Chapter 142

Dealing with the Demon Girl

While many people were terrified, Ellie was completely indifferent to the dead body in front of her. This wasn’t her first time killing someone. Since coming to this cruel world, killing those who dared to harm her was no different from killing beasts. Therefore, the only thing that interested her was the quality of the Empress’s Thread.

It was unlike ordinary thread. The thread Ellie had used previously was given to her by Professor Lucien. Its price wasn’t exorbitant, but it wasn’t common market thread either. It was very sharp and flexible. However, Professor Lucien hadn’t used this technique initially; he kept it only because he hadn’t sold it yet. It was equipment he found in a city he had seized, which he eventually gave to Ellie. He had told her from the start that she would need to change her thread for real combat.

If it were the thread given by Professor Lucien, after dealing with 1 enemy, it would leave blood stains for a while. No wonder when she fought Professor Maxim, she saw the thread in the end. Luckily, there was only one enemy then. Otherwise, the blood flowing along the thread would have revealed her traps.

The Empress’s Thread was different. Its durability, sharpness, and other qualities were similar to the thread from Professor Lucien. However, when enemies fell into its trap, it wouldn’t be easily revealed. No matter how much blood splattered, it wouldn’t cling to her hunting equipment.

"The Empress’s Thread is really amazing," Ellie murmured to herself happily. Finally, Ellie’s identity had an additional weapon. Previously, she could only use her tracking ability to her advantage, lacking any real offensive power to conceal her decomposition ability.

With the teachings of the Sage, even though she wasn’t the heroine with light elemental powers, Professor Lucien’s analytical skills were outstanding. Now, Ellie could become one of the strongest hunters without even relying on magic.

"S-So, it was this damned brat who cut off my hand!!"

"Everyone, back off. This kid can fight!!"

"You’re dead. You killed someone here, you’re definitely dead!! The Setter family won’t let anyone who causes trouble and commits crimes escape!"

"Set City isn’t a place for you anymore, you demon girl!!"

By the time the thugs realized what was happening, 3 of them were injured, and 1 was dead with his neck severed. This made them all too afraid to approach Ellie again. Even Big Brother, who felt intense hatred towards Ellie, because he now knew that it was her who cut off his hand, didn’t dare come close.

"Surround this brat. Someone go inform the Setter family, quickly! Let’s see what reward we get for capturing a criminal. Haha," Big Brother laughed. It didn’t matter if they couldn’t handle her; as a murderer, she wouldn’t survive in Set City anyway.

Actually, if it weren’t for this kid using such strange fighting techniques...they would have stormed in and handled it themselves. Who would let the other party go free and wait for the Setter family to deal with it?

But Ellie’s combat technique was too complex for ordinary people to understand. Just getting close to the girl could easily get them killed. Would they dare to make a move again?

Ellie herself was in no hurry. Since these people wanted to inform the Setter family so badly, she would just wait for them to call the Setter family! She really wanted to see who the Setter family would choose to help between the troublemaking thugs...and herself!

It didn’t take long for the Setter family’s soldiers to arrive. However, it wasn’t the soldiers that the thugs had summoned; it was those who had received news from the Setter family’s spies, who were tasked with keeping a distant eye on Ellie for her safety on the orders of the family head. When they heard that Lady Ellie was being attacked in their city, they were terrified!

Without waiting for the news to reach the family head, the soldiers responsible for security quickly mobilized the entire battalion. Now, over 100 soldiers from the Setter family had arrived here.

This grand movement caught the attention of everyone in the city. The nobles who had come to Set City, hoping to negotiate benefits or curry favor with the Setter family, couldn’t help but come to witness the event.

"Haha, the Setter family’s soldiers are here! Everyone, make way for the soldiers quickly!" The thugs’ Big Brother still didn’t know his fate. They thought the soldiers were here because their subordinates had reported the news, unaware that those subordinates had already been arrested.

"Soldiers! Arrest this wretched girl immediately. She’s the one who took down our men. Look, our brother’s body is still lying there without justice. Sir, you must give our brother justice." The large man pointed to a body with its head in one place and the body in another, putting on a pitiful act.

"Sir, please, it’s not like that. This girl didn’t mean to." The middle-aged vendor, still sobbing uncontrollably, rushed forward as the thugs pointed at Ellie, trying to implicate her. She was almost begging the soldiers to believe her words. If Ellie hadn’t intervened, the girl wouldn’t have found herself in this unfortunate situation.

"Didn’t mean to!? Look at my hand. It’s this demon girl who did this. And there are others who are injured too. This girl is a danger to Set City. Please, punish her, sir."

"No, she didn’t do anything wrong. These thugs were the ones bullying us first. This girl is good."

