Eleanor had left separately for the logistics group.
They had different responsibilities and schedules so they didn’t travel together.
Vivienne didn’t mind.
She had enough on her mind.
The Foundation work came first.
They had already done the planning.
Now they needed to see how the East Junction pilot actually worked on the ground.
There would be businesses to coordinate with.
Supplies to check.
Arrangements to confirm.
People to speak with.
She mentally went through the list.
Then her thoughts drifted again.
Damian.
She smiled.
It really had been almost two weeks.
She wondered whether he would look happy to see her.
She hoped he would.
Perhaps he would immediately ask how her examinations had gone.
Perhaps he’d make some teasing remark.
Perhaps he’d simply give her that familiar smile.
Vivienne’s steps quickened.
She checked the time.
8:58.
Perfect.
She wasn’t late.
Barely.
The Foundation building came into view.
Vivienne straightened her bag and smoothed her hair once.
Then she walked inside.
--
The consultation room was already occupied.
Mrs. Lee stood at the front with several folders spread across the table.
Peter and Oliver were already seated.
Damian was there too.
Vivienne paused briefly when she saw him.
A smile appeared on her lips.
Damian looked up.
Their eyes met.
For a moment, neither said anything.
Vivienne simply smiled at him.
Damian gave her a small nod.
She didn’t think much of it.
They were about to begin the briefing, after all.
Vivienne took the remaining seat.
Shortly as she was seated, Jessica and Sophia arrived.
A moment later, Mrs. Lee began.
--
"All right, everyone. Now that we’re here, let’s go over today’s arrangements."
Vivienne opened her folder.
Damian did the same.
Mrs. Lee looked toward the two of them.
"Since East Junction is the first pilot to move into implementation, we’ll begin there today."
Mrs. Lee then went over the arrangements for the East Junction pilot.
Since the project was moving into implementation, there was no longer a need to revisit Vivienne’s plan. Their focus now was making sure the system functioned properly once real businesses, real schedules, and actual surplus were involved.
Damian was tasked with confirming the arrangements with the participating businesses.
He would verify their contact information, closing times, collection schedules, and the locations where their surplus was being stored.
Vivienne and Damian would also need to ensure that everything collected was properly documented—the quantity, type of product, source, and time of collection.
Mrs. Lee reminded them not to rely entirely on the businesses’ earlier estimates. The amount of surplus available could have changed considerably in the weeks since those estimates were made.
The collection route and truck schedule would also need to be practical. If there was a delay at one location, they would need to understand how it affected the rest of the route.
And any problems had to be recorded.
Even the small ones.
The purpose of the pilot was to uncover weaknesses in the system before the Foundation attempted to expand it.
Sophia, Jessica, Peter, and Oliver would continue developing their own projects while observing East Junction where appropriate. What Damian and Vivienne learned during the pilot would give the others something concrete to work with when their own projects eventually moved into implementation.
Damian and Vivienne were expected to observe the entire collection and consolidation process—from the moment a business released its surplus to the moment it reached the Foundation.
The meeting continued with questions about transportation, documentation, emergency procedures, and discrepancies between estimated and actual contributions.
Damian asked about the truck’s expected arrival window.
Vivienne asked how discrepancies between a business’s estimate and its actual contribution should be recorded.
Mrs. Lee answered both questions before moving on to the remaining arrangements.
.
Finally, Mrs. Lee closed the last folder.
"All right. That’s everything for now."
She looked around the room.
"Meeting adjourned. Let’s all get to our assignments."
Everyone began gathering their things.
Mrs. Lee left first, carrying her folders with her.
Sophia and Jessica followed shortly afterward.
Peter and Oliver were next.
Neither pair seemed particularly interested in lingering.
They had noticed things before.
The way Damian tended to pay attention to Vivienne.
The way Vivienne seemed particularly comfortable around him.
The little looks.
The casual familiarity.
They didn’t know what, if anything, was actually happening between the two.
But perhaps they didn’t need to know.
