Chapter 290

State of Frenzy

Going back a bit, after seeing that no one tried to understand her, Nara felt extremely angry. She pretended to be unwell and tried to help them but didn’t receive a single word of thanks. How could she be happy about that?

Nara buried her feelings of frustration deep inside, but they were triggered again when her classmate entered the tent. Since yesterday, this classmate had said many things. Seeing her now made Nara uneasy, and then she struck a nerve with her words again.

“Duchess Ellie is loved by everyone because she doesn’t meddle with anyone, doesn’t cause problems, and is very calm. Even with you, who constantly causes trouble for her, she doesn’t hold grudges. That’s why everyone loves her even more. If she weren’t Eldest Young Lord Setter’s beloved, the young nobles would probably support her as empress over Duchess Vida.”

Her friend’s words were meant to show Nara how likable Ellie was, hoping Nara would soften her stance and open up to Duchess Ellie. But she thought too little. Because she understood that Nara and the duchess probably didn’t get along because of some past issues, thinking that whatever misunderstanding or conflict between them could be resolved through open conversation. Hence, Nara wouldn’t keep causing troubles, better yet, she might even get support from the Setter family.

If she were Nara, she would approach Duchess Ellie nicely, leveraging their past relationship to rise in status instead of wallowing in difficulty.

However, she didn’t know that there was no real enmity between Nara and Ellie. Nara simply couldn’t accept the truth that Ellie had a better life now. It was Nara’s unresolved jealousy that caused all her problems!

When her patience reached its limit, and being stimulated violently by jealousy, Nara’s good spirit was utterly destroyed. Darkness slowly took over, deeper and deeper...

If Nara had received the Mystic Fox, the demonic toxin in her body would have been dealt with. That rare level 4 magical beast was sent to change Nara’s life completely. But it was taken away by the “young man” whom the creator had specially sent for the heroine. If it had been someone else...the creator might be able to do something about it. Unfortunately, this man was also an exception to the rules. Now, the creator’s love for their hero might have turned into hatred.

Because the magical beast meant to reset the storyline had been destroyed, and the secret plan of the rainbow egg, which was supposed to upgrade Nara’s beast, had been stolen, the demonic toxin in her body became a ticking time bomb that was now set to explode...

“Ellie!! It’s you. It’s all your fault! If you had just died...No! If these idiots weren’t so blind, they would see how beautiful I am, how good I am. So, they all...yes, they all deserve to disappear!!”

“Ah!!! The pain. It’s unbearable. Disappear, disappear!!” Nara screamed inside the tent. Her actions shocked her classmate, who saw Nara’s body trembling with a dark aura emanating around her. The classmate didn’t know what to do and simply shouted that Nara was unwell.

Unaware that these were symptoms of someone who had been poisoned by demonic toxin, the classmate assumed Nara’s delirium was due to a fever. It could also be considered her luck as this thought of seeking help saved her life. Otherwise...

When everyone heard the screams and saw the two professors rush in, they were greatly alarmed. Professor Medik spoke briefly with Professor Lucien before turning to face the students. The students sensed that this was no ordinary situation, especially since the usually composed Professor Lucien looked so worried.

“Announce a state of emergency. Evacuate all the villagers and get them as far away from this area as possible. I hope no one interferes with this fight.”

“F-Fight?”

“Professor, what’s happening? Why is there a fight when Nara is just sick?”

“Professor, can you please explain more about what’s going on?” Medik bit his lip and shouted. He couldn’t keep the students in the dark any longer; they needed to know what they were facing.

“Student Nara was poisoned with demonic toxin nearly 1 year ago. It seems she can no longer resist it.” As Professor Medik’s voice faded, the students were left gaping. Though they sensed Professor Lucien’s concern, they hadn’t imagined the threat they faced wasn’t a powerful or intimidating beast but something far more terrifying.

“Demonic toxin!!”

“Damn it!! We’re dealing with demonic toxin?”

“Argh!! No, I can’t stay here any longer. I’m the heir to my family. If something happens to me, my family will suffer greatly.”

“Me too. I’m leaving. I don’t care about this mission anymore. This is the institute’s fault. How dare they hide this? I don’t want to work with someone carrying a poison bomb inside them!!”

“I knew Nara was strange. With a heart so dark, it’s no wonder the toxin was easily triggered.”

“But the professors are at fault too. Why let Nara join the mission with us? Shouldn’t those poisoned have ended their own lives? How could they let her cause trouble like this!?”

Most of the students were extremely frightened by the situation, but more than anything, they already hated Nara. Instead of feeling pity for the girl who was a victim of the demonic toxin, they cursed her instead.

“Stop panicking. This is an emergency situation. Evacuate everyone from here immediately.” Professor Medik frowned, his beautiful face was serious, prompting the students to disperse and complete their tasks. The professors were right; this was a true emergency. If they delayed, it would only burden the professors further. Despite their hatred for Nara, letting the professors deal with Nara, who had the demonic toxin within her body, while worrying about everyone else was not the right course of action.