"Bullying? You dare say that? Where are the dead!? Where are the injured? It’s only us who are dead and injured. It’s clear who the perpetrator is and who the victim is! Oh, are you in league with this demon girl too? Fine then, sir, take her away as well. I bet she helped in the killings too." Big Brother threw the middle-aged woman at the soldiers’ feet.

If approaching Ellie wouldn’t cause him problems, he might have dragged the girl and thrown her too.

"In Set City...it’s unbelievable that people like this exist, sir," Ellie, who had been listening the whole time, said nonchalantly. But her words made the 100 soldiers standing there tremble with fear.

Just a single statement from the girl could make the family head realize how poorly they had managed the city. Until now, it might not have been a problem, but if it turned out that their negligence caused Lady Ellie trouble while she was just strolling through the city, who do you think would be held responsible? Wouldn’t it be them?

"Ah, uh..." The soldiers’ leader tried to say something, but before he could form a sentence, the large man interrupted again.

"Be careful, sir. If you’re going to arrest this wretched girl, you have to be cautious. She has strange weapons. Just getting close to her can get you cut in half! If you’re going to arrest this wretched girl, it’s better to capture her dead," Big Brother warned the Setter family soldiers earnestly, trying to appear as a concerned citizen.

But the more he spoke, the darker the expressions of the soldiers in charge grew. With every "this wretched girl" and "demon girl" and "punish her," it became clearer that the one who deserved punishment was not the great Lady Ellie, but rather the person spouting such reckless words!!

"Shut up!" The squad leader couldn’t take it anymore. He raised his hand, stopping the vile thug leader from speaking further.

The large man paused but obediently fell silent, sensing the soldiers’ seriousness. While they could handle ordinary townsfolk, how could they oppose the real soldiers and fighters of the Setter family? They had no choice but to act politely and try to appease them.

While he was feeling smug, thinking there was no way the soldiers would easily let go of the girl who had dared to kill in front of so many witnesses, his eyes suddenly widened in shock before he could see the outcome he expected.

The actions of the soldiers were nothing like what he had expected!

"Lady Ellie, we apologize for handling this matter too slowly, causing you to take action yourself. We hope you won’t hold it against us."

The scene unfolding before everyone left them speechless. Where was...the severe and decisive punishment from the Setter family? Where was the stern declaration that they would not let the culprit go free? What was this then? What they saw was a soldier, the leader no less, approaching the supposed murderer with a respectful demeanor, almost bowing down to beg her forgiveness.

Was this...correct?

"A-Are you, are you misunderstanding the situation? It is us who were..."

"Shut up!!" The squad leader turned and shouted at the Big Brother, who recoiled, his neck almost shrinking into his chest. It was clear that the soldiers were here for the girl, not for these thugs!

The merchants, although shocked by the sudden turn of events, felt a sense of relief. Seeing that the girl was not punished was exactly what they wanted to see. The thugs’ actions today had been too cruel. Not only did they show no compassion for the vendor with responsibilities to bear, but they also intended to kill the girl just because she had said something they didn’t like. When they saw Ellie fight back, many villagers wanted to cheer out loud if not for the fear of the thugs’ retaliation.

"Do you still dare to speak like this? Do you think we are too foolish to see who did what? You say so much, trying to manipulate us into punishing Lady Ellie? Don’t be so foolish. What you should be doing now is kneeling and begging Lady Ellie not to punish you severely!"

"If you keep speaking nonsense, there’s no need to wait for a judge. I will cut off your head right here for daring to speak so disrespectfully about Lady Ellie!!"

Faced with such a fierce response from the soldier, the thugs glanced at each other in confusion! Not only were the soldiers reprimanding them despite seeing one of their own lying dead, but they were also telling them to kneel and beg for mercy from this girl.

"Y-You call this demon girl..."

"How dare you!"

"N-No, no, forgive me. I meant this girl...you call her “Lady Ellie”?" Despite being despicable and stupid, they weren’t deaf or blind.

Seeing the soldiers of the Setter family so openly protecting this small, stunted girl, how could they not realize that she was not just an ordinary girl as they had thought?

The Setter family soldiers showed her the utmost respect, calling her "Lady" wasn’t enough; they even threatened to punish them by the Setter family’s laws if they continued to call her a demon girl, before the matter even reached the judge representing the palace. This implied that even if the matter reached the judge’s ears, they would still face the death penalty.

What on earth was happening here?!!

When the soldiers heard the thug leader’s question, a scornful smile appeared on their faces. Just seeing this smile sent chills down the thugs’ spines. It seemed like they were about to hear something far more terrifying than approaching the girl and dying in confusion!

But before the squad leader could say anything, suddenly, the surrounding noise grew louder, accompanied by the arrival of a new group that made their hearts drop to their feet!

"L-Lord of the Setter family!!!"
