Chapter 592: Chapter 592: The Fight Between Two Elders

(Chapter Eight)

Ling Ruonan made the call to Luo Xusheng from the privacy of her own bedroom.

As she dialed the number she knew by heart, she was very nervous, her slender fingers trembling uncontrollably.

She was also filled with anticipation, longing to hear the voice she hadn’t heard in many years as soon as the call was connected.

But to her great disappointment, the call went unanswered.

However, she could understand since Luo Xusheng’s situation was special; he wasn’t always available to take calls.

Thus, she sent two messages and did not plan to wait any longer.

Unexpectedly, just as she finished texting, the phone rang back. She hurriedly pressed the answer button.

The initial awkwardness, the not knowing what to say, weighed heavily on her heart and made her feel very sad.

She felt that many things had faded or disappeared in the silence and separation, such as emotions and sentiments.

But to her surprise, that man who had always been reticent, actually initiated conversation.

His stammering while speaking filled Ling Ruonan with joy; she sensed his nervousness and his care for her as he spoke.

When Luo Ziling’s situation was mentioned, she could feel Luo Xusheng’s shock and anger.

She understood that despite the distance between them, that man had always been keeping an eye on her and her son, even caring more for their son’s safety than she did. He also cared for her, deeply and truly. Moved by this, tears naturally streamed down her face as she spoke.

After discussing Luo Ziling, she shared her own worries and said that she and her son had prepared for the worst, asking Luo Xusheng to do the same.

Ling Ruonan was taken aback once more when the man on the line began to laugh proudly: “This kid has guts; I like that.”

Hearing Luo Xusheng’s words, Ling Ruonan almost wanted to berate him furiously. What time was it, and in such circumstances, he still knew to be so vain?

Fortunately, Luo Xusheng’s subsequent reactions satisfied Ling Ruonan.

Luo Xusheng said he would arrange for a few more people to go to Yanjing to ensure their safety.

He himself would also try to make a trip to Yanjing to personally deal with the situation.

If the Ling or Yang families, or someone else wanted to harm them, they would have to step over his dead body first.

Luo Xusheng’s response pleased Ling Ruonan quite a bit.

However, after discussing these matters, they both lapsed into silence again, not knowing what else to say.

In the end, Luo Xusheng said weakly, “Nannan, it’s all my fault. I’ve caused you and our son to suffer. I will make up for all the hardships you’ve endured over the past twenty years. I will repay it twofold. For the rest of my life, I will be at your service.”

Ling Ruonan’s pent-up grievances and sorrow burst forth due to Luo Xusheng’s tremulous words; she began crying uncontrollably over the phone. Her crying scared Luo Xusheng half to death, prompting him to quickly comfort her.

Eventually, it was Ling Ruonan who hung up the phone first. She knew if she continued talking to Luo Xusheng, she wouldn’t be able to control her emotions.

After throwing away her phone, Ling Ruonan could no longer control her emotions, burying her head in the bedclothes and crying her eyes out.

Fortunately, the bedroom was well soundproofed, and since she muffled her sobs with the bedclothes, no sound reached the outside.

After weeping bitterly for a while, Ling Ruonan washed her face in the bathroom and then laid back down on the bed for a bit.

Luo Xusheng had just suggested sending a few people over to protect Luo Ziling, and she hadn’t objected.

In fact, over the years, Luo Xusheng had sent quite a few people, and most of the guards around Ling Ruonan were appointed by him.

The guards around Ling Ruonan were mostly retired veterans from the “Snow Fox” special forces unit, along with some others trained by Luo Xusheng. Their skills and loyalty were impeccable.

Wuyue was someone Ling Ruonan had organized herself, and the other two female guards in her entourage were also her own recruits. Apart from these women, the male guards were all arranged by Luo Xusheng. Over the years, there had been numerous assassination attempts against Ling Ruonan, but because she was protected by these highly skilled and loyal guards, each attempt ended without harm.

Ling Ruonan wasn’t concerned about her own safety; she was worried about Luo Ziling’s safety, especially since he had faced more dangers recently.

So, upon hearing that Luo Xusheng would arrange for a few people to covertly protect Luo Ziling, she breathed a sigh of relief.

After resting a while and calming her emotions, Ling Ruonan rose to go back into the bathroom to fix her makeup.

Normally, Ling Ruonan didn’t bother with makeup, but after seeing her slightly swollen eyes, she applied a bit to conceal the redness. After checking her reflection and finding no telltale signs of her breakdown, she finally left the room.

Upon leaving her own room, she went to the door of Luo Ziling’s bedroom and gently asked, “Ling’er, are you sleeping?”

When she received no response from Luo Ziling, Ling Ruonan tiptoed downstairs and signaled Wuyue, who was already waiting, to head back to the old family house.

While Ling Ruonan was preparing to return to the old house, the place became lively again, this time stirred up by the slightly older generation.

Ling Mingqing and other elder members of the Ling Family had come to celebrate Ling Jinhua’s birthday.

Upon hearing that his son and grandson had been beaten up by Luo Ziling, Ling Mingqing was immediately incensed.

He didn’t go straight to Ling Jinhua but instead sought out Ling Mingrui to question him about the incident.

But to Ling Mingqing’s surprise, before he could open his mouth, Ling Mingrui spoke first, “Did your grandson intend to spoil father’s mood today deliberately? Today is father’s ninetieth birthday, a joyous occasion, and he dared to insult people publicly, instigating others to join in the cursing and brawling, with your son also adding to the chaos. They very well know that father is only in good spirits today because of that young man’s treatment. Furthermore, father still needs his ongoing treatment. Their actions not only sought to ruin father’s birthday mood but also put father’s recovery at risk. So tell me, who do you think is mainly at fault for today’s incident? Who doesn’t want father to regain his health?”

Ling Mingqing and Ling Mingrui had always been in conflict. Ling Mingqing believed that he was quite capable and if the father had allocated more resources to him, his achievements would not fall short compared to Ling Mingrui’s. Thus, Ling Mingqing harboured resentment, resulting in a strained relationship between the two brothers.

Today, Ling Mingqing intended to use the incident from earlier to confront Ling Mingrui.

If he played his cards right, he could tarnish Ling Mingrui’s reputation, perhaps even forcing him to relinquish his position as Family Head.

But unexpectedly, before he could lash out, Ling Mingrui confronted him first.

Ling Mingrui’s arguments were, of course, reasonable, and he spoke under the pretense of acting in Ling Jinhua’s interests, leaving Ling Mingqing no room to directly express his anger.

After giving it some thought, Ling Mingqing still coldly questioned Ling Mingrui, “That bastard beat up my son and grandson, and you just let him go like that? Are you using that bastard’s hands to deliberately bully our family?”

“Your son and grandson got beaten because they called my grandson a bastard. If that young man were here right now, I think you would’ve already been slapped. I must remind you, that is my daughter’s son, he has a father, he is my grandson, not some ‘bastard’.” Ling Mingrui said, his eyes revealing a chill, “Don’t use cursing my grandson as a cover to insult our whole family as well.”

Ling Mingqing hadn’t expected such a response from Ling Mingrui and was momentarily stunned.