The students quickly spread out to perform their duties. Only Ellie seemed unconcerned about the situation. Wint, who had rushed in to protect her, was slightly puzzled. Right now, it was a life-threatening situation, but didn’t the little girl have any intention of letting go of the cauldron?

If something went wrong and chaos erupted like before, what if Nara accidentally got close and get stabbed by Ellie’s nails at the last moment, wouldn’t Ellie end up as the new vessel for the demonic toxin? Nara had contracted the toxin by stepping on a beast, hadn’t she?

The once-clear sky turned dark. Although it was evening, the sky shouldn’t have darkened so suddenly. Ellie felt a strange chill, sensing this might be Heaven’s wrath.

Boom!!

Nara burst out of the tent, shredded fabric scattering everywhere. It turned out that when the heroine, who was once the user of light elemental magic, was poisoned by demonic toxin, the power of the toxin amplified. Her Mary Sue-like powers from the beginning of the story caused a whirlwind to rage in all directions. However, Ellie felt no fear of the demonic force before her.

Professor Medik was not a character endowed with divine powers like the heroine’s friend, Ellie. Wint and Professor Lucien, however, were different. Both were “heroes” chosen for their divine favor, often called Heaven’s favorites. They would surely be unharmed.

And so it was...

“Ah!! I’ll kill you, Ellie!! It’s because of you. You ruined everything!!” Nara’s scream echoed through the forest, terrifying the students. The power of demonic beasts was scary enough, but a human triggered by demonic toxin was far more terrifying. They could even feel the pressure.

Villagers screamed, and some fainted from fear. The sky had gone wild, with rain and wind so fierce that they could barely stand. Professor Lucien, however, ignored the chaotic weather. His golden magic power shot upward, dispersing the clouds. Though they tried to regroup, they failed.

The young professor, the Sage hero, frowned in displeasure. He felt something abnormal trying to interfere with his thoughts, but Lucien wasn’t easily controlled.

He disrupted the storm clouds until they finally gave in and dissipated, replaced by heavy rain. Nara, crying like a madwoman, lunged at the people in front of her. Strangely, she feigned an attack on Professor Lucien before suddenly turning to assault Professor Medik who was behind.

Professor Medik immediately summoned the plant power from his bond to protect himself, but the deadly poison significantly affected the bonded plant. Just like how Ellie had to be careful not to let her little Apple consume too much demonic toxin, even though botanic power could suppress demonic toxin, if the latter was stronger, it would overpower them instead.

For example, water could overpower fire, but if the fire was too intense, the water only fueled it...potentially causing explosive steam and more damage.

Professor Lucien didn’t let Medik fight alone. Though he had been momentarily distracted, it was not more than one second and he could quickly join Medik. Using his weapons and magic power, he restrained Nara tightly, trying to bring her back to her senses first. Unfortunately, Nara couldn’t regain her sanity.

Her mind was filled with anger, hatred, and deep-seated jealousy. Memories flooded her mind—images of Ellie, once a weak girl who lost both parents, a peer of same age whom Nara had always seen as a rival. Seeing Ellie beneath her made Nara happy. Every visit to Ellie’s house to feign comfort was followed by Nara’s delight laughter after she returned home.

The food Ellie gratefully received was actually just Nara’s foot wash and the vegetables that were left by Ellie’s parents. Seeing Ellie eat and feel thankful boosted Nara’s ego.

However, Nara’s memories gradually shifted. Shouldn’t Ellie, who should have remained beneath her feet, continue living a life of a steppingstone forever? Why did she changed so much? The person who should be the center of friends, the one professors should notice, the one loyal men should pursue for her virtues, or villainous men who would treat her well, the influential men who would become the most superior of the kingdom—Nara didn’t know why...but she felt that the people around Ellie should have been hers!!

Tears flowed down Nara’s face, and eventually turning into blood...

“That!! Lucien! Step back. She’s entering a state of frenzy!” Medik’s heart trembled. When a demonic toxin user entered a state of frenzy, the consequences were more dire.

Unlike beasts that at most, just fight fearlessly with all their might when frenzied, a human poisoned with demonic toxin reaching frenzy means the toxin and their magic power have reached a peak. This might have been the original intent of the demonic toxin creator.

They knew that the easiest way to create a human killing machine was to find someone who could merge demonic toxin with magic power. This meant that the demonic toxin would have unlimited energy. As long as the demonic toxin was continuously replenished with magic power, it could generate new demonic toxin indefinitely.

In other words...if magic power contaminated with demonic toxin could harm someone and infiltrate their body, the result would be that...the magic power containing the demonic toxin would form within that person, turning them into a vessel for the demonic toxin.

This was the simplest way to spread the toxin. However, finding someone who could transform demonic toxin into demonic toxin magic wasn’t easy. For hundreds of years, this had only been information found in books. In the era before humans entered the tower, there was a record in a city inhabited by high-level races. This record documented the fall of a certain race, attributing it to someone in that race who could use magic power combined with demonic toxin—just like Nara now!!
